    THE CURSE OF THE KALAHARI: THE NORTH SYDNEY BEARS AND THE GHOSTS OF 1921-1922 ANDREW MOORE MACARTHUR INSTITUTE I With the publication of two important books, Power play edited by Geoff Lawrence and David Rowe,. and Brian Stoddart's Saturday After- noon Fever, it can no longer be said that Australian historians and sociologists are ignoring issues associated with the relationship between sport and capitalism or the social construction of sport.' This article also eschews the antiquarianism that hitherto has passed for the history of rugby league2 and by examining particular issues associated with the story of the Rugby League Football Club (RLFC) of North Sydney attempts to link class analysis with sport history. A related goal is a preliminary rescuing of significant aspects of working class culture. With their traditional emphasis on institutionalised trade union history and on what has happened to workers in the bosses' time, Australian labour historians, even with their recent commitment to 'social history', have paid scant 3 attention to the proletariat at play. The article is divided into three major sections. The first outlines the highlights of the North Sydney RLFC's long but fre- quently unmeritorious career and looks at issues connected with sporting performance that might explain why these highlights have been so few and far between. The second examines the class basis of rugby league. The third surveys the social history of North Sydney from the 1920s to the present and postulates that the down- fall of the North Sydney RLFC can be related to three related social forces - the progressive geographical dismantlement of North Sydney, its diminished sense of community identity, and the chang- ing balance of class forces in the district.

    from the publisher GREG T ROSS First of all let me welcome you to the Anzac Day/Winter edition of The Last Post. This is the magazine’s 16th issue and also its biggest yet. We start with forewords from Australian War Memorial Director Brendan Nelson and RSL National CEO Georgie Macris. Brendan has provided The Last Post’s foreword since Anzac Day 2014, so this is a birthday of sorts for the both of us. This is Georgie’s first foreword and we look forward to more from this modern and forward-thinking CEO. Sean Flynn, son of actor Sean Flynn, was a war photographer during the Vietnam War and friend of Tim Page. Tim himself is a photographer of some note, both in war and as a social commentary. Sean disappeared during the war, believed captured and killed by the Viet Cong. His camera, a Nikon Leica went missing too. The camera was recently found and Tim Page, who lived with Sean in Saigon, has written an amazing piece on the history of the camera, the war and his bonding friendship with Sean. In February I attended the 5th Annual Elder Abuse Conference in Sydney. Numerous representatives from sectors that deal with elders spoke on the matter over two days at Sofitel Wentworth. I interviewed conference ambassador Sue Pieters-Hawke on the floor of the conference area and Jane Caro by phone a few days later. Both Sue and Jane speak with me about the areas of potential and real examples of elder abuse and ways as a society we can improve the lot of those over a certain age who are or feel vulnerable.

The words piss and wind spring to mind. I was part of the crowd gathered in Pete’s lounge on Sunday ahead of our final home game of the year against Manly, when former Warrior Monty Betham stopped by to talk to us. His on again-off again crowd funding bid to buy a chunk of the club is on again, and I will tell you this for nothing, I’m in. Yes I bag the boys when I get depressed – which has been often, but on the other hand, it’s my team and I love them to bits, and come 2018 I will be back at Mt Smart cheering them on and hoping for better, and enjoying mixing with the other fans, Pommy Bastards excepted. Monty told us all, his plan has moved forward and he and some of those involved have gone so far as meeting with board chairman Jim Doyle, and new CEO Cameron George, and that his (our) lot will be having a look at the books during the week.
