más amplia con sede en el IIGG de la UBA se desarrolla una metodología cualitativa mediante el análisis de entrevistas semiestructuradas la observación en el terreno y en ciberespacio el estudio de materiales audiovisuales y documentos de los colectivos y bibliografía especíca El objetivo es veri car el valor y el alcance de la apropiación de las TIC intentando demostrar su importancia en la contra la cultura especista Se seleccionaron para el estudio cuatro organizaciones animalistas de Argentina Aso ciación Animalista Libera Especismo Cero La Revolución de la Cuchara y AnimaNaturalis Revista Horizontes Sociológicos | AAS | | JulioDiciembre de ISSN ANAHÍ MENDEZ | E U Como se analizará posteriormente cada una se ha constituido a escala local nacional e in ternacional articulando redes entre sus propios nodos y también con otras organizaciones defensoras de los animales y del medio ambiente Para ello Internet ha sido y es fundamental Ante todo es preciso hacer algunas salvedades En primer lugar este trabajo persigue una visión sociológica acerca del medio ambiente entendiendo que la relación sociedadna turaleza se da a través de la interacción y se establece cultural social e históricamente como un proceso en donde las modicaciones que efectúa el ser humano sobre el ambiente si multáneamente transforman a la sociedad y en esta transformación se altera la naturaleza En este punto retomo el planteo de Antonio Brailovsky sobre la historia ecológica Dice el desarrollo de las sociedades humanas genera cambios en el medio ambiente en el que están insertos Y a su vez los cambios en los ecosistemas condicionan modicaciones en el modo de vida de los seres humanos Se supera la concepción economicista que considera a la naturaleza solamente como un conjunto de recursos naturales apropiables poniendo el acento en la coevolución naturaleza y sociedad Vale decir desde esta mirada el análisis de la sociedad es indisociable de la naturaleza y viceversa En segundo lugar es necesario aclarar que esta ponencia no profundiza en la histo ria del vegetarianismo y el veganismo ni en las similitudes y diferencias tanto entre ambos conceptos como entre los denominados bienestaristas y los abolicionistas como tampoco con el ecologismo y el ambientalismo esa clase de análisis demandaría un trabajo especíco Sólo con la intensión de dar un panorama al lector indico que la historia de la ética VEG1 se remonta al siglo VI a C con las exhortaciones de Pitágoras a favor de una dieta exenta de carne animal entre otros lósofos y pensadores de la época Fue hasta nales del siglo XVIII que el rechazo de los alimentos de origen animal se justicaba con argumentos religiosos y metafísicos sin embargo es a partir de principios del siglo XIX contexto de creciente interés por la salud y una mayor inuencia de las ciencias enla sociedad que se comienzan a formular razonamientos siológicos a favor de no consumir alimentos de origen animal2 No obstante es importante destacar que fue el de noviembre de cuando Donald Watson y Elsie Shri gley fundan la Vegan Society en Leicester Reino Unido A partir de entonces el veganismo queda denido como una losofía de vida que excluye todas las formas deexplotación y crueldad hacia el reino animal e incluye una reverencia a la vida Enla práctica se aplica siguiendo una dieta vegetariana pura y anima el uso de alternativas para todas las materias derivadas totalmente de animales The Vegan News n Desde aquel momento todos los de noviembre las diversas organizaciones animalis tas celebran mundialmente el Día Internacional del Veganismo La expansión de esta ética puede considerarse como un fenómeno de las sociedades contemporáneas con una inuencia creciente desde Estados Unidos y Europa a partir de las décadas de los setenta y los ochenta Contexto en el ualc el capitalismo entra una vez más en crisis y los impactos del industrialismo empiezan a ser cada vez más notorios y la cuestión ambiental habilitando la depredación de los espacios más recónditos del mundo Se ha convertido en un sistema cada vez más dependiente de la ex tracción de recursos naturales y de la explotación de millones de animales En este proceso de globalización de los megaemprendimientos megaminería monocultivos feedlot fracking biotecnología asociados a los proyectos neoliberales el capitalismo expresa su lógica acumu lativa por desposesión en la extracción de los recursosinsumos como en la construcción de mercados en donde colocar los nuevos productos Según Galafassi mientras la naturaleza continúa constituyendo la fuente fundamental para la ob tención de las materias primas los territorios libres liberados para el capital es decir cercados para aquellos intereses y sectores no ligados al capital constitu yen el soporte físicoespacial indispensable para localizar la extracción de natura leza transformándose así la ecosistémica y biodiversidad naturaleza en nada más que recursos naturales Reproduciéndose a partir de la devastación y explotación intensiva de la biomasa y de la exclusión de gran parte de la población el extractivismo capitalista potencia el desarrollo de movimientos contrahegemónicos como por ejemplo es el veganismo. Y al mismo tiempo se trata de un sistema estrechamente vinculado al uso de las TIC La centralidad que éstas ocupan fundamentalmente a partir del nuevo milenio en los pro cesos económicos políticos sociales y culturales tiene un anclaje en la construcción que han hecho los países más ricos del mundo G las Naciones Unidas la OCDE la Comunidad Euro pea y los sectores hegemónicos de los países del denominado Tercer Mundo acerca del pro yecto de la sociedad global de la información Valderrama Una consecuencia de este plan estratégico que ha marcado un cambio en el modelo de desarrollo capitalista es que el conocimiento la comunicación la información y la construcción de signicados desempeñan un rol vertebral en el ejercicio del poder y también de su contraparte el contrapoder suman do a esto su dinamismo en la interconexión del globo agilizando las telecomunicaciones como nunca antes Inmersa en este contexto la cultura digital asimismo denominada cibercultura es el resultado de la imbricación de las TIC en los procesos culturales que se ha gestado mun dialmente ya a comienzos del siglo XXI Lago Martínez Reere al conjunto de técnicas materiales e intelectuales de prácticas actitudes modos de pensamiento y valores que se desarrollan en el ciberespacio espacio online de comunicación creado a partir de la interco nexión mundial de ordenadores conjuntamente con las acciones en el territorio Siguiendo a Lévy en la cibercultura las relaciones se dan entre una multitud de actores

    20 May 2015 Thierry Meeùs Owner Mini-Europe Via e-mail: [email protected] Dear Mr Meeùs, I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) UK and AnimaNaturalis, a Spanish animal rights organisation – along with our hundreds of thousands of supporters throughout Europe – to urge you to update the depiction of Spain in the Mini-Europe park from a bullring to something more representative of modern Spanish culture such as Seville's Plaza de España. Bullfighting is animal abuse, plain and simple. In the ring, the bull has swords plunged into his neck, back and body again and again until blood pours from his wounds and mouth. He is terrified and in excruciating pain. He doesn't want to die, but he can't run away, and soon he won't even be able to stand up. After falling to the floor from exhaustion and massive blood loss, he can only watch as a knife rips into his spinal cord to kill him. This is the experience of bulls killed in Spanish bullfights. Opposition to bullfighting in Spain is already vast and mounting. According to a recent survey, 76 per cent of Spaniards show no interest in bullfights, up from 56 per cent in the '80s, and 76 per cent oppose the use of public funds to support the industry. The entire region of Catalonia is just one of the many locales in Spain that have banned bullfighting for good. The loss-incurring bloodsport of bullfighting could not continue without public subsidies paid by taxpayers.

Vibeke Hansen A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Essex October 2015 Abstract This is a thesis about the changing place of animals in post-Franco Spain, with particular reference to bullfighting, popular festivities, and pet-keeping. The thesis argues that since the ‘transition’ to democracy (1975-1982), which made Spain one of the most liberal social-democratic states in Europe, there have been several notable developments in human-animal relations. In some important respects, Spain has begun to shed its unenviable reputation for cruelty towards animals. Three important changes have occurred. First, bullfighting (corridas) has been banned in the Canary Islands (1991) and in Catalonia (2010). In addition, numerous municipalities have declared themselves against it. Second, although animals are still widely ‘abused’ and killed (often illegally) in local festivities, many have gradually ceased to use live animals, substituting either dead ones or effigies, and those that continue to use animals are subject to increasing legal restrictions. Third, one of the most conspicuous changes has been the growth in popularity of urban pet-keeping, together with the huge expansion of the market for foods, accessories and services - from healthy diets to cemeteries. This article compares essential aspects of pet protection regulations in four countries in Latin America, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay and Mexico. A narrative review of published literature and the websites of the government entities responsible for the formulation and implementation of the regulations in the four countries was carried out with the purpose of establishing a comparison between their content and their performance. Through this review, differences regarding the objectives of the guidelines and the process of their formulation were identified. The actors that intervened in the process of formulation, structure, object, and what is more important, results reported in each country since the implementation of these regulations are also described.

    Lecture First Name Family Name Title of talk Abstract of talk Keynote Speaker Paulina Rivero-Weber Marti Kheel Carol Adams Mongrel Honesty This talk was prompted by conversations with folks who reject veganism because of its presumed purity. Lecture Since we cannot live purely in this world, labeling veganism as purist offers a way to justify maintaining the violent and destructive status quo. I’m interested in the relationship between something being labeled as “hard” or “unachievable” and how those seen as trying to walk that path get framed as seeking purity. I suspect this move enables a type of intellectual passivity. I’ll consider new work that offers nonvegans an opportunity to be less omnivorous while representing vegans as absolutists, difficult, and purists, and the benefits that nonvegans get by situating vegans in this way. These attitudes represent an acceptance of truncated narratives in ecofeminist philosopher Marti Kheel’s terms and, importantly, they represent a type of dishonesty. Historian Timothy Snyder points out that the liberal assumption that cultures will always progress (and not fall into authoritarianism) rests on a fallacy of the “politics of inevitability.” The functioning of teleological fictions that disarm activism and posit optimistic interpretations of the status quo is familiar to vegans. Teleological fictions inform some of the most deeply held justifications of eating meat and dairy: that humans are at the top of the food chain, that we are the evolutionary victors and allowed the spoils (of animals’ bodies and products), and the belief that we are predators not prey. Veganism challenges these fictions, and in doing so may help provide a way of thinking about and undoing the greater teleological naiveté experienced in politics.

    Lush Lobbying Prize 2013 Background Paper Lush Lobbying Prize 2013 – Background Paper - August 2013 1 1 Executive Summary The Lush Prize seeks to reward excellence and innovation by organisations working to end animal testing. The Lobbying category focuses on policy interventions promoting the use of alternatives: Scientific innovation needs to go hand-in-hand with policy change to ensure that end-users of new testing approaches – industry and regulators – are receptive and responsive to the new methods. Such change requires a multifaceted, global approach, including science-based lobbying at the national level or supra-national level to: • Entrench non-animal testing methods in national, EU or OECD programmes of test guidelines • Revise existing guidelines to reflect best practices, including the removal of animal tests, or • Achieve a mandatory requirement for non-animal testing in legislation, regulatory policies, testing guidance, etc. The Lush Prize is not a 3Rs prize but a 1R prize. By this we mean it is only seeking projects working on replacements (rather than reduction and refinement) and seeks to avoid funding projects or initiatives linked to animal testing in other ways. 1.1 Key findings Organisations opposed to animal testing are becoming increasingly skilled at lobbying at a variety of levels and are accepted by regulatory and legislative bodies as informed and reliable stakeholders. NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) have formed coalitions such as the International Council on Animal Protection in OECD Programmes, which was formed to incorporate alternative methods that can replace, reduce, and refine animal use in OECD guidelines and programs. The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) has a stakeholder seat at the European Commission’s committee CARACAL (the Competent Authorities for REACH and CLP, an expert group that advises the European Commission and the European Chemicals Agency) and the European Chemicals Agency’s new committee, the Biocides Products Committee (BPC).

Shirley has also tried to reach a couple of primate NGO's in the region right under Benue without much success. Sybelle she is from CEE4LIFE and she is registered in the UK. She is the only person that has sent some money to this man feeding the animals: Nat. Nat personally feeds small amounts of food a couple of times a week to the 23 adult zoo animals and croc babies, and he also coordinates their feedings. I have spoken with Nat. With the money that CEE4LIFE sent him, he pays to unemployed zoo staff to keep an eye on the animals and to feed the animals daily. There was a flood few days ago, and one of the adult crocs escaped, so the employees helped him to get it on its cage. If you want to help the Benue zoo animals in Nigeria, DO NOT send any funds to F.A.W.S. or one international rescue group in the UK.

One of the key challenges we urge you to tackle during this mandate is that of caged farming systems, which cause immense suffering to animals. We call on you to re-establish the EU as the leader in animal welfare by phasing out the use of cages in farming. EU citizens care deeply about animals. The record-breaking Initiative to End the Cage Age has surpassed the minimum threshold in 21 EU Member States1 – a first in the history of European Citizens’ Initiatives. It also gathered over 1.6 million statements of support from EU citizens. This is very much in line with the latest Eurobarometer poll, which showed that 94% of Europeans place importance on the need to protect the welfare of farm animals. Nonetheless, every year over 300 million animals in Europe spend all, or a significant part, of their lives imprisoned in cages. Egg-laying hens and rabbits raised for meat are kept in space about the area of an A4 sheet of paper, and almost all sows spend half of every year inside cages, in which they cannot even turn around.
