REGIONAL MANAGERS REPORT

The year 2010 has seen a major change to the operation of Gippsland Power Football Club, with the completion of the Loy Yang B Changerooms and Bendigo Bank Centre Of Excellence Indoor Training Facility which has enable us to more effectively deliver all our programs. This has been made a reality through the generosity of International Power Loy Yang B, Bendigo Bank, AFL Victoria and a number of businesses throughout the Gippsland Region.

Power produced one of its finest seasons finishing sixth on the TAC Cup ladder and then eventually playing off in the TAC Cup Grand Final. The boys gave us the ride of a lifetime, coming from six goals behind in two of the lead up finals too eventually grab a Grand Final berth. To me as the Region Manager I was very proud of the players and the coaching staff on how they went about the year. The players especially did very well given the extra travel demands placed on them at the end of the season and during the finals.

Damian Carroll in his second season as a TAC Cup coach has achieved outstanding results with the team taking them to the TAC Cup Grand Final. I would like to thank him and his assistant‟s coaches Ashley Green, Wayne Butcher, Scott McDougal and Jim Dear for their dedication throughout the season.

Disappointingly, Damian Carroll after two very successful years has resigned his position as Gippsland Power Head Coach to take up a position as Development Coach with the and Coaching the Box Hill Hawks senior team, I have enjoyed working with Damian and seeing his talents as a Coach develop over that period. We were fortunate to gain someone of Damians stature to Coach Gippsland Power and his contribution to our programs has been greatly appreciated. We wish him, Kellie and Heath all the best in the future.

Season 2010 saw Gippsland Power have five players represent Vic. Country in the National AFL Under 18 Championships. I also like to take the opportunity to congratulate those players , , Tim Northe, Haydn Hector and Tomas Bugg.

One of the most important aspects of our elite player program is our Under 15 Schoolboys and Under 16 squads participating in the State Championships. Rob Reid (Under 16 Coach), Darren Thain and Scott McDougal (Under 15 Schoolboys Coaches) understand the importance of the pathway through to the Under 18‟s and have been outstanding in their efforts to develop the young player in their care.

Rob Reid Development Manager for East Gippsland and Gippsland Power Under 16 Coach continues to oversea Development within the East Gippsland Region. Rob has been in the Gippsland Power program for a number of years, successfully coaching our Under 15 Schoolboys team and assisting in several roles with Under 18 TAC Cup team.

To Laurie Plunkett (Football Manager and Life Member), I would like to thank Laurie for his dedication and total support to me over the past 16 years and especially over the past 24 months while the new facility has been getting built.

I would also like to thank our Medical team headed by Club Doctor Wayne Thompson, Physiotherapist Brendan McCarthy, and our team of trainers BobbieLee Blay, Darren Fox and Margaret Barrett-Poole for the professional way they carry out their duties.

To Brain Kinder (Match Day Team Manager), thank-you for your hard work and dedication.

Our Conditioning and Rehabilitation Coach Les Ponton who has maintained his high levels of professionalism and commitment we are indeed fortunate to have a person of his caliber as part of our coaching team.

Thanks also to our statisticians, Bryan & Margaret Mitchell, Bryan also runs our Player Welfare Program, and is our media liaison officer. Bryan is a total professional in all areas.

No club could be without people like Craig Backman (Rehab Coach), Nick Fawcett (Psychologist//Runner), Robbie Ross (Property Steward), Rob Brand and Len Ralph (Gate Keeper), Roger Smith (Scoreboard), Barbara Auldist (Timekeeper), Malcolm Neal (Interchange) and Peter Bates (Umpire‟s) and for the roles that they play on match days. Thank-you must go to Craig, Nick, Robbie, Malcolm, Rob, Len, Roger, Barbara, Paul, Peter and Robbie, and for your contribution to Gippsland Power.

I would also like to acknowledge the support from VCFL Area Manager Ben O‟Brien. The local leagues and their affiliated clubs in the regions, this is greatly appreciated.

A very special thank-you, to the parents and families of the players for their support and encouragement,of the boys. Our parents run aftermatch which is no doubt the best in the competition. A big thank-you must go to Margaret Plunkett for taking on the organization of this at each of our home games.

Gippsland Power is indebted to the TAC for their generous sponsorship of the VFL. Our Major Support Sponsor‟s, INTERNATIONAL POWER/MITSUI, LOY YANG B POWER STATION, BENDIGO BANK and COLIN WATSON MOTORS along with the many others who support us. This support is invaluable to the on-going success of the competition and it development programs. I thank them sincerely and trust that they will continue their involvement in years to come.

The support and cooperation offered to us by our landlords the Latrobe Shire and co-tenants the Morwell Football Club have had a significant contribution in the development of our players.

The direction, guidance and leadership offered by Peter Schwab, John Hook, Michael Daniher, Leon Harris, Stephen Smith and their support staff from AFL Victoria and AFL Victoria Development is always greatly appreciated, and the Gippsland Power Football Club thanks them for the many hours they all devote to the promotion and development of our great game.

In closing to those players and families who are leaving us this year, we hope you have enjoyed your time with us and wish you all the success in your future football.

COACHES REPORT 2010

2010 was certainly a memorable season for all players and staff of Gippsland Power. Reaching the grand final was certainly the highlight of the year and a great reward for the hard work put in by all. This seemed highly unlikely after we lost the first 4 matches of the season. The character that the players displayed throughout the season was a great trademark from the group and showed the spirit of the club from the past that we hope will continue into the future. The finals series in itself was a surreal experience where we managed to consistently find „something extra‟ as evidenced against the Northern Knights and to record amazing victories after coming from behind. From where the boys progressed from at the start of the season until the conclusion demonstrated the great development in which they have undertaken through 2010. Once again it was tough job getting the initial squad of 110 down to the final list of 39 players. The boys demonstrated dedication and commitment towards the pre-season program with the aim of making the final list. Thanks to Les Ponton for his work as fitness advisor in creating this program which prepared the boys for the high standard of TAC Cup competition. His work with the pre-season and also throughout the year with the assistance of a new addition in Craig Backman was greatly appreciated. Also thanks to our satellite coaches prior to Christmas who set up our season. To Wayne Butcher, Ben Soumilas, Chris Dallinger, Tim McAuliffe, Damien Kerr and Rod Connelly who prepared the boys well for the season ahead, we thank you for your commitment. As coach I would like to thank the Gippsland Power Football Club for giving me the chance to coach the club again for 2010. It was a privilege to be given the responsibility of coaching such a talented and dedicated group. I was very well supported by so many and it really is a fantastic environment in which to work in. We now have the best facilities in which to operate and I believe we also have the best staff in delivering a quality program to the boys. Thanks to the Regional Manager, Peter Francis, for all his hard work in preparing our club for this season and beyond. Peter puts in numerous hours above and beyond and I appreciate his support of my role over the past year. His legacy is carried over into the AFL, VFL and club football where we continue to see past players forge a career in the sport. It is a credit to him that in this year‟s AFL grand final that a quarter of the players involved had been through the Power system. From all the players, parents and staff involved in 2010, well done! Laurie Plunkett again performed his role for the club with great professionalism and dedication. As coach, I have found that I have little else to worry about besides the football areas, due to Laurie‟s well planned and organised manner in which the club functions. There is never confusion or anxiousness about upcoming events as Laurie is across all matters relating to the club. Congratulations on the work you have done in helping Gippsland Power be one of the most successful clubs in the country. To all of our staff around the club a huge thanks. I know there are so many jobs each week that are completed and many of our players would not even know that they take place, but it all helps us to be a successful environment for young players to develop. I hope that you have all enjoyed your role this season and that it has been a rewarding experience for you. The assistant coaches for 2010 should also be commended on their efforts throughout the year. Ashley Green (Backline), Wayne Butcher (Forwardline), Scot McDougal (Midfield) & Jim Dear (Ruck) did a wonderful job with the group and were well respected by the players. They showed great dedication and enthusiasm towards their roles. They gave the players belief and continued to work with them in bringing out their best football throughout the season. Scott was a new addition to the group and he fitted in very well in the box especially with his supply of lollies each week which was greatly appreciated! Max Papley was again on hand to provide a cool head and experience throughout each match. Brian Kinder and Robyn Francis performed the team manager‟s role with great enthusiasm and did a great job in putting up with the coach on the other end of phone. To our runners Robert Reid and Nick Fawcett, thanks also for your contribution and passion in undertaking this important role - and I apologise for all the messages particularly during finals on the bigger grounds! Nick was another new member to the club and worked as our psychologist throughout the season. We found his work and relationship with the players to be vital in our success this season. The boys have been very fortunate to have such great medical staff to support them in achieving their goals. Our injury rate was very low this year due to our great medical team. Our physiotherapist, Brendon McCarthy and doctor Wayne Thompson have demonstrated great dedication throughout the season to ensure that our players are given the best possible treatment. Also thanks to our head trainer, Bobbie Lee Blay who kept me up to date with all of the players physical welfare and she also co-ordinated the team of trainers that worked with Brendon and Wayne to provide the boys with all the care required. The trainers Darren Fox, Marg Barrett Poole and Kevin Curran all went about their business with great professionalism and enthusiasm. I also appreciate the work of our Dietician, Maria Clemens, who co-ordinates the boys for pre and post game fuelling as well as monitoring their fluid loss and tiredness ratings on match day. Again we had comprehensive stats sheets completed by Brian and Margaret Mitchell. Brian and Margaret do a wonderful job in compiling these stats each week and they give us vital information both during and after the match in which to review the boy‟s performances. Thanks also to Brian for his informative match day media reports which give a fantastic summary of the match and publicity for our players. Well done to Peter Bates who works hard in a range of duties for the club, especially during the week. Thanks to Robert Brand who helped as running and technique coach amongst other things, especially through the pre- season period. Thanks also to Malcolm Neal for his bus driving duties and support of the club; and to Robert Ross who undertakes any job he is given with great enthusiasm. No job is too small or too big for Rob and he helps game day run very smoothly. Off the field in my development role I would like to particularly thank Robert Reid (East Gippsland Development Manager) and Rod Connelly (Latrobe Region Auskick) for their assistance. There is lot of other work that Gippsland Power does away from our U18 squad and both Rob and Rod assist football within the region and ensure that our next generation of players come through. They complete school visits and clinics, coaching seminars and courses as well as attend to local clubs needs just to name a few. I was able to concentrate on the „coaching‟ because these guys made it so easy for me with the development work. Congratulations and thanks to all the parents of the boys. Again in 2010 I have found that you have been supportive of the program and have given the coaches the space to operate and communicate with the players. I understand that at times you have all had to sacrifice a lot to have your sons involved and I am sure that they will look back and be very appreciative of all your support. Finally, I would like to thank the players for their efforts throughout the year. There were a number of highlights and some terrific performances on the field for 2010. The players were very enthusiastic, dedicated and demonstrated great respect for each other, the club and environment. The improvement demonstrated throughout the season was considerable and this is the major aim of a development competition such as the TAC cup. You have proven that you can match it with the best! Well done and thanks to our players who are now departing from the program as top age players. A number of you have been involved for 4 years and we thank you for the effort and enthusiasm you have shown. Well done to Dyson Heppell (Captain) on being awarded the and his selection along with Jed Lamb in the TAC Cup „Team of the Year‟. Dyson also won Victorian Country‟s „MVP award‟ and was selected in the „All Australian U18 team‟ for 2010. Dyson was joined by Jed, Tim Northe, Tomas Bugg and Haydn Hector to represent Victoria at national level and I am sure they will cherish this experience forever. Victorian Country won the National Championships title in 2010 which is an outstanding effort. To our bottom age players who have the chance to come back next year, ensure that you continue to work hard on your game. Use the experiences of this season as a foundation to build upon for the next. We look forward with great excitement to the year ahead but we know that there is much work to do. “Go Power!” Damian Carroll

FOOTBALL VICTORIA UNDER 16 COUNTRY CARNIVAL BENDIGO Friday 9th April – Sunday 11th April 2010

SQUAD: Kane Allen, Ryan Buttner, Brodie Cameron, Josh Cashman,James Davidson, Jamie Ferguson, Tom Fusinato, Nicholas George, Ben Graham, Riley Hall, , James Huts, Darcy Irwin, Daniel Jackson, Shannen Lange, Kane Lewthwaite, Drew McGrath, Josh Martyn, Tim Membrey, Tom Muir, Matt Northe, Dermott Prout, Blake Rigby, Daniel Seri and Dylan Weir.

COACHING STAFF Rob Reid, Dean Hendrickse, Rod Connelly & Brian Kinder

The Gippsland Power under 16 team competed in the Victorian U/16 championships in Bendigo in April 2010. Training commenced in November with 65 players invited to participate in a modified program in conjunction the Powers under 18 squad. After the Christmas break the squad re-commenced training in late January. Combining both of the successful under 15 teams from 2009 to form the under 16 team was going to make decisions difficult as to the final make up of the team. The final 30 players all had trained well and performed well in the matches against Eastern & Dandenong. We felt that we had a very talented squad and were confident of a strong performance in Bendigo. After travelling up on Friday morning, we were scheduled to play the Murray Bushrangers in what would be a true test of the players. The boys fought extremely hard and were completely dominant in and excellent display of team football to run out convincing winners by 60 points Better players were Tim Membrey, Shannen Lange, Josh Cashman, Tom Muir, Daniel Jackson, Tom Fusinato, Dermott Prout, Matt Northe and Nick George. The game against Dandenong was expected to be the clash of the 2 best teams of 2010 and would turn out to be be the match of the carnival and eventually provide 17 of the final 25 players in the Vic Country team. We got off to a good start kicking the first goal of the game in the first 20 seconds of the match and held the lead at the first break. We were never headed for the game and despite 3 late goals from Dandenong, managed to hang on for a very deserving victory. Better players for the match were Shannen Lange, Josh Cashman, Riley Hall, Tom Muir, Kane Allen, Tim Membrey, Kane Lewthwaite, Daniel Jackson and Matt Northe.. We had 14 boys invited into the initial Victorian Country squad and Kane Allen, Josh Cashman, Tom Fusinato, Nicholas Graham, Riley Hall, Darcy Irwin, Daniel Jackson, Shannen Lange, Kane Lewthwaite, Drew McGrath, Tim Membrey, Tom Muir, Matt Northe and Dylan Weir. I would like to congratulate the following players on their selection in the Vic Country under 16 team for 2010 and wish them luck in the upcoming National Championships. Kaine Allen, Josh Cashman, Riley Hall, Shannen Lange, Tim Membrey, Tom Muir, and Dylan Weir.

I would like to thank Dean, Rod & Brian for there assistance during the program. Their enthusiasmat training was invaluable to me and made training enjoyable for the players. Peter, Damian and the entire Gippsland Power staff played key roles in the boys progress and I would also like to thank them for their efforts.

V LINE UNDER 15 CHAMPIONSHIPS

2010 saw the continued change in structure to our under 15 selection process for the V/Line under 15 championships conducted in Melbourne during the June school holidays. We selected who we considered the best 46 under 15 players from the entire region and then selected a “Division 1 and Division 2” teams. This allowed the more talented players to compete at the highest level against the best players from across the state. The VCFL provided financial assistance, along with Gippsland Power, towards the running of the two sides. This carnival provides the boys with their first experience of the talented player pathway, and was invaluable for those involved. All boys are to be congratulated on their efforts and the way that they conducted themselves, both in the lead up and during the carnival. In 2010 the division 1 team lost a close game on day 1 but finished the carnival with 2 terrific wins over very strong opposition. Coach Darren Thain did an outstanding job and is to be commended on his efforts throughout the program. The division 2 team, coached by Gippsland Power Assist Coach, Scott McDougal won 2 matches and lost a close contest to the eventual division 2 winner, Hampden.

AFL PLAYER SUPERCLINICS

In 2010 Gippsland Power staff have conducted 16 of these superclinics with players from Richmond, , Kangaroos, Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne and St.Kilda. This year more than 4800 students from 87 schools attended these clinics. In addition to this, Gippsland Power staff have held a number of school clinics across the region. East Gippsland has had an extra 29 clinics with 475 students attending. In Latrobe there have been 14 clinics with 495 students attending.

GIPPSLAND COACHES ASSOCIATION 2010

MEMBERSHIP There had been a change to the system of AFCA membership from this year. Now as a coach becomes accredited, the AFCA membership is paid as part of the level 1 course fees. This tidies up the system and means that the AFCA membership runs for the entire period of the coaches accreditation. Although many coaches choose to attend the level 1 coaches courses every 4 years to maintain their coaches accreditation, they are also able to reaccredit by contacting Rob Reid and completing the requirements. That is to have been an accredited coach and AFCA member for the past 4 years and meet the requirements of the Coaches Code of Conduct.

MAGAZINE The GCA is in its 20th year of producing its own local magazine for coaches. In 2010 two editions have been sent out to coaches. In addition, coaches received three editions of the Australian Football Coaches Association‟s “Coaches Update”. 2010 year saw the GCA spend over $6000 to purchase the “AFL – Coaching for the future by Robert Wylie.. This is a follow up to the coaching skills and drills manual by David Wheadon for each member which was purchased in 2009, Train Smart DVD and Skills & Drills Book purchased in 2007 and “The Best of Update” which was distributed in 2006 This is an excellent coaching resource and well received by all leagues and clubs who by now should be building en excellent Coaching Library for their coaches. We will continue to monitor all upcoming coaching resources and look forward to continuing this extremely valuable program From 2010, the GCA magazine is being distributed electronically via each league who will then send it out to all of the clubs. This will represent a substantial savings in printing and distribution costs which we will then be able to redirect into the continued purchase of coaching resources and the seminar program

COACHING SEMINARS In 2010 the Gippsland Coaches association continued our Coaching Seminar series. We conducted 2 seminars at Morwell and Traralgon. At Morwell Peter German from the was the guest speaker. In April we had former Melbourne and North Melbourne Champion and St Kilda Coach, Stan Alves as guest speaker at the . Gippsland Power Head coach, Damian Carroll spoke on coaching at the local level from his time as coach of the Bonbeach Football Club and Gary spoke on constructing your game plan. We will again offer this to each of the Gippsland Leagues who would like to host the event and the costs and guest speakers will again be provided by the GCA.

UNDER 15 SCHOOLBOYS 2010 - DIVISION 1

This year’s program began in November 2009 with an induction day held at Kernot Hall Morwell. Players and parents were introduced to the Gippsland Power Staff and the pre-season program was explained.

As was the case last year the boys were boken into two groups, Warragul and Sale. I looked after the Sale group and we had our first session on the 1st of December 2009 with a total of 50 players present. We had a further six sessions together before joining up with the with the Warragul group. We had another 9 sessions together during which time the squad was reduced to 46 players and the division one and two teams were named. Training was of a high standard and it was evident early that we had a very even group of boys making this years selection process a particularly difficult one.

We departed for the Championships on 28th of June 2010 and stayed at the YHA Victoria located in North Melbourne. The boys were fortunate to be addressed by Richmond player Andrew COLLINS. Andrew spoke to the boys about his journey to the AFL and what is required to make it at the elite level. I would like to thank Andrew for taking the time to come and speak with the boys.

GAME ONE V’s Goulburn Murray

Game one was played at Central Reserve Waverly in windy conditions. Power kicked against the wind in the first quarter and struggled to score into the strong breeze. At quarter time Gippsland trailed 1.1 to Murray 3.4. In the second quarter the boys fought back hard to lead 4.4 to Murray 3.6. The third term was all one way traffic and unfortunately it was Murray doing all the attacking. At three quarter time Gippsland trailed 4.4 to Murray 6.10. In the final term the boys fought hard but were unable to peg Murray back going down 5.10 to Murray 7.10. Better players were Wes RUSSELL, Aaron HEPPELL, Jesse GIARDINA, Alex CARR and Corey NICKELS. Goals, Jesse GIARDINA 3, Alex CARR 1, Nicholas TUCKETT 1.

GAME TWO V’s Geelong

Game two was again played at Central Reserve Waverly in extremely wet and windy conditions. We were playing against a strong Geelong outfit who had belted their opposition by 104 points on day one of the championships. Before the game a strong emphasis was placed on accountability and tackling pressure, which was lacking on day one of the championships. The boys came out firing and at the quarter time led 2.1 to Geelong 1.0. The second quarter was hard fought and ended with both teams locked at 2.2 a piece. The boys continued to battle strongly in the third quarter but were unable to score a goal. At three quarter time Gippsland trailed 2.4 to 3.2. In the final quarter both sides threw everything they had at the contest. Late in the quarter Gippsland still trailed by 5 points before Jesse GIARDINA slotted a major to put the team up by a point. The boys then defended strongly to win 3.4 to Geelong 3.3. Better players were Corey NICKELS, Alex CARR, Dylan ANDERSON, Nicholas TUCKETT and Nick DINSDALE. Goals, Jesse GIARDINA 2, Nick DINSDALE 1.

GAME THREE V’s Ovens & Murray

Game three was played at Harry Trott Oval Albert Park in windy conditions. From the first bounce the boys continued on from where they left off against Geelong playing hard accountable football. At half time the boys led 4.3 to Ovens 1.2. The boys finished the game strongly running out convincing winners. Final scores were 5.6 to Ovens 3.5. Better players Rohan HILEBRAND, Dylan ANDERSON, Corey NICKELS, Nicholas TUCKETT & Alex CARR. Goals, Mitch MUSTOE, Jack FARMER, Joshua KISS, Nicholas TUCKETT and Darcy BROCK.

I was pleased with the boy’s efforts and the improvement of the team during the championships was evident for all to see. Unfortunately it took a loss on day one of the championships for the boys to realise that they needed to play accountable, team orientated football to be successful at this level. The highlight of the championships was beating Geelong who went on to win the V/Line Cup. For all players that contributed throughout the championships I would like to thankyou for your efforts.

I would also like to thank Peter FRANCIS and all the Gippsland Power staff for their assistance and support throughout the program. It is a credit to Peter how smoothly the entire program ran. A big thankyou to my assistant Shaun MOONEY and special thankyou to Gippsland Power head coach Damian CARROLL, who not only attended every training session but did the running for the team during the championships. I would also like to thank Ashley BECK who was unable to play in the carnival due to injury but still travelled with the team and assisted on match day’s by taking notes.

I would again like to commend all the boys for their efforts during training and the championships. The boys have had their first taste of football at this level and must now strive to continue to improve to stay in the Gippsland Power program. I wish all the boys the very best for the future.

Gippsland Power Head Trainer Bobbie Lee Blay worked tirelessly for the entire week caring for both the teams and ensuring all boys were able to complete 3 consecutive days of football in very difficult conditions. Development Manager Rob Reid, thanks Steve Keating for his efforts as Team Manager and his assistance was invaluable. Gippsland Power Regional Manager, Peter Francis and Gippsland Power coach Damian Carroll attended and assisted in every training session throughout the training program. Special mention was made of the work of the parents, who travelled from all over Gippsland to give the boys the opportunity to participate in the program. The program was a huge success and I would also like to thank the Wellington Shire for the use of Rotary Reserve in Sale , and St Pauls AGS in Warragul for the use of their facilities. The boys were fantastic in their efforts to compete, and the experience that was gained from seeing and playing against the best players in Victoria, should set them up for terrific years at their home clubs. I would like to wish each boy well in his future, and look forward to watching their progress over the next few years.
