Makers: Women in Hollywood
WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD OVERVIEW: MAKERS: Women In Hollywood showcases the women of showbiz, from the earliest pioneers to present-day power players, as they influence the creation of one of the country’s biggest commodities: entertainment. In the silent movie era of Hollywood, women wrote, directed and produced, plus there were over twenty independent film companies run by women. That changed when Hollywood became a profitable industry. The absence of women behind the camera affected the women who appeared in front of the lens. Because men controlled the content, they created female characters based on classic archetypes: the good girl and the fallen woman, the virgin and the whore. The women’s movement helped loosen some barriers in Hollywood. A few women, like 20th century Fox President Sherry Lansing, were able to rise to the top. Especially in television, where the financial stakes were lower and advertisers eager to court female viewers, strong female characters began to emerge. Premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime allowed edgy shows like Sex in the City and Girls , which dealt frankly with sex from a woman’s perspective, to thrive. One way women were able to gain clout was to use their stardom to become producers, like Jane Fonda, who had a breakout hit when she produced 9 to 5 . But despite the fact that 9 to 5 was a smash hit that appealed to broad audiences, it was still viewed as a “chick flick”. In Hollywood, movies like Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games , with strong female characters at their center and strong women behind the scenes, have indisputably proven that women centered content can be big at the box office. -

Brands Dagmar Hamilton Mark Lawrence Michael Stoff Watchmen in the Night: The House Judiciary Committee’s Impeachment Inquiry of Richard Nixon by Benjamin Jonah Koch, B.A.; M.A. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2011 Dedication To my grandparents For their love and support Acknowledgements I owe an immense debt of gratitude to my dissertation supervisor, David Oshinsky. When I arrived in graduate school, I did not know what it meant to be a historian and a writer. Working with him, especially in the development of this manuscript, I have come to understand my strengths and weaknesses, and he has made me a better historian. Thank you. The members of my dissertation committee have each aided me in different ways. Michael Stoff’s introductory historiography seminar helped me realize exactly what I had gotten myself into my first year of graduate school—and made it painless. I always enjoyed Mark Lawrence’s classes and his teaching style, and he was extraordinarily supportive during the writing of my master’s thesis, as well as my qualifying exams. I workshopped the first two chapters of my dissertation in Bill Brands’s writing seminar, where I learned precisely what to do and not to do. -
River Phoenix Another Fake Death
return to updates River Phoenix another fake death by Miles Mathis First published August 11, 2015 No, River Phoenix did not live on as Mark Dice, but he did live on. We are told he died on October 31, 1993. That is your first and most important red flag. Yes, he allegedly died on Halloween, like Cheri Jo Bates of the faked Zodiac murders. Who else are we told died on Halloween? 1) Harry Houdini. Houdini's father was a Rabbi and Harry was a Freemason. Houdini's wife collected double indemnity on the insurance policy on his death. He was 52. Who else died at age 52? Alleged serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Grace Kelly. Wendell Willkie. Christopher Reeve. Shakespeare. Frank Zappa. Abbie Hoffman. 2) Ramon Novarro. Allegedly murdered in 1968. The story comes from Kenneth Anger, a CIA/Hollywood writer responsible for the most lurid fake stories. Novarro was supposed to be an ex-lover of Rudolph Valentino. An aging gay man killed by young male hustlers with “a black art deco dildo.” Right. See my paper on the Manson murders for more on Anger. 3) William Woodward, Jr. Alleged to have been killed accidentally by his wife in 1955, after a party with the Duchess of Windsor. He was heir to the Hanover Bank fortune, so there is zero possibility the given story is true. Truman Capote later implied that the wife had murdered her husband for his fortune, but this “murder of the century” was faked for other financial reasons. My guess is Woodward was either about to be indicted, and had to flee to South America; or— more likely—his bank was about to be raided by Manufacturers Trust (as would happen five years later), and he avoided the brunt of this raid by faking his death and moving most of the money into secret offshore accounts. -

Is Brad Pitt Ruining Your Love Life?
Is Brad Pitt Ruining Your Love Life? We know how effective media is in shaping our perspective and even our values, including our self-image. We know that being bombarded with images of beautiful men and women molds our vision of attractiveness. As we mature, we know it’s fantasy, and that even Hollywood beauties don’t look that stunning without professional hair, make-up, wardrobe and lighting. By now, you’ve probably seen the Dove video called “Evolution.” It shows how an attractive woman morphs into a fabulous knockout through professional hair, make-up, lighting, and yes, even Photoshop. How do these unrealistic images affect your dating life? 1. They can influence your expectation of a man’s looks. Very few men, especially middle-aged men, look anything close to George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Colin Firth or Pearce Bronson. While we realize these men personify an unattainable ideal, some small part of many women want – and perhaps expect – their guys to look as yummy. 2. The Photoshopped images of pencil-thin people on magazine covers and in movies exacerbates women’s feelings of inadequacy. Actresses like Cher, Teri Hatcher, Vanessa Williams, Julia Roberts, Helen Mirren, Glenn Close and Ellen Barkin are sparkling in their perfection — with personal trainers, private chefs, and perhaps a bit of nip-tuck. How many real-life middle-aged women do you see looking like that? Just as women have unrealistic expectations of a man’s looks, so, too, men have an idealized expectation that women should look like these air-brushed fantasy females. -
