Lindsay Saker Thursday 20 June 2019 NEWS YOU CAN USE FREE Father’s love saves son Vernon Baumann [email protected] The 13-year-old son of Marc and Juanita Verfaillie, Kyle, was diagnosed with Rassmunsen’s syndrome at the age of nine. This came as a huge shock to the family whose lives have never been the same since. Rassmusen’s Syndrome is an auto- immune disease in which the brain is literally consumed by the body’s immune system. Sadly this disease is fatal. And because only one in ten million people suffer from this syndrome, the pool of experts is relatively small. After his fi rst fi t Kyle’s condition deteriorated rapidly. A few months after the fi rst attack, Kyle was experiencing up to 200 seizures a day. MRI scans revealed that Kyle’s brain was busy shrinking. “His brain size diminished by 1.28cm,” his father told Bloemfontein Courant. Something drastic had to be done. Medication appeared to have no effect. There was only one option left: major brain surgery. Kyle’s fi rst operation, which lasted 13 hours, was on Valentine’s Day, 2017. Afterwards Kyle was very sick. He vomited violently and worst of all, the seizures didn’t stop. Marc alerted the doctor. A second session of surgery was scheduled in June of 2017. Unfortunately a complication arose when a major artery was severed by accident. A 4-hour operation turned into an epic 12-hour fi ght for survival. • Reflections from the Rector's Desk
Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey We are experiencing an ‘action-packed’ start to 2015! Best wishes to all members of The Grey Family for a successful, happy and healthy year. May all we do continue to be in the best interests of The Grey and those we serve. This is also our School Governing Body election year – and we will need to find some additional, suitable candidates amongst our Parent Body to fill a number of vacancies. Many thanks to those who have already expressed an interest and who have made themselves available. MR DIETER PAKENDORF – RECTOR : 1977 – 1992 Our esteemed former Rector passed away on Thursday 12 February. His funeral was held on Wednesday 18 February in the Lutheran Church, Cape Town City centre. Dieter’s incredible support and love for his school continued long after his retirement – and this with his good wife, Maureen, as ever, at his side. And so it is hugely fitting that his ashes be interred in the wall of the Memorial Quad alongside former Rectors of The Grey – this to be done in May, before our Friday Reunion Assembly, and in the presence of the School, members of the Family and all assembled Old Greys and Friends. The numerous tributes which have poured in from Old Greys all over the world bear ample testimony to the fact that he made a massive impact on a generation of Grey boys and that his masterful hand guided many to success. MATRIC RESULTS 2014 We were generally very happy with the academic performance of last year’s Matrics.

The school motto ‘Tria Juncta in Uno’ fittingly encapsulates this vision” – Bev McCarthy We wish Bev well. This is just the thing we have needed to raise the bar at the Grey Foundation. She will be totally dedicated to the task and we call upon all Old Greys to whole heartedly support her efforts.

  • CONFESSIONS of a SOWETO DRUG MULE: “I APOLOGIZE to the PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES I RUINED.” Everson Luhanga
Friday 19th February 2021, 0145 Real News. Scrolla.Africa CONFESSIONS OF A SOWETO DRUG MULE: “I APOLOGIZE TO THE PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES I RUINED.” Everson Luhanga Chasing money and the good life, Sizakele became a drug dealer in Soweto. Soon, she took her first trip to Brazil - to bring back drugs. It was a successful trip. She got the drugs, and was sitting in the plane at the airport in Sao Paulo looking forward to leaving for OR Tambo. But the cops were on to her. They arrested her on the plane. She then served five years in a Brazilian jail. This is her story: Sizakele’s father died when she was two, and she was raised by her mother. At 26, she became an orphan, turning to her uncle to care for her - and that’s when her life took a dark turn. Sizakele Maphupha’s dreams of becoming a doctor turned to dust when, instead of sending her back to school, he convinced her to become a drug mule. Speaking to Scrolla.Africa at her home in Mapetla Soweto, Sizekele said: “My uncle was supplying drugs to many people around Soweto and other parts of the province. He was making money. “He promised to buy me a Range Rover and I melted. I wanted that car whatever the cost. I joined him as a drug dealer.” She went around, supplying drugs to brothels, strip clubs and taverns. She was making money again and life was good. Then her uncle asked her to travel to Brazil. “There was more money to be made smuggling drugs from overseas,” she explained.
