Adams suggested that future historians would consider the heady post–World War II years to be “an age of invincible surmise.”2 He regarded the era with an optimistic eye. Professor Karla Goldman School of Social Work Building, Room 4704 [email protected], 734-763-6583 Office Hours by Appointment Jews at the University of Michigan: Exclusion and Inclusion in Higher Education Judaic Studies 441 / AmCult 405-012 / History 468-004 / SW 513-001 Tuesday, 2-5 PM, 2346 SEB, Winter 2020 Course Description: When most elite private colleges and universities in the Northeast imposed quotas during the 1920s on the percentage of Jewish students on campus, Michigan became an attractive destination for children of East Coast immigrant families, establishing a long tradition of a strong national Jewish student presence at the University. The University of Michigan has thus served as an important locus of Americanization and for the development of American Jewish culture. Despite the historic and contemporary significance of Jewish presence at and contributions to the University of Michigan, very little has been written about the Michigan Jewish experience. This seminar provides the opportunity to learn about and contribute to a developing narrative of Jewish experience at the University of Michigan. Class readings and discussions will focus on the history of Jews in American higher education, the history of the University, and the research and presentation tools necessary to gather and share the stories of Jews at the University. We will hope to find meaningful chronological and thematic overlap in the selection of topics for final research projects. Potential themes include radical student culture; fraternity/sorority life, Hillel, campus activism, faculty and student experience, the extent to which U-M replicated the exclusionary admissions practices of Eastern elite schools, exclusions and quotas in specific departments and professional schools, religious expression, constructions of Jewish identity at the University; acculturation and assimilation, examination of socio-economic of U-M Jewish students during the 1930s; anti- Semitism, Jewish philanthropy, and the evolution of Judaic Studies, among other subjects. -

We contribute them.” - Harry Stuhldreher, Wisconsin Badgers football coach, 1942 For most of us in Grant County the story of Dave Schreiner, small town Lancaster boy who went to college and became an All-American is old news: He was a two time first-team All-American end, Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in 1942, and the first Badger to catch three touchdown passes in the same quarter. The story of his eventual entry into the Marine Corps, and his death on June 21, 1945, the last day of the battle of Okinawa is also well known. In the Cunningham Museum are a considerable number of mementoes of his life, most having belonged to his mother. One of those is a program for the East-West Shrine All-Star Game, held in Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on January 1, 1943. Dave was among the greatest college football players of the 1942 season chosen to play in that game. It was the last college football game he ever played. The East won 13-12. The AP reported: “Going into the game as 10 – 7 favorites, the East started out with a flourish by grabbing a touchdown five minutes after the opening kickoff on a beautiful, looping, 34 yard pass from Paul Governali of Columbia to Dave Schreiner, Wisconsin’s All-American end.” When I looked inside the program I found to my surprise that the east All Stars had autographed their photos. -

Rebecca Zurier Toward »Loss of Logic«: Realism, Politics, and Pop Art in Two Early Exhibitions In fall 1963, when the idea of pop art was still under construction, the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) in Ann Arbor hosted two forward-thinking exhibi- tions that explored the new tendency. »Six Painters and the Object«, a show curated by the respected critic Lawrence Alloway, arrived on tour from the Guggenheim Museum with work by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and others already attracting atten- tion in New York. The more eclectic »New Realist Supplement«, curated in-house by the museum’s Associate Director Samuel Sachs II and Irving Kaufman, a Professor of Art, featured a wider range of media and artists, from the West Coast as well as the East.1 Quiet galleries were disrupted with 12-foot-wide Combine paintings (Fig. 1), sculpture that incorporated working radios, billboard imagery, scenes of rape and mur- der (Fig. 5), and Superman and a toilet-licking Superdog in Jail (Fig. 3). Record num- bers of people visited and a lively »what is art?« debate ensued. Students who saw the exhibitions now remember them for being on the cutting edge of a transformative era at the University. The early Sixties on campus saw the alliance of two recently named phenomena: »the military-industrial complex« and the Cold War »multiversity«. In an influential address that introduced the latter concept in 1963, the University of Califor- nia’s President Clark Kerr explained that the modern research university no longer re- sembled a medieval community of scholars but rather an organization that had »some form of contact with nearly every industry, nearly every level of government, nearly every person in its region.«2 Students at the University in these years both participated in a culture of material progress and learned to question it; the University became a center of the student Left. -

Jeffries, Advisor Kevin Boyle Judy Tzu-Chun Wu Copyright by Tyran Kai Steward 2013 Abstract This dissertation provides a historical study of Jim Crow in the North via the interplay of race and sport. It analyzes the 1934 benching of Willis Ward, an African-American football player at the University of Michigan and reveals the racialized social order maintained by Michigan’s famed Athletic Director Fielding Yost. This study probes how Ward’s benching affected his career, especially his work directing hiring practices at the Ford Motor Company. It also explores Ward’s conservative politics and his espousal of policies and practices aimed at maintaining the racial status quo. This project also chronicles how racism toward Ward shaped the politics of his teammate and future U.S. President Gerald Ford who supported affirmative action and civil rights legislation but opposed busing as a means to carry out school desegregation. A significant body of scholarship has examined the history of Jim Crow in the South. This dissertation, in contrast, provides an opportunity to examine the North’s separate but unequal practices. This previously unstudied history of Ward and other black athletes at Michigan offer four
