The Ed Palermo Big Band – The Adventures Of Zodd Zundgren (74:23, CD, Cuneiform Records, 2017) Das Grundkonzept kennt man bereits von der Vorgängerwerken, dennoch bleibt es erstaunlich, welche Kraft in einem ausgeklügelten Big Band-Sound stecken kann. Ed Palermo und seine Big Band vereinen auf „The Adventures Of Zodd Zundgren“ Neuinterpretationen der Musik von Frank Zappa und Todd Rundgren, beides Vorbilder aus Ed Palermo’s High School Tagen. Bei den Zappa-Kompositionen knöpfte man sich zum Teil jenes Songmaterial vor, das inhaltlich recht passend aus dessen Jazz Rock / Big Band Phase in den frühen bis Mid 70ern stammt, aber auch Songs aus anderen Zeiträumen des zappaesken Oeuvres von den späten 60er bis hinein in die 80ern steht der Big Band Sound durchaus gut zu Gesicht. Hinter demTodd Rundgren- Material steckt natürlich eine ganz andere, wesentlich rockmusikalische Grundlage. Hier erzeugen die Neuarrangements teils eine komplett andere Atmosphäre und stilistische Ausrichtung, als man dies von den Originalen kennt. Video laden Dennoch entsteht aus der Vermengung von Zappa und Rundgren kein inhomogener Mischmasch, sondern die 25 Tracks wirken nahezu wie aus einem Guss. Die Big Band aus dem Großraum New York und ihr Bandleader überzeugen mit spielerischer Finesse und Luftigkeit und trotz der dominierenden Jazz Rock / Big Band Grundausrichtung, verfügt die Musik bisweilen über einen gewissen lässigen Rockpunch. So stehen zwar die unzähligen Blasinstrumente von Trompete, Posaune bis Saxophon im Vordergrund, doch gelegentlich wird ein ordentlicher Shuffle eingestreut, swingt sich das große Orchester ganz galant durch das Songmaterial oder ein knackiger Solopart weiß zu gefallen. Zudem verfehlt der spezielle Zappa-Humor nicht seine Wirkung und mit dem ehemaligen Zappa-Mitstreiter Napoleon Murphy Brock als Gast kann man wiederum auf namhafte Unterstützung bauen. Big Band Jazz mal etwas anders oder wie meinte schon Zappa: „Jazz ist nicht tot, meine Damen und Herren, er riecht nur komisch“. Oh No! Not Jazz!!, is the band’s third project for Cuneiform, but this time Palermo is offering his own jazz vision along side Zappa’s music. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition, with Palermo’s talent-laden 18-piece orchestra digging into his originals, which stand up effectively next to Zappa’s ingenious songbook. With titles like “Let’s Reproduce,” “Nostalgia Revisited,” and “Prelude To An Insult,” Palermo’s compositions seem to be muscling in on Zappa’s wry, absurdist sensibility. But it’s more that Zappa shaped his sense of humor (i.e. bent his young mind) than his compositional vision, as Palermo’s charts swing fiercely and owe far more to Thad Jones and Mel Lewis than the Mothers of Invention. “There is a lot of humor, and I probably got a lot of that from Zappa,” Palermo notes, while also claiming his deep jazz roots. “When you hear me play saxophone my heroes are Phil Woods and Cannonball Adderley.” Palermo’s big band has been dedicated to Zappa’s music for more than two decades, and no ensemble has done more to focus attention on his tremendous body of work as a composer.
