Khan’s seminal work is located within the critical debates on the notion of national cinema that preoccupied film scholars, predominantly in the West, from the mid 1980s through the 1990s. Comparatively, Khan’s conceptualization is juxtaposed in this article for a critical appraisal between the influential Australian and British cinema contexts, as both are forms of national cinemas in their own rights. This article then revisits Khan’s scholarship on Malay cinema, particularly the factors shaping his ‘true picture’ idealism in the context of emerging Malaysian cinema in terms of it as a developmental and critical sphere of cosmopolitan aesthetics. Finally, this article will evaluate Khan’s belief in the relevance of social realism as a philosophical interpretation for an ideologically driven cinema-of-intent and whether or not it can serve as a framework for the future of Malaysian cinema.     REPORT OF THE READING MONTH CARNIVAL 1-31 JULY 2003 1. BACKGROUND 1.1 The National Reading Month celebration is an annual agenda which takes place throughout the month of July every year. Activities relating to reading and knowledge are planned and implemented throughout country at all levels such as the National Library of Malaysia, State Public Libraries, academic libraries, schools, ministries and government departments, the private sector and the non-government organizations(NGO) . 1.2 The carnival concept was the chosen strategy for the National Reading Month 2003, with the purpose of instilling awareness to the society particularly the youths and teenagers, that reading is an enjoyable pastime as well as knowledge enhancing. 2. OBJECTIVE The Reading Month Carnival which targeted the youths and teenagers had the following objectives: (i) Encourage more members of the society especially the youths and teenagers to participate in events and activities organised for them at the Merdeka Square and at the National Library of Malaysia. (ii) Instil awareness to society particularly youths and teenagers the importance and benefits of the reading habit in the era of information and communication technology. (iii) Involve society especially the youths and teenagers in reading activities towards making the reading culture as a lifestyle. 3. THEME/SLOGAN The theme read@lifestyle is maintained for this year. It highlights the significant aspect of Vision 2020 which is the creation of an informed and knowledgeable society. An informed society can only be achieved through a reading habit which should necessarily be the lifestyle. 4. PROMOTION AND PUBLICITY The promotion and publicity programs have been more aggressive and widespread this year as compared to 2002, which befits the carnival concept that took place at the Merdeka Square Kuala Lumpur.

However, in a case when the arts have to be studied in correlation with funding, involving researchers from two different fields, it raises several interesting questions about how such a research can be carried out, and its data can be shared, analysed and become useful for both parties. In highlighting this experience, this paper will present an ongoing research on the different perspectives of film funding in Malaysia among different parties involved in the filmmaking industry such as bankers, governmental film bodies and filmmakers. The research uses Cognition Affect Behavior (CAB) Paradigm as its conceptual model basis. Initial data is obtained via in-depth interviews, which then acts as the basis for a quantitative methodology for further data gathering and analysis. This paper will discuss the initial data gathering procedures and findings. 1.0 Introduction The number of films being produced in Malaysia is relatively few compared to those of its neighboring countries like Thailand and the Philippines, which produced 84 films (NationMaster.com., 2004) and 50 films (Thai World View, 2004) respectively in 2003. With 16 films in 2003, Malaysia shares similar output figures with Vietnam and Indonesia, despite the differences in the general population size (UNESCO, 2001).
