Schaney Abstract Peatlands and Histosols in Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, West Virginia Mitzy L. Schaney Canaan Valley in West Virginia contains a greater area of peatlands than any other locality in the mid-Atlantic Highlands. Extensive fieldwork focused on peat stratigraphy and pedology, combined with high-resolution radiocarbon dating, was used to evaluate five peatlands within Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge (CVNWR) in the central Appalachian Mountains. One hundred soil cores were profiled and described, 30 with laboratory data, including 52 radiocarbon dates. Calibrated basal peat dates among the five mapped peatlands indicate a late Pleistocene timeframe for the onset of peat genesis, ranging from ~18,600 to ~15,200 cal yr BP. The dates for peat initiation are older than those published previously from other central Appalachian Mountain peatlands. Peat accumulation rates varied from 0.02 mm/yr to 1.34 mm/yr with a mean of 0.14 mm/yr. Results of age-depth profiles show similar trends in peat accumulation: moderately high peat accumulation during the late Pleistocene, below average peat accumulation in the early Holocene, the slowest peat accumulation (if any) during the mid-Holocene, and rapid peat accumulation in the early late Holocene. Very few samples were collected correlating to the last 2,000 years; however, those few suggest a possible decrease in peat accumulation. CVNWR peatlands hold pedomemory of latest Pleistocene and Holocene climatic fluctuations in the central Appalachian Mountains. The field investigation revealed a distinct pattern of organic soil horizons throughout five study peatlands. The anaerobic lower portion of the peat soil profile consists of varied thicknesses of a combination of hemic and sapric soil materials, characteristically layered as a hemic horizon, underlain by a sapric horizon, underlain by another hemic horizon, these also correlate with general trends in the age-depth plots. Late Pleistocene peat initiation and accumulation form the lower hemic horizon, correlating with general warming after the Last Glacial Maximum. Between 10,000 and 4,200 cal yr BP, low peat accumulation and decomposition of previously deposited peat prevailed, forming the sapric, or most decomposed, horizon in the anaerobic portion of the soil profile. This early to mid- Holocene interval of minimal accumulation and significant decomposition indicates a climatic change to a dryer environment. The upper hemic horizon within the anaerobic portion of the soil profile formed during the wetter early late Holocene. A sapric horizon at the water table is overlain by an aerobic fibric surface horizon in uppermost portion of the soil profile. Soil profiles were classified according to Soil Taxonomy, and soil cores were mapped using the Soil Survey Manual. CVNWR Histosols were classified as Dysic, frigid Sapric Haplohemists and given an official series description and new soil series name of Canaan Valley peat. The five CVNWR peatland landforms are now mapped with a new map unit, Canaan Valley peat, moist, 0 to 3 percent slopes (map symbol CavA), totaling 246 hectares. These rare soils support unique ecosystems of high conservation value and ecological significance. Although biologists occasionally use live-trapping, nest boxes have been the primary tool for population surveys for the WVNFS. Biologists place transects of nest boxes in a survey area and check the boxes periodically for occupancy, typically twice each year, in fall and spring. Northern flying squirrels are nocturnal, leaving their nests to forage at night and returning during the day, which facilitates daytime nest box monitoring. The success of nest box monitoring relies on the squirrels occupying the boxes during the day of the survey. Menzel (2003) found that no WVNFS in her radio telemetry study used nest boxes (despite their availability) as den sites. All nests were either natural tree cavities (i.e. dens) or dreys (i.e. outside nests constructed of leaves, twigs, lichens, etc.). She also noted WVNFS used multiple den sites, switching nests on average every 3 days in summer, and utilizing up to 12 den sites per month in lesser quality habitat (Menzel 2000, Menzel et al. 2004). Further, the nest box monitoring program conducted by the DNR had a 2% average success rate of squirrel occupancy per box checked. These data confirm the difficulty of capturing squirrels via nest boxes and caution against relying on nest box survey results to determine occupied habitat, i.e., although a captured individual affirms presence, an empty nest box does not necessarily signify absence or unoccupied habitat.

    AREA INFORMATION The area is known as the Potomac Highlands. The Allegheny Mountains run right through the region which is the highest watershed for the Potomac River, the largest river feeding into the Chesapeake Bay. The region is renowned for amazing views, high elevation blueberry and spruce stands, dense rhododendron thickets, hundreds of Brook Trout streams, and miles of backcountry trails. Much of the Potomac Highlands is within the one million acre Monongahela National Forest which features National Wilderness areas like Otter Creek, Dolly Sods, Cranberry Glades, Roaring Plains West, and Laurel Fork North. The region is ideal for hiking, rock climbing, skiing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and hunting which are all popular activities in the area. The Shavers Fork is a stocked trout stream and maintained by WV Division of Natural Resources, as are many other rivers in the area. Wonderful skiing can be experienced at Timberline, Canaan Valley, Whitegrass Nordic Center Ski areas and Snowshoe Mountain Resort, which are all less than 40 miles from our door. State Parks and forests in the area include Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, Audra, Kumbrabow, Seneca, and Cathedral. Federal Recreation areas include Spruce Knob & Seneca Rocks management area, Smoke Hole Canyon, Stuarts Recreation Area, Gaudineer Knob, and Spruce Knob Lake. The region is within 5 hours of half of the nation’s population yet offers a mountain playground second to none. Elkins deserves its high ranking in America's Best Small Art Towns. Elkins is home to Davis and Elkins College and the Augusta Heritage Arts Center, The Mountain State Forest Festival and our thriving Randolph County Community Arts Center (www.randolpharts.org).

While West Virginia has been blessed with approximately one million acres of National Forest land and another 500,000 acres of state-owned or managed land, one region of the State has had limited public land available to outdoor enthusiasts—until now! Over the past year, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources officials have partnered with The Conservation Fund to acquire 31,218 acres of public land in the west-central region of the state. These efforts have resulted in the creation of seven new wildlife management areas (WMAs), as well as expansion of three other WMAs. The new properties are in Calhoun, Doddridge, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt and Wood counties. Funds from various sources were used in this land acquisition project, including hunting license monies, Wildlife Restoration Program federal funds, as well as contributions from various pipeline development companies and non-governmental organizations. I would like to thank Atlantic Coast Pipeline, LLC, Dominion Energy Transmission, Inc., and TC Energy for their monetary donations. The contributions are a result of an agreement between the pipeline development companies and the DNR to provide conservation measures for forest-dependent wildlife and their associated habitats affected as a result of development of natural pipeline projects. Our staff will manage these new lands to enhance essential wildlife habitat for a variety of forestland species.

    Monongahela National Forest Administrative Correction 15 August 12, 2010 Changes to Management Prescription 8.2 Areas Due to New Information Under the 2000 Planning Rule (36 CFR 219.31), the following administrative corrections and additions may be made at any time, are not plan amendments or revisions, and do not require public notice or the preparation of an environmental document under Forest Service NEPA procedures: (1) Corrections and updates of data and maps; (2) Updates to activity lists and schedules as required by § 219.30(d)(1)-(6); (3) Corrections of typographical errors or other non-substantive changes; and (4) Changes in monitoring methods other than those required in a monitoring strategy. The following corrections are a result of new information from the USDI National Park Service about National Natural Landmarks (NNLs) on the Monongahela National Forest (MNF). During a recent visit to inspect NNLs on the MNF, Carolyn Davis of the NPS compared her list of NNLs on the Forest to the Forest Ecologist’s list, and two discrepancies were found. First, the Falls of Hills Creek area was not on the NPS list as an NNL. Second, the Germany Valley Karst Area was on the NPS list but not on the MNF list of NNLs. Therefore, the following administrative corrections are being made to NNLs, which are identified as Management Prescription 8.2 in the MNF Forest Plan. WALCOTT, Director United States Geological Survey. 3 A GAZETTEER OF WEST VIRGINIA. HENRY GANNETT. DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE. The State of West Virginia was cut off from Virginia during the civil war and was admitted to the Union on June 19, 1863. As orig­ inally constituted it consisted of 48 counties; subsequently, in 1866, it was enlarged by the addition -of two counties, Berkeley and Jeffer­ son, which were also detached from Virginia. The boundaries of the State are in the highest degree irregular. Starting at Potomac River at Harpers Ferry,' the line follows the south bank of the Potomac to the Fairfax Stone, which was set to mark the headwaters of the North Branch of Potomac River; from this stone the line runs due north to Mason and Dixon's line, i. e., the southern boundary of Pennsylvania; thence it follows this line west to the southwest corner of that State, in approximate latitude 39° 43i' and longitude 80° 31', and from that corner north along the western boundary of Pennsylvania until the line intersects Ohio River; from this point the boundary runs southwest down the Ohio, on the northwestern bank, to the mouth of Big Sandy River.
