COOS BAY — Coos County lost 210 jobs in December, while Curry County lost 80, said the Oregon Employment Department on Wednes- day. In Coos County, seasonally expected reduc- tions in leisure and hospitality totaled 80 over the month, construction employment fell by 20 and mining and logging employment dropped by 60, mostly because of layoffs at Oregon Resources Corporation. The delayed opening of crab season caused a loss of 30 jobs in food manufacturing. In Coos County, since December 2011, pri- vate-sector employment decreased by 160 jobs. Sectors that gained jobs over the year were pro- fessional and business services, which gained 210 jobs, and educational and health services, which gained 130. Food manufacturing lost 160 jobs, and government lost 130, mostly at the local and tribal level. Coos County’s seasonally adjusted unem- ployment rate was 10.2 percent in December, By Lou Sennick, The World compared with 10.3 percent in November and Deb Larson works with one of her eighth-grade students, Mike Hanket, on his colonial newspaper project Wednesday in the Marshfield High School 10.8 percent a year ago. library. The class is researching historical figures in colonial America and creating small newspapers with what they find of the era. But the county’s declining population means that 25,104 county residents were employed — about 850 fewer than were employed a year ago. Curry County’s seasonally adjusted unem- ployment rate was 11.1 percent, down from 11.3 percent in November and 11.5 percent a year ago. Is it working?
