Box 58119 Santa Clara, CA 95052-8119 News Fact Sheet CONTACT: Cristina Gutierrez 415-591-4047 [email protected] Intel News at Game Developers Conference March 23, 2009: At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Intel Corporation announced broad additions to its Visual Adrenaline program, a comprehensive and worldwide offering dedicated to serving visual computing developers. First announced in August 2008, Visual Adrenaline provides tools, resources, information and marketing opportunities to game developers, artists and animators. Below is an overview of Intel’s news at the show. Developer Tools for Better Gaming – The Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers (GPA) is a new suite of software tools that help software and PC game developers analyze and optimize for performance on Intel® Integrated Graphics. Consisting of the System Analyzer, Frame Analyzer, and the Software Development Kit, the suite of tools provides in-depth application analysis and customization that help developers pinpoint performance bottlenecks and enable them to optimize games for Intel Integrated Graphics-based desktops and notebooks. GPA offers software tools that provide a holistic view of system and graphics performance for Intel-based systems. GPA supports Intel integrated graphics chipsets and processors, including the Intel® Core™ i7 Processor, with planned support for future Intel graphics and multicore-related products. GPA is free of charge to members of the Visual Adrenaline program and is available to non-members for $299 from the Intel® Business Exchange. 4. Wargaming the Middle East: the Evolution of Simulated Battlefields from Chequerboards to Virtual Worlds and Instrumented Artificial Cities
4. Wargaming the Middle East: The Evolution of Simulated Battlefields from Chequerboards to Virtual Worlds and Instrumented Artificial Cities Janina Schupp Abstract Shortly after the end of a tank combat during the Gulf War, a team of US Army historians, scientists, and engineers flew to Iraq to gather detailed data of the battle. The collected information was used to create an exact virtual simulation of the combat for training. The mapping capability – offered by the resulting simulation game 73 Easting – to visualize the battlefield from any position and point in time revolutionized military exercises. With ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, these digital training cartographies are now linked to real bodies and vehicles through digital and mobile technologies during live training in artificially constructed villages. This chapter analyses this evolution and critically investigates the growing ‘gamification’ ensuing in these representations of Middle Eastern battlefields. Keywords: Wargames, Middle East, interactive battlespace, live simulations In war the experienced soldier reacts in the same way as the human eye does in the dark: the pupil expands to admit what little light there is, discerning objects by degrees, and finally seeing them indistinctly. By contrast, the novice is plunged into the deepest night. […] It is immensely important that no soldier, whatever his rank, should wait for war to expose him to those aspects of active service that amaze and confuse him when he first comes across them. Without them this dissertation would never have been written. I knew almost nothing about video games before I started this and their patient explanations of things most obvious was greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank my advisor, Dr. Ruth Malone. In 2008, when I sat in my first graduate class, I was not sure if I even belonged. Dr. Malone encouraged me and helped me believe in myself as a person and as a scholar. She opened doors for me that I did not know even existed. Ruth has mentored me for the last eight years, and for this I am honored and grateful. I would also like to thank my dissertation committee, Dr. Ruth Malone (chair), Dr. Kit Chesla and Dr. Roberta Rehm. Their gentle and careful guidance has seen me safely through one of the most challenging journeys of my life. I would like to thank my qualifying exam committee, Dr. Christine Kennedy (chair), Dr. Ruth Malone, Dr. Roberta Rehm and Dr. Susan Kools. Through your expertise and direction this project was shaped into what it is today. I would also like to thank Dr. Lisa Bero and Dr. Donna Odierna. I joined their reasearch group for ten weeks and stayed five years. -

A representation of common ground for everyday scenarios is essential for these agents if they are to be effective collaborators and communicators. Effective collaborators can infer a partner's goals and predict future actions. Effective communicators can infer the meaning of utterances based on semantic context. This thesis introduces a computational cognitive model of common ground called a Plan Network. A Plan Network is a statistical model that provides representations of social roles, object affordances, and expected patterns of behavior and language. I describe a methodology for unsupervised learning of a Plan Network using a multiplayer video game, visualization of this network, and evaluation of the learned model with respect to human judgment of typical behavior. -
