Abstract Race is a discursive-per formative construct. It is the by-product of the knowledge and power relations dynamics. Afro-American dissidents have been once shaped by these power relations and therefore have been subject to these race dynamics. Afro-American prison writings are counter-discourses and testimonies against the atrocities of “white” women during the Civil Rights movement era. Since their historical trauma of enslavement, Afro-American prison writers have left testimonies and diaries about the ordeal of their captivity. The corpus of prison writings documents an important historical period of activism and state repression. This paper investigates the notion of race as a discursive construct and analyses how such discourse perpetuates power relations underlying the oppressed and the oppressor, the dominant and the subaltern in Afro-American prison writings. It also analyses how Afro- American prisoners reveal and recover from the trauma they have undergone in the “white” ideological state apparatus, prison. -

'Prison': the Nation of Islam and the Politicization of African American
Journal of American Studies, (), , – © Cambridge University Press doi:./S First published online August “All America Is a Prison”: The Nation of Islam and the Politicization of African American Prisoners, – ZOE COLLEY This article examines the rise of the Nation of Islam (NOI) within America’s penal system during the late s and the s. In doing so, it explores the reasons for the NOI’s appeal among African American prisoners, its contribution to the politicization of those prisoners, the responses of penal, state and federal authorities to the proliferation of prison mosques, and the way in which imprisoned Black Muslims’ campaign for freedom of religious expression established the legal groundwork for the prisoners’ rights movement of the late s and the s. This research presents the prison as a locus of black protest and the African American prisoner as an important, but largely overlooked, actor within the black freedom struggle. It calls upon historians to recognize the importance of the prison as both a site and a symbol of black resistance during the post-World War II period. That’s why black prisoners become Muslims so fast when Elijah Muhammad’s teachings filter into their cages by way of other Muslim convicts. “The white man is the devil” is a perfect echo of that black convict’s lifelong experience. The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Malcolm X’s conversion to the Nation of Islam (NOI) while incarcerated in Leavenworth Prison, Kansas is part of the well-established narrative of his life. A number of biographies and studies of the man detail the awakening of his political consciousness while incarcerated and the importance of that experience in drawing him into the NOI. -

Essays Mobilizing for Mumia Abu-Jamal in Paris Kathleen Neal Cleaver* I. RETURNING TO THE CITY OF LIGHT The strike halted all railways, subways, and buses. Bumper-to- bumper traffic flooded the narrow streets of Paris, and walking became the fastest way to travel. The grey beauty of the Seine felt soothing that December morning as I walked by the river looking for number 19 Quai Bourbon, the law office of Roland Dumas. It was only Friday, but so much had happened that week, my head was spinning. It felt like the time I first met Dumas, back in the seventies. Eldridge Cleaver and I, among hundreds of other revolutionaries, lived clandestinely in Paris then, and Dumas was our lawyer. A deputy in the French Assembly at the time, he petitioned the government to legalize Eldridge's presence when he was a fugitive Black Panther leader facing imprisonment in the United States. * Visiting Assistant Professor of Law, Benjamin N. Black Panther Party: 1966-1982 Abstract The Black Panther party was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. From its beginnings as a local, community organization with a handful of members, it expanded into a national and international party. By 1980, however, the Black Panther party was once again mainly an Oakland-based organization, with no more than fifty active members. In 1982, the party came to an official end. Despite itselativ r ely short history, its modest membership, and its general eschewing of electoral politics, the Black Panther party was arguably the best known and most controversial of the black militant political organizations of the 1960s, with a legacy that continues to this day. -

BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY Reading and Theorizing James Baldwin: A Bibliographic Essay Conseula Francis College of Charleston, South Carolina Abstract Readers and critics alike, for the past sixty years, generally agree that Baldwin is a major African-American writer. What they do not agree on is why. Because of his artistic and intellectual complexity, Baldwin’s work resists easy categori- zation and Baldwin scholarship, consequently, spans the critical horizon. This essay provides an overview of the three major periods of Baldwin scholarship. 1963–73 is a period that begins with the publication of The Fire Next Time and sees Baldwin grace the cover of Time magazine. This period ends with Time declaring Baldwin too passé to publish an interview with him and with critics questioning his relevance. The second period, 1974–87, finds critics attempting to rehabilitate Baldwin’s reputation and work, especially as scholars begin to codify the African-American literary canon in anthologies and American universities. Finally, scholarship in the period after Baldwin’s death takes the opportunity to challenge common assumptions and silences surrounding Baldwin’s work. Armed with the methodologies of cultural studies and the critical insights of queer theory, critics set the stage for the current Baldwin renaissance. First, Baldwin was a widely reviewed, widely studied, prolific author. He published twenty-two full-length works in his lifetime, in addition to many essays, reviews, introductions, and interviews. Black gay Americans were subjected to intersecting forms of systemic and cultural oppression that were exceedingly hard to escape due to both the homophobia in Black spaces and the racism in gay spaces. Black gay activists and artists thus had to create their own avenues of expression where they and others could fully embrace what it meant to be Black and gay. This work utilizes a Black feminist framework to explore the roots of Black homophobia and how this type of bigotry was able to so deeply infiltrate Black activist spaces like the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. Black homophobia originated as a response to White supremacist domination of the Black body, and was able to spread through the community for generations through paths such as hypermasculinity, the Black church, and misogynoir. -

ABSTRACT Dig Yourself! The Ascent of Stokely Carmichael, Black Power, and the Death of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Daniel A. Dunn, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. In his role as chairman, Stokely Carmichael helped usher in a dramatic change for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a five-year old civil rights organization that had organized voting drives and schools for Black people throughout the south. While SNCC morphed into a more militant group to face the last half of the decade, Carmichael rode his popularity and the wave of Black Power around the world through conferences and speeches. In the end, SNCC had difficulty surviving due to internal conflicts and a lack of funding. Using a critical race lens, this study examines Carmichael’s leadership skills and the issues he and veteran SNCC members faced before eventually being expelled from the group. While SNCC would never recover, its efforts had a lasting impact on the south, Black people and the civil rights movement. Through a process of signification, Cleaver works to redefine key words and concepts that form a web of racialist and racist thinking called normative whiteness. By emptying key terms, like those of “life,” “liberty,” and “property,” Cleaver‟s text attempts to offer a new, less biased foundation on which a more inclusive and pluralistic American narrative can be written, a move that both makes his rhetoric significantly different from that of many contemporary resistance writers and positions him as an important link in a larger genealogy of resistance and African American literature. -

Fordham Road, Bronx, New York, NY 10458, USA; [email protected] Received: 20 May 2020; Accepted: 19 June 2020; Published: 22 June 2020 Abstract: This article examines the emergence of the Black Theology movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s in the context of the religiously diverse milieu of Black political movements during the same period. In particular, the theology of the Nation of Islam was widely understood by contemporary commentators as a major source of the confrontational rhetoric and tactics of the Black Power movement. Drawing upon the writings of the radical Black nationalist minister Albert B. Cleage, Jr., this article examines the importance of what Cleage termed the Nation of Islam’s “Black cultural mythology” in providing the possibility of a break in identification with white Christianity. In particular, it traces the influence of the Nation of Islam’s proclamation of God’s imminent apocalyptic destruction of white America on the theology of James H. Cone and Cleage. In doing so, this article argues for the importance of examining questions of racial and religious difference in American history alongside one another. It was precisely through creative appropriation of a non-Christian framework of biblical interpretation, rooted in faith in God’s complete identification with Black humanity and the consequent imminent judgment of white America, that early (Christian) Black Theologians were able to retain their Christian identity and sever its entanglement with white supremacy.
