Just as Brad Mehldau today has become the dominant 20.00 (8pm) influence on other jazz pianists, the same is true of Kurt Rosenwinkel as a guitarist who DKK 295 has countless imitators around the world. To understand the genesis of his world wide influence you can trace the story back to the beginning of the 90ties, where jazz legend WEDNESDAY Gary Burton (repeating what he did for Pat Metheny) invites Kurt Rosenwinkel to join his band even before Kurt finished his studies at Berklee College of Music. Subsequently Kurt Nov 03 also becomes part of Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop band and Joe Henderson’s band, but 20.00 (8pm) perhaps more importantly he is one of the central forces (along with Brad Mehldau, Mark DKK 295 Turner etc) in a jazz revolution that takes place in the New York City club called Small’s in the late 90ties. Kurt Rosenwinkel’s influence ranges wider than just the guitar, as he is also known as one of the greatest composers in jazz today. THE ACCLAIMED DANISH GUITARIST AND HIS STELLAR TRIO THURSDAY JAKOB BRO TRIO Nov 04 20.00 (8pm) Jakob Bro (guitar / DK), Anders Christensen (bass / DK), Jakob Høyer (drums / DK) DKK 295 The young guitarist Jakob Bro has not only made an impression on the FRIDAY Danish jazz scene; as part of the group led by legendary drummer Paul Motian, Bro also performs with many top American musicians. As Paul Nov 05 Motian said recently: “Jakob is really talented ... he did a nice record of his own 20.00 (8pm) and he sent it to me. It’s really nice; it’s really different.” Bro is also experiencing DKK 295 success in Denmark with the groups Bandapart and Beautiful Day. In 2003, he received the Danish Music Award as “New Name of the Year” for his work SATURDAY as composer and guitarist on the latter band’s debut recording Beautiful Day (Music Mecca 2002). In 2006 his status as one of the most interesting artists Nov 06 on the young Danish jazzscene was confirmed when his album Sidetracked 20.00 (8pm) (Loveland 2006) won in both the category Danish Jazz Release of the Year and DKK 295 Cross-over Release of the Year at the Danish Music Awards. He has played with almost everybody in jazz; Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Bill Evans, Ray Brown, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton etc. Over the years, Tom has also become a great band leader and he is now touring with his super quintet, among here the young promising pianist Danny Grissett, who recorded for Blue Note Records. The Tom Harrell Quintet will most definitely be an important event for at Montmartre. DEXTER GORDON FESTIVAL November 14-23 Concerts and Reminicenses When we talk about the European period of the legendary tenor Dexter Gordon in the 60’s and 70’s, we immediately think about the jazz club Jazzhus Montmartre. That was his home there. For this very special Dexter Gordon tribute festival, with the close collaboration of Maxine Gordon, famous Danish and American musicians will be part of this event. Some played with Dex already 45 years ago, as the very great drummer “Tootie” Heath for example, or George Cables who was Dexter’s choice of pianist when he returned to the US in 1976. Other and younger ones, as tenor Karsten Kristensen and Benjamin Koppel are directly related to his Dexter Gordon, 1964 Photo: Jan Persson immortal legacy over the decades. This Dexter Gordon festival will be, indirectly, another tribute to a very great pianist, Kenny Drew, who played a thousand times with Dexter at the time at Montmartre. Many wonderful piano players will part of this too, like Thomas Clausen or Olivier Antunes, who comes from Kenny’s style. This Danish Dexter Gordon festival is unique in the world and will stay, for sure, an immortal event for everybody. What an excitement! Joining Tootie on stage is the great pianist Thomas DKK 350 DKK 350 Clausen, who was discovered by Dex in 1969 and from then went on to play with Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Johnny Griffin etc. Later he formed a trio with the superb Mads Vinding, another Danish musical treasure and master of the bass. Anders Bergcrantz studied at Berklee in Boston for 2 years and has played with Dave Liebman and Adam Nussbaum. With a sweet sound and yet a punchy style, he is one of the top trumpet players today. Last but not least, Tomas Franck delivers the tenor sax tones deeply inspired by the style and the sound that made Dexter Gordon so special. DEXTER GORDON FESTIVAL – REMINISCENCES WEDNESDAY DEXTER GORDON: THE MAN Nov 17 15.30 (3.30pm) Maxine Gordon (host / US), Niels Lan Doky (host / DK), Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath (Guest of Honor / US) + friends and associates of Dexter Gordon FREE Join us at the Dexter Gordon Festival’s REMINISCENCES hosted by Maxine Gordon and Niels Lan Doky. Also invited are many of Dexter Gordon’s friends and associates in the Danish jazz, and the jazz expatriate community who used to hang out at the old Montmartre. The afternoon will be an event of reunion as we come together and reminisce on the legacy and life of ‘The Man’ Dexter Gordon. He bought his first saxophone at the age of 17 and he was immediately influenced by the one and only Ben Webster. But when he heard Dexter Gordon, that was it! It changed his whole life, and he was lucky enough to hear Dex play several times in the 70’s in Denmark. Today, Karsten is known to be one of the most significant Dexter Gordon experts in Denmark. On the Montmartre stage this evening Karsten Kristensen is joined by Olivier Antunes on piano, already well-established on the Danish jazz scene. Bardeleben and Bremer on drums and bass are the new young house rhythm team at Mont- martre anno 2010 like Riel and NHØP were in the 60’s to Dexter. This will be another great moment during this Dexter Gordon Festival. DEXTER GORDON FESTIVAL – PART 3 FRIDAY BENJAMIN KOPPEL Nov 19 20.00 (8pm) Benjamin Koppel (alto sax / DK), Olivier Antunes (piano / DK), Jonathan Bremer (bass / DK), Niclas Bardeleben (drums / DK) DKK 275 At the age of only 16, Benjamin Koppel played one of his first public perfor- mances at the Dexter Gordon Memorial in 1990 at Montmartre in Nørregade. Ever since then, Benjamin Koppel’s work as a professional musician has had a primary focus on jazz music, although always experimenting with and deve- loping the music. As a bandleader he has established a number of ensembles with very unique styles and sounds and all contributing to his musical creativity as a saxophone player and composer. During the last years he has been focusing on his international career, and as part of this we can thank him for bringing some of the most highly regarded artists from abroad to Copenhagen.
