Psalm 2 The Lord’s Reign ruins the rebellious and rescues the faithful Nov. 15, 2015 I like sitting in my front yard or resting on my front porch when I have a porch of any size. When I don’t, the yard does just fine. Right before we moved to Bloomfield a few weeks ago, in the fading sunlight of a fall afternoon, the rumble of a Harley Davidson V-Twin eased to a stop right in front of me. So here I am, enjoying the last hours of a pleasant afternoon at our Windsor apartment. Next thing I know, the biker asks, above the Harley's rumble, “Is there a liquor store around here?” I point down the street, to the east at a little strip mall. “Yeah, there's one in that strip mall, just past the Italian restaurant.” He said, “I just go past that green awning and it's right there?” “Yeah,” I said. “It's right there.” At that point, I noticed a cross on his bandanna. The bandanna was folded just so, and positioned on the man's head just right. The cross was clearly seen, burnt orange on a black background. So I asked him, “Are you a Christian?” “No,” he said. “Oh, OK, I saw the cross on your bandanna but, no offense, I didn't think you were.” To which he said, “Well, I'm a Christian, I'm just not practicing.” stand up When Andre started this sermon series in September, he made this statement early in his first sermon: “The question is not, ‘Are you pursuing a kingdom? But whose kingdom are you pursuing?’” I think the stranger looking for a liquor store thought he could pay lip service to one thing and practice another. -

1 When Your Enemies Are Too Many To Count Psalm 3 Introduction: 1) In life we should not be surprised when we are forced to fight, when we are faced with battles we cannot avoid. 2) One of life’s greatest disappointments and heartbreaks is to be in a foxhole, receiving enemy fire, only to feel a burning sharp pain in the back, to turn and see that someone you were certain was a friend, is actually the enemy who has just stabbed you in the back in cruel betrayal. 3) This no doubt is what David felt when he was betrayed by his own son, Absalom. (2 Sam. 15-18). 4) What should we do when all seems lost? Trust in the Lord and call out to Him in confidence that He will deliver us. I. Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -

Exegesis of the Psalms “Selah”
Notes ! 147 BIBLE STUDY METHODS: PSALMS The Psalms are emotional. At times, God speaks too, but most of what we read are man’s words directed toward heaven. All these words are completely inspired by God. Our issue is to determine how they function as God’s Word for us. The Psalms are not: • doctrinal teaching - No! • biblical commands on our behavior - No! • illustrations of biblical principles - No! They provide examples of how people expressed themselves to God (rightly or wrongly). They give us pause to think about (1) God, and (2) our relationships to God. They ask us to consider the “ways of God.” Exegesis of the Psalms Separate them by types. Understand their different forms and their different functions. The New Testament contains 287 Old Testament quotes. 116 are from Psalms. The 150 Psalms were written over a period of about 1000 years. Moses wrote Psalm 90 in 1400B.C. Ezra wrote Psalm 1 and Psalm 119 about 444 B.C. Our task is to view the Psalms through the lens of Salvation History. “Selah” The Psalms are poetry and songs. The music is lost to us. “Selah” was intended to signal a musical pause. It’s not necessary to read it out loud. It’s a signal to pause and meditate. Though the Psalms are different from each other, they all emphasize the spirit of the Law, not the letter. Do not use them to form doctrines, independent of New Testament writings. The Psalms are emotional poetry. They often exaggerate through the emotions of their writers. The language is picturesque. -

Seven Hebrew Words for Praise All expressions of praise have faith as their basis. When the Jews heard the words for praise they understood a lot more than we do today because they understood the meaning of it. YADAH – yaw-daw (Hands to God) The Hebrew word YADAH comes from two root words. YAD which means the open hand, direction, power. And AH which has reference to Jehovah. Together they are rendered Hands to God. It carries the meaning of absolute surrender as a child does to a parent – “pick me up, I’m all yours.” Scriptures: Genesis 29:35, 2 Chronicles 20:21, Psalm 42:9-11; 109:30, Isaiah 12:1 YADAH (3034)– to throw out hands; to worship with extended hands, Ps. 7:1, 9:1, 28:7, 33:2, 42:5, 44:8, 63:4, 100:4, 134:2, 141:2. The opposite is to wail, throw ones hands complaining. Our hands are an extension of our inward nature. Aggressiveness inside – hands hit people. It is an expression of a deep surrender to God and it is an extension of our hearts desiring to exalt Him. TOWDAH – toe-dah (Court of Law) TOWDAH (8426) – see thanksgiving. In the Old Testament, it translated as “Confession”. The New Testament translates it as “to say the same thing.” The word comes from Yadah and means to extend the hands. To declare openly, freely, unreservedly. Admit as real or true. The lifting of the hands signifies agreement. The ATTITUDE for TOWDAH is: I’m thanking God. I don’t care what it looks like. -

THE NEW REFORM TEMPLE OF BERLIN: CHRISTIAN MUSIC AND JEWISH IDENTITY DURING THE HASKALAH Samuel Teeple A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2018 Committee: Arne Spohr, Advisor Eftychia Papanikolaou © 2018 Samuel Teeple All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Arne Spohr, Advisor During the first decades of the nineteenth century, Israel Jacobson (1768-1828) created a radically new service that drew upon forms of worship most commonly associated with the Protestant faith. After finding inspiration as a student in the ideas of the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, Jacobson became committed to revitalizing and modernizing Judaism. Musically, Jacobson’s service was characterized by its use of songs modeled after Lutheran chorales that were sung by the congregation, organ accompaniment, choral singing, and the elimination of the traditional music of the synagogue, a custom that had developed over more than a millennium. The music of the service worked in conjunction with Protestant-style sermons, the use of both German and Hebrew, and the church- and salon-like environments in which Jacobson’s services were held. The music, liturgy, and ceremonial of this new mode of worship demonstrated an affinity with German Protestantism and bourgeois cultural values while also maintaining Judaism’s core beliefs and morals. In this thesis, I argue that Jacobson’s musical agenda enabled a new realization of German-Jewish identity among wealthy, acculturated Jews. Drawing upon contemporary reports, letters, musical collections, and similar sources, I place the music of Reform within its wider historical, political, and social context within the well-documented services at the Jacobstempel in Seesen and the New Reform Temple in Berlin. -
