Albert MOCQUerys IN VENEZUELA (1893–1894): A COMMERCIAL COLLECTOR OF PLANTS, BIRDS, AND INSECTS LAURENCE J. DORR,1 FRED W. STAUFFER,2 AND LEYDA RODRÍGUEZ3 Abstract. Albert Mocquerys, a commercial collector of natural history specimens, visited Venezuela from September 1893 through May 1894 and collected a wide range of organisms; plants, birds, insects, fishes, mammals, and fossil shells. Walter Rothschild evidently was his principal zoological patron and Emmanuel Drake del Castillo his botanical one. In Venezuela, Mocquerys established himself at Puerto Cabello and made three trips inland. The first was to localities near Barquisimeto; the second to the cave of the “guácharo” near Caripe; and the third was to the Venezuelan Andes near Mérida. Details concerning his collections and their present-day whereabouts are presented as is a gazetteer of localities associated with his collecting trips. Biographical data also clarify that Mocquerys was the third generation of a family of French dental surgeons, all of whom were accomplished naturalists with a special interest in entomology. Resumen. Albert Mocquerys, colector comercial de especímenes de historia natural (collector of natural history specimens), visitó Venezuela desde septiembre de 1893 hasta mayo de 1894 y colectó una amplia gama de organismos; plantas, aves, insectos, peces, mamíferos y conchas fósiles. Walter Rothschild era evidentemente su principal cliente zoológico y Emmanuel Drake del Castillo su correspondiente botánico. En Venezuela, Mocquerys se estableció en Puerto Cabello y realizó tres viajes al interior. El primero fue a localidades cerca de Barquisimeto; el segundo a la cueva del “guácharo” cerca de Caripe; y el tercero fue a los Andes venezolanos cerca de Mérida. -

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

The third chapter of the series about Rudolf Schlechter’s South-American orchids presents concise biographical information about those botanists and orchid collectors who were related to Schlechter and worked in north and northeastern Brazil, as well as in the three Guianas. As an introduction, a brief geographical outline is presented, dividing the northern territories in four zones: the Amazon basin, the Araguaia-Tocantins river basin, the Northeast region and the Guianas. It is followed by a short mention of the historical milestones in the history of orchids in these regions during the preceding centuries. (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Lithocolletinae Stainton, 1854) is described to ac- commodate two species formerly assigned to the genus Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822: Triberta helianthemella (Herrich- Schäffer, 1861) comb. nov. and T. cistifoliella (Groschke, 1944) comb. nov. Triberta cistifoliella bona sp. is restored from synonymy based on morphological characters. The new genus is biologically associated with the plant family Cistaceae of the order Malvales and is endemic to the Palaearctics. Our molecular analysis of eleven nuclear genes failed to unambiguously place Triberta in the lithocolletine phylogeny, but revealed that this genus is distinct from either clade Phyllonorycter + Cremastobombycia and Cameraria. Heft der DGaaE Nachrichten für 2005 hat verschiedene Schwerpunkte. Zuerst gewährt Ihnen Prof. KLAUSNITZER einen Einblick in die facettenreiche Geschichte der Entomologie in Dresden, unserem nächsten Tagungsort und berichtet über die dortigen entomologischen Aktivitäten. Aus den Arbeitskreisen wird von der Ende September letzten Jahres in Bonn durchgeführten ersten Tagung des AKs „Paläoentomologie" berichtet, bei welcher fossile Dipteren im Vordergrund standen. Unsere Paläoentomologen werden sich nach dem erfolgreichem Start in diesem Jahr zweimal treffen und zwar in Bonn und Dresden. Auch die Mitglieder unseres Arbeitskreises Medizinische Arachno- Entomologie trafen sich im Herbst letzten Jahres in Dresden und werden ihre nächste AMAE-Tagung 2005 in Stuttgart abhalten. Die Dresdner Tagung befasste sich vor allem mit Sand- und Stechmücken als Krankheitsüberträger in Mitteleuropa. Darüberhinaus wurde über Aktivitätsdichten von Ixodes ricinus sowie über die Verbreitung von Alpha- und Flaviviren berichtet. Schließlich stellt Prof. DATHE das neue Forschungsgebäude des Deutschen Entomologischen Instituts (DEI) am Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschafts- und Landnutzungsforschung (ZALF) in Müncheberg vor (s.a. Titelbild), in welchem sich auch die Geschäftsstelle der DGaaE befindet. Mehrere DGaaE-Mitglieder konnten der im August 2004 erfolgten, offiziellen Schlüsselübergabe beiwohnen. Wir beglückwünschen alle Kolleginnen, Kollegen und Mitarbeiter des DEI zum Bezug des neuen Hauses ganz herzlich ! Herr Dr. BATHON, dem ich für sein großes Engagement als Schriftleiter unse- rer Nachrichten außerordentlich dankbar bin, hat im vorliegenden Heft weitere interessante Informationen für Sie zusammengestellt. -

The scientist as historian BASTOS, Francisco Inácio; SÁ, Magali Romero. The scientist as historian: Paulo Vanzolini and the origins of zoology in Brazil. História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, v.18, n.4, out.-dez. 2011, p.1021-1038. Abstract The Brazilian Paulo Vanzolini is one of the leading herpetologists worldwide. The scientist as historian: Besides his publications as a zoologist and his activities as a former museum Paulo Vanzolini and the curator and policymaker, Vanzolini pursued a long-life career as a musician origins of zoology in and contributed to many different fields such as biostatistics, Brazil biogeography and the history of science. The paper analyzes his historical contributions to a key chapter of science in Southern O cientista como historiador: America, the legacy of the so-called traveler naturalists. The Dutch colonization of northeastern Brazil from 1630 to 1654 is described, with emphasis on the years 1636-1644, when the colony was under the administration of Johan-Maurits Prince of Nassau- Siegen (1604-1679). During his rule, the Company sent the geographer and astronomer Georg Marcgrave (1610-1644) and the physician Willem Piso (1611-1644) to Recife. Both explored northern Brazil and made rich botanical and zoological collections, which were published in Amsterdam in 1648, after Pisos’s return, under the title Historia naturalis Brasiliae; a second edition followed in 1658. In this work Piso mentions for the first time the orchid Vanilla in its current spelling. -

Le Abstract In 1908, Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH) acquired the collection of Lepidoptera built up by Herman Strecker (1836-1901) in Reading, Pennsylvania. Thought to have possessed, at some point, an estimated 200,000 Lepidoptera specimens, Strecker’s collection is both historically and scientifically important. Among the several families he collected and traded, Strecker had numerous specimens belonging to Castniidae. This Pantropical group is distributed in the Neotropics, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Neotropical Castniinae contains just over 30 genera and almost 90 species, while the Australian Castniinae has 1 genus and over 40 species, about 20 of which appear to be still unidentified.
