This news- issue of The Tachinid Times. This is the largest issue of the letter accepts submissions on all aspects of tachinid biology newsletter since it began in 1988, so there still seems to be and systematics, but please keep in mind that this is not a a place between peer-reviewed journals and Internet blogs peer-reviewed journal and is mainly intended for shorter for a medium of this sort. This year’s issue has a diverse news items that are of special interest to persons involved assortment of articles, a few announcements, a listing of in tachinid research. Student submissions are particularly recent literature, and a mailing list of subscribers. The welcome, especially abstracts of theses and accounts of Announcements section is more sizable this year than usual studies in progress or about to begin. I encourage authors and I would like to encourage readers to contribute to this to illustrate their articles with colour images, since these section in the future. This year it reproduces the abstracts add to the visual appeal of the newsletter and are easily of two recent theses (one a Ph.D. and the other a M.Sc.), incorporated into the final PDF document. -

Van Driesche2 1CSIRO Entomology, Private Bag No. 3, Indooroopilly Queensland 4068, Australia 2Department of Entomology, University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA 01003 Abstract Before releasing exotic natural enemies for biological control of weeds, host range tests are almost universally required by authorities, to ensure that agents are unlikely to have detrimental impacts on non-target plants. However, for biological control of arthropod pests, tests to determine the potential host range of exotic agents have not been so widely practiced, leading to concerns that agents once established may have undesired impacts on beneficial organisms and native fauna. The rationale for host range tests is similar for weeds and arthropod projects and the centrifugal method for selecting non-target taxa related to a target is applicable to both, but the taxonomic relationships for arthropods are often not as well known as for plants. The number and range of non-target arthropods to be tested with an exotic agent must be selected carefully, since it is impractical to maintain in culture an extensive range of taxa. Non- target beneficial or threatened arthropod taxa may be priorities for testing as potential hosts but their life histories are sometimes unknown or appropriate stages may be difficult to obtain or culture. Tritrophic agent/ host/plant interactions are not uncom- mon and difficult to evaluate, and predators need special evaluation when compared with parasitoids. -

This new species has 12 gill filaments, as do S. duodenicornium Pepinelli, Hamada & Trivinho-Strixino, S. guianense Wise, S. hirtipupa Lutz, S. perplexum Shelley, Maia-Herzog, Lunas Dias & Couch and S. scutistriatum Lutz, but it can be distinguished from these other species by a combination of characters observed at the pupal and adult stages. DNA barcoding showed that Simulium litobranchium n. sp. exhibits more than 4% nucleotide divergence in cytochrome oxidase I from three other closely related species in the Neotropical subgenus S. -

INTRODUCTION This project arose out of studies of the European spruce sawfly, Gilpinia hercyniae (Htg.), in connection with the Canadian Forest Insect Survey at the Dominion Entomological Laboratories, Fr~dericton,N. B. Bessn selerta (Mg.) had been observed as a parasite of the larch sawfIy, Pristiphnm srkhsoni (Htg.), but particular interest was aroused in ir a5 a parasite occurring nn the Europearl spruce sawfly. The latter host was frequently louncl to bear the eggs and in- tegumental funnels of B. selecta. The ol,ject was to 5tucly its I>iolngy and ef- fectivness as a possible control factor of the spruce sawfly. However, great difficulty was experienced in rearing the host due to high mortality caused by disease. Hence the original aims were not attained to the entire satisfaction of the author. Bessa selecta generally is referred to as a parasite of sawflies and consid- erable evidence of its presence is found among them. It is now known, how- ever, that so many mishaps befall it during development from the egg to the adult that it is not considered by the author to have exerted any great amount of controI on the spruce ~awtly. Undoubtedly it did play a part, along with other controls, and possibly is a more important factor in the environmental resislance of such iornmr a5 the larch sawfly and the mountain ash sawfly, Pristi- phora geniculata (Hgt.) . Only brief notes were found in the literature on Brssn selecta. -

Nineteen species were identified.The genus Buquetia and five species are recorded for the first time in Serbia. A checklist based on literature data and internet sources is given here.
