IMAGE: DAPHNE ORAM, ONE OF THE CO-FOUNDERS OF THE BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP This Workshop is legendary and has had a significant impact on subsequent generations of musicians working across different musical genres, from beats and electronic music to mainstream pop and rock. It was set up in 1958 to create sound effects and music for radio and TV, including the landmark Doctor Who theme, and in these early years, prior to the development of synthesizers, the small team worked with tone generators and early magnetic tape technology to create a new vocabulary of sound. They were working at the same time as some of the key university based contemporary http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/intothemusic/that-dr-who-sound/5071184 Page 1 of 3 That Doctor Who Sound - Into The Music - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) 14/11/2013 15:41 electronic music studios on the continent and in the USA, but this small unit's primary focus was on underscoring radio and TV programs rather than creating new music compositions and as such, they pioneered the use of electronic music in the media. It's worth also noting that a significant number of women were employed in the Workshop, including Delia Derbyshire, famous for creating the sound of the Doctor Who theme, Daphne Oram who co-founded the Workshop, Glynis Jones and Elizabeth Parker. YouTube: Delia Derbyshire demonstrating how she worked Throughout its near forty year history, the Radiophonic Workshop created thousands of hours of music and sound effects - everything from children’s television programs, TV intermission signals, scoring nature documentaries, like Attenborough’s Life on Earth, to Doctor Who’s forerunner, the alien hunting, rocket-building, Professor Bernard Quatermass. Generations of kids all around the world heard these strange electronic sounds and the impact that this had, has taken some years to unfold, and often in the most interesting ways! That Dr Who Sound explores some of these interesting relationships and looks at the unusual group of talented women who created soundscapes and compositions in the Workshop; we also trace the mystery of Pink Floyd’s disappearing Doctor Who theme, http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/intothemusic/that-dr-who-sound/5071184 Page 2 of 3 That Doctor Who Sound - Into The Music - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) 14/11/2013 15:41 the talking walls of Bush House and how Genesis of the Daleks inadvertently assisted the birth of techno. This practice- based research explores the rich history of radio as an artistic medium and the relationship between the artist and technology, emphasising the role of the artist as a mediator between broadcast institutions and a listening public. It considers how radio art might be defined in relation to sound art, music and media art, mapping its shifting parameters in the digital era and prompting a consideration of how radio appears to be moving from a dispersed „live‟ event to one consumed „on demand‟ by a segmented audience across multiple platforms.

  • 2009 from the Daphne Oram Collection
http://daphneoram.org/collection/ Daphne Oram From the Daphne Oram Collection Because of WWII, the role of women in society changed dramatically in the years following. Women had proved themselves more than capable technicians, producers and broadcasters during men’s absence with the war effort. Daphne recalled, “In 1942 it was arranged for met to go to Royal College of Music – but because of War time regulations, I would have to agree to be a music teacher after leaving RCM – I didn’t want to be a ‘school ma’am’! My Father entered me for Electro-Therapist at King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill). I passed the exams, the uniform was ordered but I went against my Father because there was practically no music. Eventually I won my Father round and I went to the BBC instead.” Daphne Oram was employed at the BBC as a Junior Studio engineer and music balancer. She notes “As a Junior Programme Engineer, one of my jobs was to play the 78rpm gramophone records. With the help of a full score I had to change over from record to record, perfectly in time, so that a symphony, say on ten discs, was continuous. My other duties at the time , 1943-1944, was to assist my more senior colleagues with music balancing in the studios. I joined the BBC in October 1943. In November and December, while I was still 17, I assisted recitals by Eileen Joyce, Leon Gooseus, Isobel Baillie; and early in 1944, the London Philharmonic Orchestra...” In June 1944 Daphne also was working on the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, on standby with gramophone records synced up to the live music that could take over in case of a bombing raid.

  • 2017 the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
http://www.toppermost.co.uk/bbc-radiophonic-workshop/ The BBC Radiophonic Workshop October 16, 2017 The BBC Radiophonic Workshop (l to r): Desmond Briscoe, Dick Mills, Delia Derbyshire, Keith Salmon, Brian Hodgson Contributor: Duncan Harman “Established in 1958 to provide original sound treatment for Third Programme drama,” intones the dry and unassuming blurb on the back cover of the 1968 LP BBC Radiophonic Music, “we now provide a creative service for radio, television, local, regional and external broadcasting.” Which is one way of describing the BBC Radiophonic Workshop – and were we merely discussing the sound effects unit of a public service broadcaster, we could settle on an underwhelming summary, tidying away references to experimentalism and musique concrète and batshit crazy. The point being that the Workshop was so much more than a bunch of disparate technicians and composers tasked by Auntie Beeb to add a little pizazz to Play Of The Week; through the corridors of the BBC’s Maida Vale complex skulked some of the leading figures of mid-20th century sonic radicalism – Daphne Oram, Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson, Maddalena Fagandini. By definition their musical output was atmospheric – otherwise TV and radio producers wouldn’t have commissioned it – yet it was also weird, textured, nuanced, esoteric, pioneering, and – above all else – fascinating. Sound as bricolage, subverting boundaries between music and noise. And whilst the Workshop was an umbrella beneath which artists functioned primarily on an individual basis, there’s also a commonality in play; a framework through which spliced tape, ring modulators and early synths became states of mind as much as base instrumentation.

In all, more than two hundred different commitments a year are undertaken. The composition and realisation of the music and sound is done by a small number of specialised creative staff. Desmond Briscoe, the Workshop’s Organiser, writes: “On visiting the Radiophonic Workshop, many people are surprised to find that there are, in fact, four ‘Workshops’ where electronic music of various kinds is produced.

Desmond Briscoe (1925 – 2006) Harry Desmond Briscoe (21 June 1925 – 7 December 2006) was an English composer, sound engineer and studio manager. He was the co- founder and original manager of the pioneering BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Born in Birkenhead, and a drama studio manager for the BBC in the 1950s, Briscoe began to develop an interest in the use of electronic and electroacoustic techniques as a source of material for productions. Along with Daphne Oram, he worked on the BBC Radio production of Samuel Beckett’s All That Fall (Tx:13 January 1957), Giles Cooper's The Disagreeable Oyster (Tx:15 August 1957), and Frederick Bradnum's Private Dreams and Public Nightmares (Tx:7 October 1957). These works featured some of the earliest electronic effects used by the BBC and highlighted the need for a facility to provide such material. In 1958, Briscoe and Oram founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, with a remit to provide material for use in BBC radio and television programmes.
