In 1939 Ian’s father, Fred, arrived in the UK as a ten-year-old Jewish refugee from what was then Czechoslovakia. He was the only member of his family to survive – his mother and sisters were murdered in Treblinka. Ian is a supporter of Labour Friends of Israel, a member of the Jewish Labour Movement and has worked closely with the Holocaust Educational Trust, helping secure Government funding for their ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project in 2006.
