Wrestling with Manhood – Abridged Version
1 MEDIA EDUCATION F O U N D A T I O N 60 Masonic St. Northampton, MA 01060 | TEL 800.897.0089 | [email protected] | www.mediaed.org Wrestling With Manhood Boys, Bullying & Battering (Abridged Version) Transcript FANS: Welcome! Finally the Rock has come back to Springfield. You know, it’s good clean fun. Honestly, I wouldn’t let my son watch it. This is Austin’s middle finger. Too much violence. That and a lot of kids want to be like Stone Cold so they’ll drink beer. The female wrestlers, I think, are tremendous athletes. Big boobs and ripping each other’s clothes off. She’s a whore. Sometimes they get naked. The women are just their little playthings. The things they make them do, get on the ground and bark (barking sounds). That was pretty cool what they did to Trish. It’s promoting men beating on women. They want to come into the man’s world, they deserve to be treated just like a man. If a man is hitting a woman what is that showing the little kid? It’s not the WWF’s responsibility to raise them kids. It’s no worse than watching a movie or watching a soap opera or watching television. It’s entertainment. It’s entertainment. It’s just entertainment. I think it’s only entertainment, yeah. SUT JHALLY: You know it’s really difficult to get people to take professional wrestling seriously. Whenever I say that I’m working on this project on wrestling, people start smiling and laughing, almost as if to say “ how can you take this stuff so seriously. -

Raven HardcoreSingles WWF Hardcore Championship-G3 1Raw 3:05.34 35 Mx-2-E-1-2 Better than average elements in this one. Like how the competitors got to sing the weapons early and that they still had a suitable amount of regular hand to hand combat. RavenEffect-Pin; Broke good and into some good weapons action quickly, moved good enough, held on. Match moved good enough. The 35 does not look encouraging, but the merits were good given the time which should be considered. Somewhat enjoyable. 1. Big Show v 2. Shawn Stasiak Singles 2Raw 1:24.99 11 Mx-2-1 Generally surprised to see that Stasiak got any offense at all. That's probably the element keeping this one out of the single digit range. Though Stasiak did get some Chokeslam-Pin; Held some OK action after a similar start, too anticlimactic to have much impact. shots in, finish was foreseeable eliminating any real added effect that this could have received. Maybe a close fall for Stasiak might have helped. Fourth straight for Show. 1. Crash v 2. Jacqueline SinglesIntergender 3Raw 0:29.98 01 (02.61) 1-2 As the short line says, four moves. I do not think there is a person alive that could make a convincing argument favoring a match with four moves. No exception here. That SunsetFlip-Pin; Nature of match too abrupt, only four moves comprised whole match, barely breaks zero. -
"It's Still Real to Me": Contemporary Professional Wrestling, Neo-Liberalism, and the Problems of Performed/Real Violence
"It's Still Real to Me": Contemporary Professional Wrestling, Neo-Liberalism, and the Problems of Performed/Real Violence Brian Jansen Canadian Review of American Studies, Volume 50, Number 2, Summer 2020, pp. 302-330 (Article) Published by University of Toronto Press For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/761215 [ Access provided at 4 Sep 2020 14:29 GMT from St Mary's University ] “It’s Still Real to Me”: Contemporary Professional Wrestling, Neo-Liberalism, and the Problems of Performed/ Real Violence Brian Jansen 10.3138/cras.2018.024 50 2 Abstract: Beginning from the premise (vis-à-vis wrestler-turned-scholar Laurence de Garis) that professional wrestling scholarship has historically overlooked the embodied, physical dimension of the form in favour of its drama, and reflecting on a series of professional wrestling story-lines that have blurred the lines between staged performance (“kayfabe”) and reality, this article suggests that the business of professional wrestling offers a vivid case study for the rise and dissemination of what political theorist Wendy Brown calls neo-liberal rationality: the dissemination of the market model to every aspect and activity of human life. Drawing on Brown’s work, the language of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) contracts, and professional wres- tling’s territorial history, this article argues that contemporary story-lines in professional wrestling rationalize, economize, and trivialize the form’s very real violent labour, even rendering audiences complicit in said violence— while serving also as a potent vehicle for understanding the metaphorical (and sometimes literal) violence of neo-liberal rationality more broadly. -
