LIV (2019): 227–258 PL ISSN 0001-5229 DOI 10.4467/00015229AAC.19.013.11890 ESZTER SOÓS THE SETTLEMENTS OF THE PRZEWORSK CULTURE IN HUNGARY Abstract: In the last decade, the Hungarian research of settlements belonging to the Przeworsk culture, generally identified with the Germanic Vandals, yielded important new results. The aim of this paper is to summarize these latest results based on which it also discusses the extension of the settlement territory, the problems of relative chronology, the evolution of material culture as well as the relations of the above-mentioned Germanic ethnic group in the Roman Imperial Age1. INTRODUCTION For a long time, remains of cremation burials were the only phenomena which Hungarian and international research brought into relation with the expansion of the Przeworsk culture in the Carpathian Basin (Bóna 1986, 63; Olędzki 1992; Godłowski 1993; Olędzki 1999; Olędzki 2001). Meanwhile, the identification of settlements encountered many difficulties. From the 1950s onwards, pottery finds recovered during probe excavations were related to certain ethnic groups based on their typology and decoration. As a result, hand-formed, coarse ware with plastic decoration was usually identified as Dacian, while most of the wheel-thrown pottery was defined as Celtic, and hand-formed fine polished ware as Germanic (Lamiová-Schmiedlová 1969; Végh 1964; 1985; 1989; 1999). Accordingly, a mixed Culture including Dacian, Celtic and Germanic ethnic elements was identified in the Early Roman Period (Lamiová-Schmiedlová 1969, 458-466; Olędzki 2014). Those abandoned oil and gas wells (AOGWs) are often located in areas with a prospective geothermal potential and might be retrofitted to a geothermal system without high-cost drilling. In Poland, there are thousands of wells, either operating, abandoned or negative, that might be used for different geothermal applications. Thus, the aim of this paper is not only to review geothermal and petroleum facts about the Eastern Carpathian Foredeep, but also to find out the areas, geological structures or just AOGWs, which are the most prospective in case of geothermal utilization. Due to the inseparability of geological settings with both oil and gas, as well as geothermal conditionings, firstly, the geological background of the analyzed region was performed, considering mainly the autochthonous Miocene formation.     APRIL 2017 T A S Z A R E K A N D G R O M A D Z K I 1221 Deadly Tornadoes in Poland from 1820 to 2015 MATEUSZ TASZAREK Department of Climatology, Institute of Physical Geography and Environmental Planning, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, and Skywarn Poland, Warsaw, Poland JAKUB GROMADZKI Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland (Manuscript received 14 April 2016, in final form 9 October 2016) ABSTRACT Using historical sources derived from 12 Polish digital libraries, an investigation into killer tornado events was carried out. Although some of the cases took place more than 150 years ago, it was still possible to identify tornado phenomena and the course of events. This study has shown that historical sources contain dozens of tornado reports, sometimes with information precise enough to reconstruct the tornado damage paths. In total, 26 newly identified deadly tornado cases were derived from the historical sources and the information on 11 currently known was expanded. An average of 1–2 killer tornadoes with 5 fatalities may be depicted for each decade and this rate is decreasing over time. It was estimated that 5%–10% of significant tornadoes in Poland have caused fatalities and the average number of fatalities per significant tornado was roughly 0.27. Most of the cases were reported in late July and early August. The majority of deaths and injuries were associated with victims being lifted or crushed by buildings (usually a wooden barn). Most of these cases took place in rural areas but some tornadoes hit urban areas, causing a higher number of fatalities.

The Upper San River basin in the second half of the 1st millennium BC Abstract: The ‘Celtic episode’ of the prehistoric Sanok region should be associated with a group of colonists from the south who, during phase LT C, used the local brine springs to produce salt and supply it to the population of the Upper Tisa River basin. For now, no finds definitely associated with phases LT B or LT D have been discovered in the region. The settlers probably relied on both agriculture and animal husbandry to sustain their communities. It seems unlikely they were able to produce any food surpluses, considering the unfavourable climate and poor soil conditions. When the expansion of Dacian tribes to the south of the Carpathians began to cause shifts in the political landscape and the trade routes’ network, the San River Valley cultural centre lost its economic significance and entered a period of decline. Presumably, some of the population may have migrated north into the more fertile lands, while others might have returned to the areas of their origin. According to the available data, there seems to be no clear continuity between the La Tène occupation and the oldest Przeworsk culture finds dated to the end of the early pre-Roman period. Via Regia The objective of the paper is to present the origin and development of the first Ukrainian sec tion of the Way of St. James – the Lviv Way of St. James . Authors of the paper have also indicated the possibilities of development of the pilgrimages and religious tourism at the- Polish-Ukrainian borderland on the basis of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. In the research related to religious tourism in the examined area only Catholic church sanc tuaries (Catholic church of the Latin rite and Byzantine-Ukrainian rite) located in the frontier zone at the Polish-Ukrainian borderland were taken into account.

    Adolf Juzwenko Ossolineum. 200 years with the people in search of their way to independence In the 1790s, count Józef Maksymilian Ossoli ński was in Vienna, seeking support for patriotic initiatives intended at preventing the collapse of the Polish state. Because it turned out to be impossible to prevent, Ossoli ński decided he should engage himself in the protection of national identity, historical memory and the will of the people to remain themselves. The family establishment of the Ossolineum Library, presented by the count to the emperor of Austria on 18 October 1816, was approved on 4 June 1817. It was indeed a success – after nearly twenty years of attempts, taken during various conflicts tearing Europe, Ossoli ński managed to give his compatriots an institution which proved to be increasingly successful in supporting Polish resistance against forced Russification and Germanisation. At the turn of the 20 th century, the arrangement of political powers in Europe had changed radically. When the Institute celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 1917, Europe had been at war for three years. The conflict continued between powers divided into two camps – Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. On the Eastern front, Germany and Austria-Hungary struggled against Russia, on the Western one – France and Great Britain fought against Germany. All parties were exhausted by the conflict, the armies – demoralised by Bolshevik propaganda. Eventually, United States' involvement determined the fate of the war. The chances for deep political changes in Europe grew. Nations of Europe, previously deprived of sovereignty, had begun to reach for independence. When the war ended, on 11 November 1918, Poles had begun to build their own state.
