We are delighted to be hosting the Blues here today, in what is a superb way to prepare for the tough, yet exciting, campaign ahead. With many big names in both line-ups today, I’m sure the action and entertainment will not disappoint. Our team have been working hard and committing long hours to training since they came together in November, and have the utmost desire to turn that hard work into success this season. In just two weeks the Hurricanes head to South Africa for what will be a tough start to the year, however, they are looking forward to tackling this challenge head on. Today, we are here to bring Super Rugby to one of our treasured regions, to not only celebrate the game of rugby, but also allow the fans to get up close and personal with the players. Playing in the Wairarapa is always a highlight for the Hurricanes franchise, and we are thrilled to be playing in Masterton this year following four successful years in Mangatainoka. Our connection to Hurricanes fans across the region is an important part of this team and we hope the Hurricanes will continue to inspire a passion for rugby within many generations to come. This event is not possible without the support and vision of the team at Tui. To Nick Rogers and his team, we thank you for the hours of work that go into planning today’s event. Our partnership with Tui is an important one and this game demonstrates how we can work together to deliver a memorable occasion for both the teams and fans. On behalf of the team, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors, the Blues. To Sir John Kirwan and your men, along with your supporters, we hope you enjoy the Masterton experience. A huge thank you must also go out to you, the fans, as it is your support that allows us to continue to bring our game back to grassroots. To be able to kick-off our campaign in the heart of Hurricanes territory is a special way to start the year. It gives the team a real boost to see their fans from across the region join on this paddock to embrace what we love; rugby and the Hurricanes. Enjoy the match! Brian Roche Hurricanes Chairman HURRICANES VS BLUES MASTERTON 2014 3 4 HURRICANES VS BLUES MASTERTON 2014 MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOSTS WELCOME Welcome to Memorial Park for this Super Rugby pre-season clash between the Hurricanes and the Blues. The Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union is thrilled to support what will surely be an exciting game of rugby and we are pleased to continue our long association with Tui, which like us has been an iconic Wairarapa brand for over 100 years. This is the fourth time the Hurricanes have played a pre-season game in our region – the three previous sold-out games were played at the Mangatainoka RFC – and it is further proof that grass roots rugby shows no signs of diminishing in heartland New Zealand. We wish Mark Hammett and his team all the best today and for rest of the 2014 Super Rugby Season. We also extend a warm welcome to our visitors, the Blues and hope you enjoy today’s unique experience. There is no other sport in New Zealand where you can see world champions and famous All Blacks kick a ball around in your own back yard – and that is largely thanks to the hard work and dedication of many people who have collectively joined forces to bring today’s big game to Masterton. There is over 300 years of combined history between the WBRU, Tui, Trust House and the WBS. Collectively we’ve supported rugby in the Wairarapa for decades and this year is no exception with a continued enthusiasm and commitment seen from all quarters. We thank these businesses for their ongoing support. We’d also like to say a big thanks to our Match Day Supporters: PGG Wrightson, Sharpes Stockfeed, Cable Price, Norwood Farm Machinary, More FM, Wairarapa News, Printcraft, Trust House and of course Tui and WBRU. Today is an opportunity for rugby fans and our next generation of players to see, touch, and hear their rugby heroes up close in the fl esh. It only happens like this a few times in our lives and it is the stuff memories are made of. Lastly we want to thank you – our supporters for your continued support of the Hurricanes and rugby in this region. • Forward Momentum
Forward momentum JIM TUCKER finds out what Taranaki rugby is doing to make more history: “It was the BBC - Brown, Briscoe and Carroll.” So began the front page story in the Taranaki Herald Sports Edition one Saturday in 1959. It was one of an endless string of puns the paper’s rugby writer used to chronicle extraordinary feats by Taranaki’s late-50s Ranfurly Shield holders. The monikers so playfully employed above – it could easily have been Burke, Boon and Cameron - are a distant memory for most of today’s generation. But they’re far from forgotten at Taranaki Football Rugby Union HQ in Yarrow Stadium. As the photograph of TRFU chief executive Mike Collins shows, that great team dominates one whole wall of the meeting room, and as the union gears up to repeat last year’s win in the ITM inter-provincial rugby competition, the names of Peter Burke, Ross Brown, Kevin Briscoe, Ralph Carroll and company resonate as never before. One reason is the current team already rivals the ‘59ers on at least one measure – the number of All Blacks in its ranks While Taranaki had six at various stages between 1957 and 1960, today’s team has five, with more in the offing. It also has eight Maori All Blacks, (including captain Charlie Ngatai, also an All Black), and two in the Junior All Blacks. Not that any of this is particularly at the forefront He says the academy managers, Willy Rickards of Mike Collins’ mind as he and his team prepare and Adam Haye, spotted Vaeno during some high for the ITM Cup season, which began with a school first fifteen games.
