The Soviets refused to recognise the legitimate Polish authorities loyal to the Polish Government-in-Exile based in London. Thus, as they progressed, they disarmed the Home Army (AK) detachments they met along the way which remained loyal to their government. This persuaded the Polish authorities to return to a concept that had been shelved earlier, of staging an uprising in the capital – Warsaw. The Commander-in-Chief of the Home Army, General Tadeusz Komorowski (pseudonym “Bór”) was to explain later: “Fighting everywhere, we could not remain passive on our own land… The nation that wants to live in freedom cannot be passive at moments when its fate is being decided.” On July 26, 1944, the Polish Government-in-Exile authorized General Bór-Komorowski and its Home Delegate – J S Jankowski, to commence armed action with the aim of liberating Warsaw. Soviet radio-stations were also calling for an uprising. With news of the Soviet forces approaching the city, on July 31, 1944, General Bór-Komorowski gave the order to rise up. This order was given to Colonel Antoni Chrusciel (pseudonym: “Monter’) who issued an order setting the time of the uprising to commence at 17.00 hours on August 1, 1944. The Home Army forces of the Warsaw District numbered about 50,000 soldiers of whom 23,000 were combat-ready. -

Mierzejewska1, Anna Rodo2, Katarzyna Goździk3, Jolanta Behnke‑Borowczyk4, Dorota Kiewra5, Natalia Kartawik4 and Anna Bajer1 Abstract Background: The signifcance of tick‑borne diseases has increased considerably in recent years. Because of the unique distribution of the tick species Dermacentor reticulatus in Poland, comprising two expanding populations, Eastern and Western that are separated by a Dermacentor‑free zone, it is important to conduct studies on the process of tick expansion and emergence of canine babesiosis. The main aim of the current study was to monitor the expan‑ sion of D. reticulatus populations from spring 2016 to autumn 2018 to determine (1) the actual geographical range of this tick species, and (2) and the seasonal/annual shift in range limits and changes in distance between Western and Eastern populations of ticks (the size of the non‑endemic area). Methods: Ticks were collected in spring/autumn during a 3‑year study. From each season and year at least three pairs of sites from the Western and Eastern populations were selected. Then the mean distance between paired sites was calculated for each season and year. We collected and analyzed data from veterinary clinics on the number of canine babesiosis cases treated in the clinic during a whole year (2018). Results: Accordingly, further expansion of the two D. reticulatus populations was recorded, mainly along river basins. -

Location over the water areas gave the opportunity for develop- ment and increase of prosperity. And although water was also a threat and cause of damage, the benefits of its neighbour- hood prevailed. Today, the challenge for developing cities is a climate change observed in recent decades, which results in violent natural phenomena, e.g. floods and hurricanes. One of the main problems faced by residents of housing estates lo- cated on the water is the increasing risk of flooding. Actions are taken to adapt the functioning of the urban structure and buildings to new water conditions. -

Ladies and Gentlemen, Every Year Around the International Museum
Ladies and gentlemen, Every year around the International Museum Day on 18th May, a specific spectacle takes place in numerous cities in Poland and throughout Europe, initiated modestly by museums exactly. In the beginning, it aimed to promote those institutions, alter the ambiance associated with museums as places where one walks around wearing house slippers and talks in a quiet voice. The Long Night of Museums has shown just how extraordinarily interesting collections owned by these institutions can be, and how originally they may be presented. Others started to envy the success – not in terms of the turnout, but creativity and the ability to get across to the public with the seemingly difficult message behind the high culture. Due to being active in fields not associated with culture, state administration, courts, temples of various faiths, schools, services, and many, many more, wanted their share in this success. They used their chance superbly. This is the Long Night of Museums cultivated by Warsaw for over a decade now. A modest event with participation of 11 museums evolved into an enormous, logistically developed happening encompassing Warsaw and its surroundings. Every institution participating in the project wants to present itself in an original, unique way. They encourage viewers-guests to come by preparing special exhibitions and presentations, on show for this one night only. They open their doors, despite remaining diligently guarded on a daily basis. They think up programmes for children. And the experience is a really big thing for the youngest ones as well, because oftentimes they stay in the city with their parents until midnight.
