The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. SIMMONS1 DST/NRF Centre of Excellence, FitzPatrick Institute, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch 7701, South Africa ABSTRACT.—The Papuan Harrier (Circus spilonotus spilothorax), currently classified as a subspecies of the Eastern Marsh-Harrier (C. spilonotus), is endemic to the island of New Guinea and may be in need of conservation attention because of threats from grassland burning. I here detail the discovery of the first known nests in lowland Papua New Guinea and provide egg dimensions and prey data. Both nests were initiated in early April, in damp rank grassland, and contained three small chicks in mid-May. The only egg measurements, combined with one previously published record, suggest large egg volume and concomitant large female body size (estimated to be ca. 890 g). At this size, this may be the world’s largest harrier. Fire destroyed both nests within 5 wk of their discovery. An atypically slow foraging style and a preponderance of game birds and large rats (Rattus spp.) in the pellets and prey remains are consistent with large body size. Further studies of the bird’s ecology and breeding are needed for a comprehensive understanding of its conservation status and threats to its population. DGSR Fauna 1 Discovering Great Sandy Region Chapter 5 Animals of the Dunes The animals of Fraser Island and Cooloola are not readily apparent to the casual observer. The most obvious are birds and dingoes. Despite the obscurity of the fauna it presents an impressive range to those with the patience to explore and discover. This is because much of the fauna is lies buried in the sand or hidden by the great bulk of biomass or else it is either well camouflaged, very timid, or very small. However, it is not necessary to see animals in the wild to be attracted by them. Tens of thousands of anglers are used to searching out invisible targets as they seek the pelagic tailor during the winter months, and bream, whiting trevally and flathead at any time of the year. However, there are many other interesting animals in the sea around Fraser Island and Cooloola than those which delight the anglers. These mammals and reptiles are not the targets of anglers but the subject of much interest of those who are seeking to understand the environment and the many niches in and around Fraser Island and Cooloola. Although Fraser Island and Cooloola lack large populations of bigger terrestrial animals, they boast many rare and unusual species. One study in Cooloola alone identified over 300 species of ants, many new to science. In the aquatic environment the acidity of some of the peaty swamps has been so hostile that a specialized group of frogs known as "acid frogs" has evolved to fill this unique niche. -

Summary A pair of Powerful Owls Ninox strenua was studied at each of two sites near Melbourne, Victoria, for three years (1977-1979) and 15 years (1980-1994 inclusive) respectively, by diurnal and nocturnal observation. Home ranges were.mapped, nest sites characterised and breeding chronology and success monitored. General observations at these and eight other sites, of roosting, courting, nesting, parental and juvenile behaviour, fledgling mortality, hunting, interspecific conflicts, bathing, and camouflage posing, are presented. The regularly used parts of the home ranges of two pairs were each estimated as c. 300 ha, although for one pair this applied only to the breeding season. One pair used seven nest trees in 15 years, commonly two or three times each (range 1-4 times) over consecutive years before changing trees. Nest-switching may have been encouraged by human inspection of hollows. Nest entrances were 8-40 m (mean 22 m) above ground. The owls clearly preferred the larger and older trees (estimated 350-500+ years old), beside permanent creeks rather than seasonal streams, and in gullies or on sheltered aspects rather than ridges. Laying dates were spread over a month from late May, with a peak in mid June. The breeding cycle occupied three months from laying to fledging, of which the nestling period lasted 8-9 weeks. Breeding success was 1.4 young per pair per year and 94% nest success; early nests in gullies were more successful than late nests on slopes. -

Clever strategists: Australian Magpies vary mobbing strategies, not intensity, relative to diVerent species of predator A KoboroV, G Kaplan and LJ Rogers Centre for Neuroscience and Animal Behaviour, University of New England, Australia ABSTRACT Anti-predator behaviour of magpies was investigated, using five species of model predators, at times of raising oVspring. We predicted diVerences in mobbing strate- gies for each predator presented and also that raising juveniles would aVect intensity of the mobbing event. Fourteen permanent resident family groups were tested using 5 diVerent types of predator (avian and reptilian) known to be of varying degrees of risk to magpies and common in their habitat. In all, 210 trials were conducted (across three diVerent stages of juvenile development). We found that the stage of juvenile development did not alter mobbing behaviour significantly, but predator type did. Aerial strategies (such as swooping) were elicited by taxidermic models of raptors, whereas a taxidermic model of a monitor lizard was approached on the ground and a model snake was rarely approached. Swooping patterns also changed according to which of the three raptors was presented. Our results show that, in contrast to findings in other species, magpies vary mobbing strategy depending on the predator rather than varying mobbing intensity.
