Traditional vs. Roth 401(k) Q. What is the difference between a traditional 401(k) and a Roth 401(k)? The simple answer is whether you get a tax break now or later. Ooms and Sons Dairy Farm has replaced some of the need for human labor with a $1.5 million investment into robotic milking machines. Without the investment, the dairy farm in Kinderhook would have to hire at least two more Apeople. But the farm has struggled in the past to find dependable workers. Eric Ooms, a second generation farmer, said the investment into robotic milking was strategic to free him from depending on an uncertain labor market. With the robotic machines, the farm has been able to increase its milk production 10 to 15 percent since the farm switched two years ago. More dairy farmers in the state and nationwide are switching to robotic milking systems for the same reason — to increase their production while decreasing labor needs. Workforce shortages are not a new issue for farmers. Tat, along with short harvesting seasons and rising costs of production, has been making life difficult for farmers for generations. Farmers can’t find local workers who are willing to do the work, so they’ve increasingly turned to migrant labor. Renewed national attention surrounding immigration, though, has more farmers worried. Fruit and vegetable farmers are cutting back on their crops, including cabbage and sweet cherries. Other farms are being bought out or at risk of closing altogether.

“It seems to just be getting worse. Our farmers tell us they struggle to find an adequate workforce. A lot of times, local residents aren’t wanting to spend long hours and doing the hard work that it takes to grow crops and take care of the animals. Tey’re increasingly turning to migrant labor to get the crops planted, get the fruit and vegetables harvested and the cows milked.”

UNCERTAINTY AROUND THE H!2A PROGRAM Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont depends on the H-2A program for its workforce. Te farm employs 10 to 12 people per year from Jamaica on H-2A visas. Unlike a lot of other farms, their produce has not been affected by workforce shortages. H-2A visas are used specifically to fill temporary agricultural work. Tat differs from H-1B visas, which allow businesses to hire foreign workers that specialize in cer- tain industries like science, engineering and computer programming. It’s unclear if the H-2A program will change under Trump’s administration. He’s vowed to expel undocumented immigrants from the country and to decrease the num- ber of available visas. Dairy farmers specifically are not eligible for the H-2A visa program. Te visa program is for seasonal workers, and fruit and vege- table farmers rely on these visas. Tax Liability When Selling Your Home Q. Do I Have To Pay Capital Gains Tax? When you sell your home, you will need to consider the possibility that you might obligated to pay a “capital gains tax” on your profit. A. The amount of tax is based on the profit realized over and above the basis price. Capital gains (and losses) can be short term or long term. Short term (assets held less than 1 year) rates are typically higher than the long term rates. Now before you panic, there are exemptions for that you may qualify for which could exempt (or minimize) you from this tax liability. Homeowners may qualify for an exemption when selling their primary residence, if they meet the following criteria: • You owned the home for a total of at least two years in the five-year period before the sale. • You used the home as your primary residence for a total of at least two years in that same five- year period. • You haven't excluded the gain from another home sale in the two-year period before the sale. If you meet these conditions, you can exclude up to $250,000 of your gain if you're single, $500,000 Mark Lasch, CTFA if you're married filing jointly. 518.433.5834 | [email protected] Maybe one of the best things you can do as a homeowner is start of file which holds all your receipts for payments made that would increase the cost basis of your home. Things like a room addition, remodeled kitchen, central air or a new energy efficient furnace all may ADD to your cost Capital Bank welcomes Mark Lasch as basis thus minimizing your gain and reducing any tax liability you may have.
