  • Liner Notes: Aesthetics of Capitalism and Resistance in Contemporary
LINER NOTES: AESTHETICS OF CAPITALISM AND RESISTANCE IN CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE MUSIC A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Jillian Marshall December 2018 © 2018, Jillian Marshall LINER NOTES: AESTHETICS OF CAPITALISM AND RESISTANCE IN CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE MUSIC Jillian Marshall, Ph.D. Cornell University 2018 This dissertation hypothesizes that capitalism can be understood as an aesthetic through an examination and comparison of three music life worlds in contemporary Japan: traditional, popular, and underground. Through ethnographic fieldwork-based immersion in each musical world for nearly four years, the research presented here concludes that capitalism’s alienating aesthetic is naturally counteracted by aesthetics of community-based resistance, which blur and re-organize the generic boundaries typically associated with these three musics. By conceptualizing capitalism -- and socio-economics on whole – as an aesthetic, this dissertation ultimately claims an activist stance, showing by way of these rather dramatic case studies the self-destructive nature of capitalistic enterprise, and its effects on musical styles and performance, as well as community and identity in Japan and beyond. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Prior to undertaking doctoral studies in Musicology at Cornell in 2011, Jillian Marshall studied East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, where she graduated with double honors. Jillian has also studied with other institutions, notably Princeton University through the Princeton in Beijing Program (PiB, 2007), and Columbia University through the Kyoto Consortium of Japanese Studies at Doshisha University (KCJS, 2012). Her interest in the music of Japan was piqued during her initial two-year tenure in the country, when she worked as a middle school English teacher in a rural fishing village.

University of Nevada, Reno Partying with Hello Kitty: How Electronic Dance Music and Rave Culture are transforming, commercializing, and globalizing youth culture in the twenty-first century A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History By Geoff Scott Dr. Hugh Shapiro/Thesis Advisor May 2014 i Abstract This thesis will demonstrate how electronic dance music (EDM) has evolved from the musical underground during the second half of the twentieth century into the mainstream, commercial powerhouse it is now in the early twenty-first-century world. EDM at its core is a musical style characterized by the use of synthetic, electronic sounds. The combination of technological devices such as drum machines, repetitive bass lines, electronic builds and releases and inorganic noises in tandem with instrumental and vocal samples makes EDM an incredibly malleable style of dance music that has branched into a variety of forms over the course of its less than fifty year existence. Innovations in technology, like the tape reel, the Moog synthesizer, the vinyl mixer and the computer have led to new ways of contemplating and creating music. I argue that the innovative musical voices of late modernism and early postmodernism set the foundation for early EDM, who were not afraid to harness the new synthetic sounds at their disposal. Electronic dance music can trace its roots back to the repetitive, minimalist structures used since the 1960’s by postmodern composers such as Philip Glass and the electronic instrumentation of artists like Terry Riley and John Cage. Owing to its flexibility, EDM has also been re-contextualized in different cultures.

  • Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Interview – Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Originally published in Tone Deaf Magazine, 2016 [Lewis]: Hi Kyary. It’s great for us that you’re coming back to tour Australia again. Was there anything you missed on your last visit that you wanted to see? [Kyary]: Last time I was able to visit the zoo and the aquarium, so it was such a fulfilling trip. I enjoyed it very much. At the zoo, I was looking forward to seeing koalas but they were sleeping, so hopefully this time I can cuddle them. [Lewis]: In the last five years, I think you and just a few other Japanese artists such as Perfume and Yasutaka Nakata have changed pop music forever, not just in Japan but all over the world. There’s definitely a new generation of people from the USA, Europe, Brazil, even Australia making music who are inspired by your sound. How does it feel to have you work reflected back at you like this? I imagine it would be a strange eXperience? [Kyary]: It is very strange but I feel very happy at the same time. There is a lot of cool Japanese music and I’d love more fans overseas to know about it. [Lewis]: Most people will have found your music through music videos, which have become a central part of your work. Whenever I watch a new video of yours, at first, it’s just like a simple pop-music clip, but then it becomes more and more captivating. There’s always compleX symbolism, miXing the scary and strange with the cute and friendly.

News Release April 3, 2019 JTB Okinawa Corp. 112-1 Asahimachi, Naha, Okinawa 900-0029, TEL: 098-861-1427 (main) Many events will take place in May-June to kick start the hot summer! JTB Okinawa launches “Okinawa E-motion” ~ A new tourism campaign produced by JTB in Okinawa ~ JTB Okinawa Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Naha City, Okinawa; President & CEO: Kenji Sugimoto; hereinafter “JTB Okinawa”), WONDER RYUKYU Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ginowan, Okinawa; President: Kosuke Tsuruta; hereinafter “WONDER RYUKYU”) and ASOBISYSTEM Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yusuke Nakagawa; hereinafter, ASOBISYSTEM) created a new tourism campaign, Okinawa E-motion*1, to promote Okinawa tourism during the off season in May and June. Tourism to Okinawa tend to be concentrated during the spring break and the summer. There is a need to equalize the tourism by stimulating travel demand during the off season. The period from the end of Golden Week in early May until the rainy season in June is the off season which tourists avoid. However, this period has very few long rainy periods and is not too hot. It is not well known that this is actually the best season for tourism with plenty of bargain deals on trips. Therefore, we plan to stimulate travel demand by establishing this time of year as Event Month and the best season for Okinawa tourism. We will do this by consolidating various resort events, together with developing an “Okinawa E-motion” tourism promotion with the keyword and hashtag #FlyingSummer to do advance promotion for the beginning of the summer season in Japan.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu: More than a Japanese Lady Gaga A Profile of Harajuku’s Official “Kawaii Ambassador” By Allie Lewis, [email protected] for Advanced Composition, ETSU, December 2013 1 | P a g e My first exposure to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu began with her wacky music videos released on YouTube. I came upon an internet gif of the petite Japanese girl vomiting animated black birds from her mouth and was instantly intrigued. After a short investigation I was treated to a conglomeration of adorable weirdness. Her music videos became an instant hit among my artsy East Tennessee State University college friends as well, and I soon developed an obsession with the young, disgustingly cute, J-pop artist. I even went as far as to construct a costume of her “Fashion Monster” outfit to wear at one of our local anime conventions. In the late spring of 2013 Kyary began her KPP World Tour, with the closest showing to my hometown of East Tennessee being the Best Buy Theater at Times Square, New York. My friends and I did some financial calculations, and made the brash decision to purchase our tickets and attend that very New York concert. At Times Square, on a chilly Sunday Evening in May, we stood in line for the concert, admiring the cute pastel outfits and extravagant costumes of the fellow concert-attendees. One girl proudly wore her skirt constructed from snack bags, another displayed a hat shaped liked Japanese pudding on her head. It was like a contest of eccentricity. To our left, a group of fans performed a flash mob to her hit “Tsukema Tsukeru,”each dancer elaborately dressed and superbly choreographed.

Specifically, I look at two post-war generations in modern Japan and analyse their listening practices and interpretations of music encounters. To investigate this, a mixed-method approach is used based on focus group and individual interviews, questionnaires, participant observation and expert interviews with industry representatives – 100 study participants overall.

  • J-Pop and K-Pop Dance Music Videos
J-pop and K-pop Dance Music Videos: Japan in the Face of Hallyu A THESIS Presented to the University Honors Program California State University, Long Beach In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the University Honors Program Certificate Laura A. Tanimoto Summer 2017 ABSTRACT J-pop and K-pop Dance Music Videos: Japan in the Face of Hallyu By Laura A. Tanimoto Summer 2017 Since the turn of the millennia, the popularity of South Korean pop music has steadily grown and exploded worldwide. One reason may be attributed to global exposure through K-pop dance music videos. As an ambassador through the worldwide web, dance music videos are characterized by stunning visuals, advanced videography and editing, immaculate dance performance, and chic infusion of its respective country’s culture. In recent years, Japan’s dance music video voice has been weaker in contrast to South Korea. Despite Japan being an early pioneer of the music video genre itself, the country pauses in the face of international popularization. It is the purpose of this research to find the reasons why and suggest the steps Japan might take to be a stronger global competitor. If there is remediation, what are the ways in which both countries can continue to showcase each’s own unique pop culture through the dance music video medium? In particular, this thesis will observe and analyze how the film, culture, and dance elements in Japanese and Korean pop dance music videos communicate their image to the world and what each country has to offer. Topics on production value, mimetic dance, kawaii culture, Hallyu, and attention economy will be vital to this research.
