Main period of Pre 1809; Main Tin, copper mining and elvan quarry industrial settlement 1809-41 industry: growth: Industrial history and significance Polgooth developed relatively early. Little survives from the early years of the mine in the 16th- 18th centuries when Polgooth was associated with some of the major county families and prominent engineers. This said, there is a good level of survival from the early nineteenth century in the form of workers cottages, the Inn, Count House and the intricate street patterns and leats developed in association with the mine. One of the most enduring legacies of the settlement’s industrial past, however, comes not from the mine but the quarry to the south of the settlement which provided the material for the majority of Polgooth’s buildings. Polgooth is a classic type of early industrial settlement, an uncoordinated scatter of smallholdings on the edge of common land divided between the two parishes of St Mewan and St Ewe (in fact three if the mine area outside the settlement within St Austell is included). Cottages were fitted in and amongst still-working or recently finished mines and processing sites, all set on the no-man’s land of waste, some distance from their respective churchtowns, in land shared by two or three large landowners, often in dispute over overall control of the area.

    PRESS RELEASE A sea of Santas will be sure to cause a storm in two Cornish towns this December as Cornwall Hospice Care launch their first ever Santa Fun Runs in Padstow on Saturday 4 th December and Falmouth on Saturday 11 th December. The charity is calling out to those Cornish folk up for some festive fun to get involved – men and women, boys and girls, young and old – everyone is welcome to join the Christmas fundraiser. Entrants can choose to run, jog or walk around the route with a choice of two distances at both locations. “Everyone is really excited about the Santa Runs, it is going to be a fabulously festive event with lots of fun and merriment – I’m sure the sight of hundreds of Santas running through the streets is going to cause quite a stir!" said Karen Holman, Events Team Leader for Cornwall Hospice Care. There will be festive music at the start, mince pies and a warm drink to greet the runners when they finish. Every entrant will receive a free Santa suit, with Santa hats for children, so there really will be a sea of Santas by the seaside - a sure way to get into the Christmas spirit and to help raise some vital funds for the charity which provides adult hospice care across Cornwall. Radio Cornwall is supporting the charity runs not only by entering teams of runners but also with two of their well loved presenters setting the jolly Santas on their way – James Churchfield at the Padstow event and Laurence Reed in Falmouth.
