State child deaths at their lowest recorded level RALEIGH (AP) North Carolina’s child death rate is at its lowest level ever recorded, according to a report released Wednesday, thanks in part to significant declines in motor vehicle fatalities and infant deaths. The state Child Fatality Task Force said that in 2010, the rate among North Carolina residents from birth to 17 years old was 58 deaths per 100,000 children, a drop of 14 per- cent since 2009 and 46 percent since 1991. If the 1991 rate had held, roughly 9,000 more children would have died last year, according to Karen McLeod, co- chairwoman of the task force. “We should recognize and build on the progress we’ve made,” she said, warning that budget cuts could imperil prenatal care for some North Carolina women and driver education for some teenagers. Motor vehicle wrecks remain the leading cause of deaths for children, but the number of fatalities continues to decline. The task force credits public policies like driver education, backseat safety belt laws and driver’s license process that requires teens to go through a series of steps before getting full driving privileges. “The future prosperity of our state depends on the health and well-being of our next generation,” said Elizabeth Hudgins, executive director of the task force in a state- ment. “This continued improvement in this basic indicator of child well-being shows the value of focused public poli- cies and sustained and strategic investments for improving outcomes for our children.” Along with a decline in motor vehicle deaths, the infant mortality rate also dropped from 2009 to 2010, driven by a sharp decline in the number of deaths among black chil- dren. The number of suicides also fell, from an unusually high figure of 35 in 2009 to 23 in 2010, which the task force says is more consistent with other years. The figures also show differences in child deaths based on geography. Children in urban areas are more likely to die in fires, while children in rural areas are more likely to drown.
