University of Alabama at Birmingham UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM Commencement FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 2021 AND SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2021 LEGION FIELD BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA TO OUR GUESTS Welcome to the Spring 2021 Commencement of The University of Alabama at Birmingham. The pageantry of today’s ceremony is the culmination and recognition of years of study, preparation, and achievement of our 80th class of graduates. We hope you find the ceremony both meaningful and memorable, as it reflects the combined efforts of the faculty, the staff, and, of course, our students and their families. Commencement begins with the traditional academic procession. The graduates are led into Legion Field by marshals who are faculty members in their respective college and schools. The faculty, headed by a distinguished group of emeriti professors, follow in order of academic rank and seniority. The last group to enter is the platform party led by the UAB Academic Mace (see page 12). For the Friday evening ceremony, the mace is carried by David A. Schneider, Ph.D., professor and vice-chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics and associate dean of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. He also serves as chair of the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Tenure and Promotions Committee and the Teaching Committee. He is a recipient of the 2019 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2014 UAB Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship. Dr. Schneider’s research includes characterizing trans-acting factors and enzymatic features that control synthesis of ribosomal RNA by RNA polymerase I as well as anti-cancer drug discovery, viral gene expression and cancer cell growth/proliferation. His research lab has maintained continuous, robust extramural support through the year 2026. For the Saturday ceremonies, the mace is carried by Robert M. Centor, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Division of Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine, the 2020 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. Dr. Centor served as associate dean and executive director of the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus from 2005-2017. He is one of the world's leading experts on the sore throat. His seminal work on Group A streptococcal infections as a cause of sore throat is known as the Centor score or Centor criteria in practice guidelines and decision aids for diagnostic purposes. Next are Ray L. Watts, M.D., President of The University of Alabama at Birmingham, members of The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System, and representatives from The University of Alabama System’s Office. Other persons in the platform party include distinguished guests, as well as UAB senior administration and deans. The audience is asked to stand as the procession enters the arena and to remain standing through the singing of the National Anthem. President Watts closes the ceremony after all degrees have been awarded and the UAB Alma Mater has been sung. The audience is asked to stand and to remain standing for the recessional of the platform party. Family and friends are asked to meet the new alumni outside of Legion Field; they will not be allowed on the field. 2 ORDER OF EXERCISES (Friday, April 30, 2021 - 2:00 p.m. Ceremony) Prelude .................................................................................................. • The IR35 MP Hit List the 100 Politicians Most Likely to Lose Their Seats
The UK's leading contractor site. 200,000 monthly unique visitors. GUIDES IR35 CALCULATORS BUSINESS INSURANCE BANKING ACCOUNTANTS INSURANCE MORTGAGES PENSIONS RESOURCES FREE IR35 TEST The IR35 MP hit list The 100 politicians most likely to lose their seats Last December research conducted by ContractorCalculator identified the MPs for whom it will prove most costly to lose the selfemployed vote, and published the top 20 from each party. The results were based on data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and contractor sentiment indicated by a previous ContractorCalculator survey. The full results of this research are now published, with the top 100 MPs, ordered by risk of losing their seat, due to the Offpayroll (IR35) reforms that Treasury, HMRC and the Chancellor are attempting to push through Parliament. In total, 85 MPs hold a majority in Parliament that would feasibly be overturned if the expected turnout of IR35opposing selfemployed voters from their constituency were to vote against them, and we list the next 15, making 100 in total, that are potentially under threat if the self employed voter turnout is higher than expected. "This single piece of damaging policy could prove catastrophic for all parties involved, not least the Tories, who make up 43% of the atrisk seats,” comments ContractorCalculator CEO, Dave Chaplin. “There is also potentially a lot to gain for some, but those in precarious positions will have to act swiftly and earnestly to win over contractors’ trust.” How we identified the atrisk MPs The research leveraged the data and compared the MPs majority at the last election with the likely number of selfemployed voters in their area who would turn out and vote against them.

134 th Commencement MAY 2021 Welcome Dear Temple graduates, Congratulations! Today is a day of celebration for you and all those who have supported you in your Temple journey. I couldn’t be more proud of the diverse and driven students who are graduating this spring. Congratulations to all of you, to your families and to our dedicated faculty and academic advisors who had the pleasure of educating and championing you. If Temple’s founder Russell Conwell were alive to see your collective achievements today, he’d be thrilled and amazed. In 1884, he planted the seeds that have grown and matured into one of this nation’s great urban research universities. Now it’s your turn to put your own ideas and dreams in motion. Even if you experience hardships or disappointments, remember the motto Conwell left us: Perseverantia Vincit, Perseverance Conquers. We have faith that you will succeed. Thank you so much for calling Temple your academic home. While I trust you’ll go far, remember that you will always be part of the Cherry and White. Plan to come back home often. THE TILE WRECK HER TRUE STORY PETER COLLINGS INTERNATIONAL AWARD WINNING AUTHOR, PHOTOGRAPHER & WRECK HUNTER Celebrating 30+ years of publishing Forward by John Womack DEEPLENS.COM 2 DEEPLENS.COM THE TILE WRECK HER TRUE STORY (The silence of the bantinites) CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE RED SEA WRECK ACADEMY For Stephan 3 DEEPLENS.COM PREFACE Back in 1993, when I first revealed the true identity of the “SARA H” at Shag Rock as the SS KINGSTON, the announcement was met with sceptesism.15 years on the name SARA H still appears in poorly researched documents, despite the overwhelming evidence. The same applies with the vessels at the centre of this publication, except that in the case of the MV MARCUS the evidence is un deniable, proven beyond any reasonable doubt and indeed has been accepted by most interested parties (see H2O MAGAZINE, the journal of the RED SEA ASSOCIATION, “A Survivors Tale”) In November 2005 a group of 20 leading experts joined me in the Red Sea for a seminar on the wrecks of the Northern Red Sea. Amongst them were marine engineers, maritime historians, researchers and members of our wreck hunting team with an average of 1000+ logged on these wrecks. Also on board was an all- knowing photo journalist (although he didn’t know the CV’s of his fellow passengers). During one of the nightly presentations the facts contained in this publication were presented to the guests, some facts being revealed for the first time, and the guests were encouraged to dispute the evidence, conclusions and facts, and indeed to present counter arguments.
