Biden in equity push New virus variant in NY spurs caution, concern NEW YORK, Feb 27, (AP): Another mutated version of the coronavirus has popped up in New York City, and experts reacted to the the news with a mixture of caution and con- cern. The new variant fi rst appeared in the New York area in late November, and has since cropped up in neighboring states, according to researchers at the California Institute of Technology, one of two teams to share their work this week. But how problematic the variant may be isn’t known yet. Viruses are constantly mutating - or making typos in their genetic code - as they spread and make copies of themselves. “Most are not of particular concern,” said Francois Bal- loux, director of the University College London’s Genetics Institute. However, he added, “Noticing them early, fl agging them, raising concern is useful.” That’s because some genetic tweaks can be worrisome, especially if they help the virus spread more eas- ily, make it more deadly or curb the effectiveness of vaccines. Scientists use genome sequencing and other re- search to fi gure out which are a poten- tial problem. New York City health offi cials and Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday sought to tamp down worries about the new variant, emphasizing that the De Blasio new research is preliminary and little is known about the variant. “Some variants are just that, they’re variants.” said Dr. Jay Varma, senior health adviser to the mayor. Grammys snub No. 1 ‘Blinding Lights,’ and more hits left in dark By Mesfi n Fekadu

he wattage in The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” Twasn’t strong enough to compete at the Grammys — but the song isn’t the only electrifying No. 1 hit that the Recording Academy snubbed. The Weeknd joins an exclusive club of songs that were crowned biggest hit of the year by Billboard but fell short at the Grammy Awards. It’s been 10 years since a song that dominated the year in music didn’t garner a nomination at the Gram- mys, and that was “TiK ToK,” the drunken party an- them and multi-platinum debut single from pop singer Kesha. And in the last 30 years, only fi ve No. 1 songs of the year have missed out at the Grammys. Others joining The Weeknd and Kesha are the rock-pop hit “Hanging by a Moment” from Lifehouse, the top song of 2001; R&B trio Next’s racy hit “Too Close,” which won over 1998; and the 1996 pop culture moment that was the “Macarena,” by Span- ish duo Los del Río. Kesha “It’s horrible company to be in,” Ron Aniello, who produced “Hanging by a Mo- ment” and discovered Lifehouse, said with a laugh. “We’re talking about industry people voting, we’re not talking about the public, so it’s quite different,” Aniello continued. “I think that was a very popular song for the general public but I’m not sure how seri- ously (the Grammys) took the band to put them fi rst for voting.
