PAGE 8 MARCH - APRIL 2004 HOBIE CLASS NEWS A Wish for Trish... HCA Shares John’s Loss

Trish Bauldry, my wife, my best friend and my sailing partner, passed away on March 9, 2004 in Los Angeles, California after a long and courageous battle with complications due to cancer. She started her journey to eternal peace surrounded by her family at her bedside. Trish was born August 31, 1958 in Pontiac, Michigan. Her family moved to the South Bay area of Los Angeles in 1960. Trish grew up in Redondo Beach, graduated from Redondo Union High School, UC Santa Barbara and the L.A. Institute of Fashion and Design. We were married in 1989 and she was currently residing in Clarkston, Michigan. Trish was the most courageous and incredible person that I’ve ever known. She has endured more pain and suffering in her life than that of 10 people. She always cherished her family and friends and always put them first before herself. Her undying love for family kept her going during the darkest of times. That fighting spirit kept her alive but eventually, her body could not. Her final battle was multiple organ failure. I surprised Trish when I made a trip to California this past Valentines Day. She was in pain and very uncomfortable after a major surgery. But when I walked through the door with her valentine, balloons and flowers in hand, she glowed with the brightest eyes and the biggest smile. Her doctors and family said no one person or medicine could ever do that - only you could. That memory will be with me forever. Trish loved the Hobie Way of Life whether going to weekend regattas, cross country trips to the Continentals or traveling around the globe to the Worlds. She was my crew when we won our first regatta on our Hobie 18. Even when she was not feeling well in the RV, she relished the time spent with our extended Hobie family knowing that they were close by. She always let me sail unconditionally, knowing that it gave me joy. Some of our closest and dearest friends have been made through Hobie sailing. When she couldn’t sail anymore, she was always there to lend a hand… helping Fleet 204 and Tom Korz out of the “weeds” at the Continentals, or going to West Marine and buying extra chain and anchors at the MEGA, or sitting behind the registration table at countless regattas, or entertaining in the evenings at the RV. She loved to cook and used us as guinea pigs for the recipes she saw on the Food Network. She especially loved her tenure as NAHCA Co-Treasurer from 2001 to 2003. She has touched the lives of so many and will be sorely missed. A “Wish for Trish” is her legacy. She was never comfortable with that title. Trish wanted to work with young people, teaching them about the gift of life – about being an organ donor. She never got the chance. Her wish... fill out the back of your driver’s license or other form to be an organ donor. That’s easy. But most families are in disagreement about organ donation after their loved one has passed. The hard part is talking to your family members NOW about your wishes as a donor. Let them know ahead of time what you want to do. We are humbly indebted to the family who made this decision. Trish received a life saving liver transplant in 1997. Help make Trish’s wish come true. For those who want to remember Trish, a donation can be made in her name to one (or both) of the following foundations. UCLA Foundation – Liver Donation UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation UCLA Medical Sciences Development Box 951780 10945 Le Conte Avenue Factor Building, Room 8-950 Los Angeles, CA 90095 Los Angeles, CA 90095-1780 Online donations: www.giving.ucla.edu/cancer By credit card: 310-206-0675

Thank you all for giving Trish your constant gifts of love, laughter, hope and compassion. We have been blessed by her presence and each of you in our life. My precious redhead may be gone but her spirit and memories will live with me forever. Gratefully, John For more about Trish’s life, or if you have a story or photos you’d like to share, please visit www.trishbauldry.com

HOBIE CLASS NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2004 PAGE 9 A Wish for Trish... HCA Shares John’s Loss

John Bauldy’s wife, Trish, our former NAHCA Treasurer, passed away recently. Kevin Wilson, of Fleet 204, organized a collection for a donation to a charity in memory of Trish Bauldry. Portions of emails/announcements from Jeff Rabidoux: John Bauldry, a great friend, and one of the core members of this fleet, lost his wife, Trish, after a long illness. She had been battling various illnesses for the last couple years, and had been in the hospital since a few days after Christmas, in the Los Angeles area. John appreciates all the prayers and thoughts you have sent. While this ending was something he knew would eventually come, he never expected it to arrive so soon. Your continued thoughts for John will be helpful over the coming days and months... it’s going to be very difficult, that is for sure. Paul Krutty and I [Jeff] came up with the following idea. Paul has created a [web] page that you can go to and write your words of condolence or encouragement for John. We have set up a single webpage (www.fleet276.com/condolences.htm) that you can go to and type in your message. This is a hidden page that no one can see, except for John. He accesses it by using a separate link that only he has access to. It will allow him to scan all of the messages without having to open a bunch of emails. It will be a great thing for him to refer to in the times when he needs a lift. I encourage all of you to go to the page and drop John a note. The power of friendships cannot be underestimated. I have spoken to John a number of times today, and he needs all the help he can get, as you can well understand. I have passed on to him the messages of support that people have passed through me, but this message board takes it to the next level. I think John will really enjoy reading through it. Thank you Paul for creating it. John requests that no flowers be sent, rather, please chose a charity to which donations can be made in Trish’s name. Jeff

HOBIE CLASS NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2004 PAGE 11 Hobie Cat Company to Supply Factory Boats for 2005 North American Championships

We are happy to announce that the Hobie Cat Company has offered to provide 36 new Hobie 16s for the 2005 H16 North Americans. Should this work out successfully, there is a strong possibility of having supplied boats for up to three years, more if the economics work out. The format is yet to be designed, but it will be a Round Robin, which will permit 70 teams to sail. We will keep two boats in reserve. The purpose of this message is to advise everyone that we are looking for a venue for this event. Our preference at this time is to have this initial event on the Atlantic or the Caribbean. We require a hotel/resort on the beach and the ability to use the beach for the Championship. Additionally we will require a Hobie Fleet or Division to act as the Host of the event and partner with HCA as the Organizing Authority. If you know of a Fleet/Division that has a venue and interest please contact Lori Mohney or Paul Ulibarri for a bid package. Ideally, we would make an announcement of the venue at the 2004 H16s in Syracuse, so time is a factor. Thank you, pu

Hobie Class Insurance Program Frequently Asked Questions

Who is covered by this policy? This policy provides bodily injury and property damage liability insurance for current members of the Hobie Class of North America (aka NAHCA). It provides coverage for these members when they are working at Hobie Class events including regattas, clinics and fun sails. Volunteers assisting at these events are covered as well.

Why are members of incorporated Fleets not covered by this policy? Fleets that have incorporated, including 501c(3) non-profits, are considered separate legal entities and their members cannot be included as a part of the Hobie Class policy when conducting activities for their Fleet. These members would, however, be covered by the policy if conducting activities with another non-incorporated Fleet.

What are “larger, non-incorporated Fleets” & why should they get their own insurance? Larger Fleets could potentially be considered a separate legal entity from the Hobie Class in a lawsuit. There is no specific definition of what constitutes a large Fleet, but generally Fleets with 50 or more members would be considered large. Also, this policy does not protect any funds a Fleet might have in a bank account, so Fleets with larger balances might want to get their own insurance to protect their assets.

How do I get an additional insured certificate? Contact Denece Herrera at Gowrie, Barden & Brett, the insurance broker for this policy, at 800-262-8911 Ext 161 or by email at [email protected] at least one month prior to your event.

Are there any safety requirements of the policy? Lifejackets must be worn on the water by participants at any youth events and clinics, and are strongly recommended for all other events. Although there is no minimum number of support boats specified by the policy, the Hobie Class requires a minimum of three support boats at any regatta, with five recommended. In general, safety is of paramount importance and event organizers should take whatever steps needed to ensure safety for participants.

PAGE 16 MARCH - APRIL 2004 HOBIE CLASS NEWS What does the Hobie Class do for you?

by Bob Merrick, CT, Hobie 16 sailor and Olympic Silver Medallist in Sydney, Australia

Without the Hobie Class Association, it is more than likely that Hobie sailing would have gone the way of the International 110, the Prindle 19, and the . It is highly probable that there would be no North American Championship or any Area Championships. There would be no national newsletter, no insurance for regattas, no race management programs, no guest expert programs, and no youth programs. All of these components are held together by the administrative structure of the association, which facilitates and promotes the fleet structure. And most importantly the success of the Hobie Way of Life is the product of the blood, sweat, and tears of the numerous volunteers who, for the most part, are also Hobie sailors. The Hobie Class is one of the largest classes worldwide, and without a strong overall structure, the class would dwindle into a few local fleets and many, many Hobies sitting under tarps in backyards all year. These are the rewards you reap: · Hobie Class provides Hobie sailors with a top-notch Class Association so that Hobie sailors can work together in a focused way to promote, sustain and build Hobie sailing in North America. · Hobie Class volunteers put together a fantastic newsletter and web site to keep class members informed about up coming regattas, past regattas and class issues. · We all know that sailing is more fun when you’re climbing the learning curve so the Hobie Class arranges for Guest Experts to put on free clinics at Hobie regattas all around the country. · If you’ve ever been to a regatta with a bad race committee, or better yet if you’ve ever attempted to run a race committee yourself, you can understand the value Hobie Class brings to the class with its race management programs. · To help make the racing more fun the Hobie Class helps regatta organizers by providing standard race instructions written by Hobie sailors. This may sound like a simple thing but without an efficient class association that has the support of its sailors these things would never get done. · At Hobie Area and Continental Championships the Hobie Class provides an additional level of support to make sure that these regattas are the highlight of your sailing season. · Part of the Hobie Class’s purpose is to ensure that Hobie sailing is enjoyed for decades to come. For that reason the Hobie Class is leveraging its resources to promote youth to sail Hobies. · The Hobie Class is looking out for your interests by sending volunteers to US Sailing and ISAF meetings, where important policy decisions are made for the sport of sailing. You have a voice at these meetings without spending your own valuable vacation time. · The Hobie Class is the glue that holds Hobie sailors together. It’s true there is strength in numbers but only if there is a unifying force to hold it all together. The Hobie Class is our unifying force in North America. There are plenty of classes out there that either never got off the ground or cease to exist due to the lack of a strong class association. Thankfully the Hobie Class does not fall into this category. · With a successful class association the rest of the pieces come together sometimes so smoothly that they are not even noticed.

HOBIE CLASS NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2004 PAGE 19 WOMEN ON THE WATER CLINICS 2004 W.O.W. Attention all women sailors!!!! This year, as the Hobie Class Association Women’s Representative, I am launching a new program called Women on the Water Clinics or W.O.W. This is what the clinics are about. I am asking all Divisions to consider designating one regatta (Hobie class sanctioned event) this season to a W.O.W. clinic. This means offering one of your best sailors, preferably a woman, to instruct a clinic before the regatta specifically for women racers. It’s our hope that a brief clinic might help those women who are unsure about participating in a regatta and need a “push.” Or maybe some women just need some instruction in racing rules, tactics, or how to sail. This could be an opportunity for women to develop the confidence in their sailing, therefore, lead to more participation in regattas (perhaps skipper a few!). Every participant will receive a FREE T-shirt (they are awesome!) and a Hobie U book, all compliments of the Hobie Class Association. It’s my hope that by offering these clinics, we will promote women in sailing and racing and give women an opportunity to develop skills to become effective and confident skippers and crew. So take a look at the schedule and pick a clinic close to you! You will also find contact information to get more details about each clinic. I will be updating this schedule as more clinics are organized. Keep checking the website (click the WHCRA link at nahca.org) for updates! See you on the start line! Half way through the first race we were postponed and sent to the beach to the sounds of island music. Day 6 Wednesday - Bobbing around Winds - what wind? After quite a few general recalls the first race was started but then we were sent in to the beach to wait until the wind picked up. Later on we were sent back out just to paddle in again at around dinner time. Luckily, Carl Beherns was playing Jimmy Buffett music as we paddled our boats back to the beach. Day 7 Thursday - How many times did you flip? Winds - gusts of 40+ (NICE as Rondo would say) Day 7 looked like it would be much better than day 6, and it turned out to be. During the last race, everyone that stayed out there, it seemed, flipped at least once with the strong gusts and huge waves. Not that anyone was taking an official count, but Ollie and Kelly Jason flipped eight times. Ed Nolen and Mike Kast seven times and Jim Glanden and Kelly Wood were not far behind with four. Some people decided it wasn’t fun anymore after the first or second time they flipped and headed to shore. Dave Raughley was injured when the boom hit him in the head, which caused a black eye and he didn’t sail for the rest of the day or on day 8. Day 8 - The last day! Winds - from okay to honkin’ Bobbing around comes to mind when we think of the first hour we were out there after the first race during the postponement. The sea breeze finally came in and we were off for two more exhilarating races, double trapped and some flipped. Mud on the top of the sail was vogue. The awards banquet that evening was a hoot. HOBIE CLASS NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2004 PAGE 29 DEADLINES: HELP US TO SERVE YOU

by Rich McVeigh and Mike Levesque

You may have noticed that some of your newsletters didn’t arrive on a regular basis this past year. There are a number of reasons for this, but the biggest delay was due to our editor not receiving articles on time. To improve the newsletter production time and get the newsletters to all of you on a more timely basis, we will be following the schedule below. In order to accomplish this goal and stay on schedule we need YOUR help. We absolutely need your articles, results, stories, pictures etc., but we need them submitted on a timely basis. We understand that everyone is volunteering their time, and it is generally a very low priority to write and submit a story after working all weekend to run an event. You have to realize that we are all volunteers too, and producing the newsletter is a hugely time consuming activity. For our part we are going to try to stick to this schedule and get the newsletter to you on a regular basis. We have been asked by the membership to make every effort to stick to a strict schedule over the upcoming year. If content deadlines are missed, this may result in information printed late or omitted completely. We hope that you will not allow that to happen! If you are running an event or are a member of a fleet that is hosting an event, it is up to YOU to let us know about it. Be sure to be on time with your NORs, articles, results and pictures! If you have suggestions on how we can improve the newsletter, or if you would like to volunteer to help with editing, layout, etc., please call or send us an email today: [email protected]!

A reminder: As a condition of being awarded a major event, THE DEADLINES all host fleets of major HCA-sanctioned events are As strongly voiced at the 2003 AGM, the members want REQUIRED to provide both NORs and content for the event. more regularity in terms of delivery. PAGE 30 MARCH - APRIL 2004 HOBIE CLASS NEWS From the Factory... Hobie 17 Production Reinstated and Exciting Hobie 16 and Tiger News

Hobie 17 Several months ago the Hobie Cat Company made an announcement that the Hobie 17 would no longer be produced at our Oceanside, California facility and a final few boats were to be manufactured at our Australia facility and then stopped there as well. At the time the decision was made many of us were reluctant to make it knowing that the Hobie 17 racing class would be effected by it. The Hobie 17 has been like a good friend over the years and saying goodbye was difficult. For those who have sailed it they understand that it is a very nice . In the last few months we have discussed this decision with many Hobie sailors and have received many emails and letters. We have been presented with some compelling comments and arguments to continue building this boat. One of the strongest arguments is the need of a single-hand class to remain in the Hobie Class Association of North America. Due to the overwhelming response from the sailors and our desire to support the Hobie Class Association we have decided to reinstate the Hobie 17 into production. The molds are being pulled back out and we are currently in the process of placing orders for mast extrusions, crossbars and other necessary components of the boat. Our anticipation is that we will have production of the Hobie 17 available by sometime in July of this year. Our hope is to have boats available prior to the Hobie 17 North American Championship in Monterey, California on July 19-23 though this will be a tall order due to our already busy production schedule. A limited supply may be available for the event.

Hobie Tiger As you may already know the Hobie Tiger is manufactured in France by our sister company Hobie Cat Europe. These boats are imported into the United States and distributed to our dealers. In the last few weeks our sales of the Hobie Tiger have been much stronger than anticipated. We are currently working with Hobie Cat France to move containers of boats forward to meet the demand. We are looking forward to several races in which the Hobie Tiger will compete. Hobie Tiger North American Championship, Monterey, California on July 19-23 Hobie Tiger World Championship, Santa Barbara, California March, 2005

Hobie 16 We are very excited about the Hobie 16 Worlds scheduled for Cancun, Mexico on May 4 –14, 2004. The current registrations for the event are exceeding many of the past Hobie 16 worlds attendance records. This is an event that should not be missed as our Mexican hosts have planned an event like no other. Trust me! This year we are also supplying Hobie 16’s to the Hobie Alter Cup and to the US Sailing Youth Multihull Championships being held in June and July. In July the ISAF Youth Worlds will be held on H-16’s in Poland. A team from the U.S. will represent us there. In September we are looking forward to the Hobie 16 North Americans in New York. It is a busy year for Hobie 16 Sailing.

HOBIE CLASS NEWS MARCH - APRIL 2004 PAGE 31 Membership Update from Liza Cleveland Greetings to all! I would like to introduce myself – I am the new Membership person for the Hobie Class Association. First and foremost I would like to thank Shirley Palmer for her many many (12!) years of extraordinary dedication to the position. Her help since I started has been wonderful. Our flurries of emails back and forth have given me at least a glimpse into what she’s done over the years. I hope I will be able to measure up at some point and also that you will forgive REGATTA me any mistakes as I learn the ropes. ATERIALS I have been sailing a Hobie 16 as a crew for the past three years, and I know M that many of you will agree with me that sailing a Hobie has to be one of the most AVAILABLE amazing experiences that can be had. It has become such an important part of my life that I realized I wanted to “give something back” for all the years of fun that were a result of the many people who volunteer so much of their time and For HCA SSIs, go to expertise to make all the regattas I go to well-run and super fun. When it’s “all happening” on a Hobie... you need to be confident in your equipment.

Hobie Tiger Continental Champions (2002 and 2003) Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier agree on one thing... they love racing! But, they can’t agree on which harness is best. Greg prefers the Hobie Convertible Harness, but Jacques wears the Hobie Automatic Harness. Greg likes the freedom of movement that the Hobie Convertible offers when worn without the shoulder straps. Jacques likes the clean design and snug fit of the Hobie Automatic.

CONVERTIBLE HARNESS “Converts” easily from a half harness to full harness with the addition of shoulder straps (included). The all around harness for both racers and recreational sailors where comfort, support and mobility are key. For recreational or racer sailors the half harness has enough back support to keep you comfortable on the tramp or the trap. Just add the shoulder straps for those long days out on the trapeze where extra back support is needed. Extra stiff back support, padded leg straps / shoulder straps, adjustable lumbar support, neoprene covers over buckles and a stainless spreader bar. It all adds up to keeping you comfortable and having fun on the water.

FULL “AUTO” HARNESS New spreader ratcheting feature allows easy adjustment of harness around hips. Ratchet strap system keeps the harness adjusted the way you like it while reducing the “loose strap ends” common with other harness designs. Clean design keeps you free from tangles. For those looking for added back support and comfort while on the trapeze. Great for spending lots of time on the wire. Crotchless design with neoprene leg straps, adjustable lumbar support, neoprene covers over side buckles. Reinforced patch on the seat. Comes with stainless spreader bar. cover.qxd 4/16/04 5:04 PM Page 4
