This project follows the open source philosophy, and uses JAVA as development platform. Consequently, it is portable and can be used by anyone around the world. In this paper, we describe the design and architecture of a prototype for browsing 3D geospatial information. GeoViewer3D is a system that handles and displays worldwide satellite imagery in- cluding textures and elevation data. It has a modular architecture and an efficient 3D rendering system based on OpenSceneGraph. The system incorporates a disk cache to improve access to GIS data. The goal of this prototype is to join the gvSIG project as 3D information viewer. FINITENESS PROPERTIES FOR RELATIVES OF BRAIDED HIGMAN–THOMPSON GROUPS RACHEL SKIPPER AND XIAOLEI WU Abstract. We study the finiteness properties of the braided Higman–Thompson group bVd,r(H) with labels in H ≤ Bd, and bFd,r(H) and bTd,r(H) with labels in H ≤ P Bd where Bd is the braid group with d strings and P Bd is its pure braid subgroup. We show that for all d ≥ 2 and r ≥ 1, the group bVd,r(H) (resp. bTd,r(H) or bFd,r(H)) is of type Fn if and only if H is. Our result in particular confirms a recent conjecture of Aroca and Cumplido. Introduction The family of Thompson’s groups and the many groups in the extended Thompson family have long been studied for their many interesting properties. Thompson’s group F is the first example of a type F∞, torsion-free group with infinite cohomological dimension [BG84] while Thompson’s groups T and V provided the first examples of finitely presented simple groups. More recently the braided and labeled braided Higman–Thompson groups have garnered attention in part due their connections with big mapping class groups. The braided version of Thompson’s group V , which we refer to here as bV , was first intro- duced independently by Brin and Dehornoy [Bri07], [Deh06]. Brady, Burillo, Cleary, and Stein introduced braided F , or bF . The groups bV and bF were shown to be finitely presented in [Bro06] and [BBCS08], respectively, and this was extended to show that both of these groups + + are of type F∞ in [BFM 16]. -

Este trabalho enquadra-se numa perspectiva de poder introduzir o desenvolvimento de experiências virtuais com interacção háptica no ensino, estando definido como objectivo a concepção de um conjunto de metodologias que permitam criar este tipo de experiências de forma simples e rápida. Inicia-se assim o trabalho com uma revisão bibliográfica das áreas envolvidas, nomeadamente simulação por computador, computação gráfica, realidade virtual e interacção háptica. Seguidamente são investigadas e analisadas possíveis soluções actualmente existentes e passíveis de serem aplicadas. Dado que não se encontrou uma solução que satisfizesse as necessidades do problema, apresenta-se uma análise das tecnologias necessárias para conceber uma nova solução: motor gráfico, motor físico e dispositivo háptico. As duas primeiras tecnologias referidas são alvo de uma avaliação, que permite escolher, de entre um conjunto de opções, qual o motor gráfico e físico que melhor se adequa às necessidades. -

Pandžić # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Abstract Applications with intelligent conversational virtual humans, called Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs), seek to bring human-like abilities into machines and establish natural human-computer interaction. In this paper we discuss realization of ECA multimodal behaviors which include speech and nonverbal behaviors. We devise RealActor, an open-source, multi-platform animation system for real-time multimodal behavior realization for ECAs. The system employs a novel solution for synchronizing gestures and speech using neural networks. It also employs an adaptive face animation model based on Facial Action Coding System (FACS) to synthesize face expressions. Period of the internship: 06.01.2009 - 29. 03.2009 Department: Computation in Engineering Faculty of Civil Engineering Technique University of Munich Advisor on the project: Dr. Martin Ruess Computation in Engineering Faculty of Civil Engineering Technique University of Munich Project description Idea The main idea was to incorporate user interactivity with simulation models during runtime in order to get an immediate response to model changes, a concept known as Computational Steering. This requires an implementation of a single-sided communication concept (with Massage Passing Interface, version MPI2) for the communication between simulation and visualization (two independently running processes with their own memory). Simulation The simulation process simulates the behavior of a real physical system. More specifically, it simulates the vibration (dynamic response) from a harmonic/periodic loading on thin plates. This process permanently produces results, scalar simulation data in sequential time steps, which are the input for the visualization process. Typically this calculation is numerical expensive and time-consuming. For this purpose was used a C++ implemented Finite-Element software package for dynamic simulation by Dr.Martin Ruess and it wasn’t a task for implementation in this project. Visualization The visualization process is the second independent process responsible exclusively for the visualization of the results generated with the thin plate vibration simulator. -

Wargaming the Middle East: The Evolution of Simulated Battlefields from Chequerboards to Virtual Worlds and Instrumented Artificial Cities Janina Schupp Abstract Shortly after the end of a tank combat during the Gulf War, a team of US Army historians, scientists, and engineers flew to Iraq to gather detailed data of the battle. The collected information was used to create an exact virtual simulation of the combat for training. The mapping capability – offered by the resulting simulation game 73 Easting – to visualize the battlefield from any position and point in time revolutionized military exercises. With ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, these digital training cartographies are now linked to real bodies and vehicles through digital and mobile technologies during live training in artificially constructed villages. This chapter analyses this evolution and critically investigates the growing ‘gamification’ ensuing in these representations of Middle Eastern battlefields. Currently, web-based online gaming applications are predominately utilising Adobe Flash or Java Applets as their core technologies. These games are often casual, two- dimensional games and do not utilise the specialist graphics hardware which has proliferated across modern PCs and Consoles. Multi-user online game play in these titles is often either non-existent or extremely limited. Computer games applications which grace the current generation of consoles and personal computers are designed to utilise the increasingly impressive hardware power at their disposal. However, these are commonly distributed using a physical medium or deployed through custom, proprietary networking mechanisms and rely upon platform-specific networking APIs to facilitate multi-user online game play. In order to unify the concepts of these disparate styles of gaming, this paper presents two interconnected systems which are implemented using Java Web Start and JXTA P2P technologies, providing a platform-independent framework capable of deploying hardware accelerated cross-platform, cross-browser online-enabled Java games, as part of the Homura Project.
