Personalised Education at St Paul’s – Small class sizes, students known personally

St Paul’s Collegiate School is small enough to allow each student to be known personally and regarded as an integral part of the community. A vertical House system in the day and boarding school operates as an extended family unit during a student’s time at St Paul’s. Each House has its own unique character, and our Housemasters come to know and understand the student members of their House well.

TC030512SP04 MISS TUI 2012 hopeful Jade Peterson. 8693792AA Te Awamutu’s Jade Peterson has given herself a great chance of progressing further in her quest to win the prestigious Miss Tui 2012 title. The hunt is underway to find the Queen of all things Tui and Jade has thrown her hat into the ring with 120 other hopefuls and is well into the gruelling eight weeks of challenges — winning the latest round. Jade has used her ‘Tui smarts and disguise techniques’ to take top honours in this week’s Defend The Brewery Challenge, creating a video dressed up as a Tui gnome. The creativity of her clip caught the attention of the judges and has put her in with a good chance to making it as a finalist. The last challenge is One of the Boys, were the judges are looking for that something special from the Miss Tui hopefuls. Finalists will be announced on Monday, May 14 and those girls will have another two weekly challenges to complete before Muss Tui 2012 is announced on May 30. The woman who wins will be the one who can swing an axe, hook a fish, apply lipstick without a mirror and loves Tui more than her hair straightener. She has to have a great personality and a knack of drumming up support for her cam- paign. This is important, as votes from family, friends and fans will get her through to the finalist stage, and within sight of the prized crown. Not only will the winner receive a lifetime of adulation and the bragging rights of being a prestigious Tui Brewery Girl, she will also receive $2500 in cold, hard, cash and a year’s supply of Tui beer.

Children at Apakura Te Kakano were too busy to stop for morning tea when they got their first chance to play in their new sandpit. It’s not surprising really — the impressive $22,000 sandpit at the Te Wananga o Aotearoa Early Learning Centre provides a wonderful addition to their outdoor play area. Centre manager Hinemoa Pohatu says it has been a long time in the planning, but the children are loving the new facility. ‘‘Over the past four years we have had four different plans 8683190AA done — ranging up to $50,000 — and we just felt we couldn’t justify that much out of our capital budget. ‘‘But the last plan by Active Play was very different in style and came in considerably less, so we felt it was time to get this Te Pahu Pre-School is a community run pre-school project completed.’’ The result is an artistically with three fantastic fully qualifi ed teachers sculpted sandpit, created in aggregate concrete, that is on • Sessions available now for 2-6 years old two levels (each 5.2m diameter) • Morning sessions Monday to Thursday and utilises koru designs. It has a shade sail to go over it as well.’’ She say the old sandpit space is going to be transformed into an area for construction etc. ‘‘It will have a permanent roof put on, giving us more options APAKURA TE KAKANO’S Eva Phillips has fun digging in the new for play when the weather isn’t sandpit, while other children (rear) gravitate towards the water so good.’’ feature. Te Awamutu’s Kevin Archer is a strong contender for honours in the fourth round of five in this season’s New Zealand Enduro Championships in the King Country. It has been a mixed bag of results in the Yamaha-sponsored series to this stage. Wellington’s Rory Mead won the day at round one near Kawhia in February, while ’s Adam Reeves and Auckland’s Chris Power shared second spot. Whangamata’s Jason Davis won round two in Northland in March and Auckland’s Karl Power returned from injury to win round three near Whangamata earlier this month. It seems highly likely that a fresh face could top the leader board when racing concludes at Waimiha this Saturday afternoon. Consistency has ensured that riders such as Te Awamutu’s Kevin Archer, Hokianga

8684054AA brothers Mitchell and Damon Nield, Mokau’s Adrian Smith, Opotiki’s John O’Dea and Auckland’s Michael Skinner are also in conten- tion for the outright win this season. It will be interesting to see who copes best with the course at Waimiha, but the title may go down to the wire at the final round in Taupo (on July 21). Consistency will be the key and it may be that the eventual outright winner won’t even have a round win to their credit.
