Tools of the Persuasion Trade
Tools of the persuasion trade I admit it. I have been a Fox News devotee for a long time. I have watched the channel ebb and flow over the years as some of its key personalities have bitten the dust and moved on (some by choice and some, involuntarily). One of those is Mr. Bill O'Reilly whose departure left perhaps THE biggest gaping hole in their lineup. Fortunately, it was filled by the courageous and often very humorous Tucker Carlson who is perhaps the most important man in the Fox stable of personalities. Over the years we've seen the departure of Ed Henry, Erik Bolling, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Bob Beckel, Shepard Smith and Megyn Kelly, to name but a few. Some have gone on to bigger and better things while others have simply faded into the media wallpaper. One person who has remained at Fox is Chris Wallace, host of the Sunday morning program of the same name. I was a fan of his father's interviewing style (the famous Mike Wallace) for many years. There was no doubt that Mike Wallace was a Democrat, but he was a fearless interviewer. His son's political stripe was not always so apparent. It has become so over the past four years as he has made no bones about his dislike of Donald Trump and his embrace of Democrat politics. His performance as moderator of the Trump/Biden debate of a few months ago, sealed it for me. There was no doubt left in my mind…Wallace had 'defected' to the other side as his moderatorship clearly showed. -

Here Is No Way for Ofcom to Know What Information It Should Request
Douglas H. Wigdor [email protected] May 22, 2017 VIA EMAIL AND FEDERAL EXPRESS Ms. Sharon White Chief Executive, Ofcom Riverside House 2a Southwark Bridge Road London SE1 9HA Re: Claims Against Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc., et al. Dear Ms. White: I write to follow up on my letters of May 3 and 8, 2017, as well as our meeting on May 11, 2017, to provide additional information that may be relevant to your review of Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc.’s (“21st Century Fox” or the “Company”) potential takeover of Sky plc. I. 21st Century Fox Has Refused To Release Our Clients From Confidentiality Agreements Following our meeting on May 11, 2017, our Firm wrote to counsel for 21st Century Fox regarding confidentiality clauses and policies applicable to certain 21st Century Fox employees, as well as the confidentiality clauses currently applicable to two of our clients. As to the latter, on May 17, 2017, we sent letters to counsel for 21st Century Fox and requested that the Company remove the confidential gag orders that would prevent certain individuals from speaking with Ofcom. On May 19, 2017, we received a response from 21st Century Fox. The response was a resounding “no.” Specifically, counsel for 21stDeadline.com Century Fox wrote: “I assume [ ] that your request does not arise from Ofcom, which I am confident understands that 21CF is committed to providing Ofcom with all information that Ofcom requires to conduct its review . [I]f Ofcom requires additional information, we are confident they will ask for it.” This response is disingenuous for various reasons. -
Playaway Preloaded Audiobooks Are the Best Way to Listen, Unplugged and Uninterrupted
Read by Bob Beckel and Graham Beckel rowing up poor in Lyme, Connecticut, with an abusive father, Bob Beckel learned to be a survivor: to avoid conflict, mask his feelings, and lie—all skills that would later G serve him well in Washington, D.C., and on the campaign trail. In college, Beckel found himself drawn to both drugs and politics, the dual gravitational tug of ’60s counterculture. He confronted bigotry while registering African-American voters under the new Voting Rights Act, found inspiration volunteering for Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign, and, in the devastating aftermath of the Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. assassinations, was among those tear-gassed by Chicago police at that year’s Democratic National Convention. After a stint in the Peace Corps in the Philippines, Beckel arrived back in the nation’s capital on his twenty-fourth birthday with the goal of reinventing himself. He quickly carved out a reputation as a savvy campaign consultant, spearheading dozens of successful congressional races. In 1977 he became the youngest-ever Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and went on to manage Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign, before launching a second career as a TV host and commentator. But Beckel was living a double life: Washington success story by day, self-destructing alcoholic by night. On January 20, 2001—George W. Bush’s first Inauguration Day—he hit rock bottom, waking up in a hospital psych ward after a ferocious bender. In the years that followed he struggled to recover from alcohol and cocaine addiction, debt and legal problems, public scandal and private pain—until a surprise phone call started him on a path that would transform his life. -

Wikileaks and the Battle Over the Soul of the Networked Fourth Estate
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLC\46-2\HLC209.txt unknown Seq: 1 6-JUN-11 13:54 A Free Irresponsible Press: Wikileaks and the Battle over the Soul of the Networked Fourth Estate Yochai Benkler* [I]t is very necessary that we should not flinch from seeing what is vile and debasing. There is filth on the floor, and it must be scraped up with the muck- rake; and there are times and places where this service is the most needed of all the services that can be performed. But the man who never does anything else, who never thinks or speaks or writes, save of his feats with the muck-rake, speedily becomes, not a help but one of the most potent forces for evil. There are in the body politic, economic and social, many and grave evils, and there is urgent necessity for the sternest war upon them. There should be relentless exposure of and attack upon every evil man, whether politician or business man, every evil practice, whether in politics, business, or social life. I hail as a benefactor every writer or speaker, every man who, on the platform or in a book, magazine, or newspaper, with merciless severity makes such attack, provided always that he in his turn remembers that the attack is of use only if it is absolutely truthful.1 Wikileaks was born a century after President Theodore Roosevelt deliv- ered the speech that gave muckraking journalism its name, and both hailed investigative journalism and called upon it to be undertaken responsibly. In 2010, four years after its first document release, Wikileaks became the center of an international storm surrounding the role of the individual in the networked public sphere. -

Afghanistan Before the Invasions: the Subversion of Democracy in 1973
Afghanistan before the Invasions: The Subversion of Democracy in 1973 Khalida Ramyar A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Sociology York University Toronto, Ontario May 2015 © Khalida Ramyar, 2015 Abstract Using the Wikileaks PlusD Archive of US State Department cables from Kabul in 1973, this thesis presents an analysis of the politics of the Helmand Water Treaty between Afghanistan and Iran and the role of the US in Afghanistan's politics at the time. The analysis of the cables shows: a) that US policy was directed towards the promotion of neoliberalism in Afghanistan; b) that Afghanistan in 1973 was the site of a largely neglected struggle for democracy, and c) that the US, as well as the Afghan establishment, worked together to suppress this democratic struggle. These broader political dynamics are illustrated through a focus on the Helmand Water Treaty as discussed in the cables. ii Dedication For my love Justin, without whom nothing is possible, and for Cyrus, my little Halfghan, for whom I hope this narrative fills some of the gaps in the road to self-discovery. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank: My supervisors, Tania Das Gupta, and Michael Nijhawan, for giving me a lot of freedom and flexibility, for believing in the story, and for being endlessly helpful. The Graduate Program Director of Sociology when I entered the program, Kathy Bischoping, for giving my application a chance. My family, and especially Mom and Dad, for providing the inspiration to find the truth. -
