  • Houston Rockets Community Partners
2016 Dear Friends, I take great pride in the passion with which our players, coaches and staff strive to make a positive impact on the Houston community. As such, I am excited to present the 2015–2016 edition of the Rockets Community Report, a snapshot of this past season’s outreach efforts, and a representation of the Rockets legacy of giving back that spans nearly half a century. This is our story of an ongoing partnership with a community that has become so much a part of our Rockets family. And because we’re family, when torrential rains and floods hit Houston in April of this year, we were honored to answer Mayor Sylvester Turner’s call to help thousands of Houstonians get back on their feet by donating $500,000 to the Mayor’s Greater Houston Storm Relief Fund. We’re proud to highlight the ongoing programs that support education, youth fitness and wellness, children and families in crisis, and the many additional initiatives featured in the report. As we do each season, we’ve continued to help the underserved, support our military, and provide activities that uplift children battling illness. Through the Clutch City Foundation, we constantly seek ways to make an even greater impact, and this year we hosted the inaugural “Clutch City Cares for Kids” fundraising event, that raised more than $100,000 for two charities that support children - Casa de Esperanza and the Sunshine Kids Foundation. We’re grateful for our community partners who allow us to support their works of service. They inspire us.

It’s mid-January, in the middle of the Houston Rockets’ rollicking regular season where James Harden, Chris Paul & Co. have convinced the masses that they’re for real. Yet in this jam-packed space that has become Tilman Fertitta’s second home, where the 59-year-old Galveston native with a reported wealth of $4.3 billion paid a record $2.2 billion to buy the Rockets from Les Alexander in early September, you’d never know this was one of 82 games. Predicting Regular Season Results of NBA Teams Based on Regression Analysis of Common Basketball Statistics by Yuanhao (Stanley) Yang A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of honors in Statistics University of California at Berkeley May 2015 - 1 - UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY ABSTRACT Predicting Regular Season Results of NBA Teams Based on Regression Analysis of Common Basketball Statistics by Yuanhao (Stanley) Yang Advisor: Professor David Aldous | Department of Statistics Not long ago, if the Golden State Warriors had wanted to figure out how to best defend Pelicans star forward Anthony Davis, they might have sent a scout to a game or watched video clips. For their recent first-round playoff matchup, however, they had another way. As of this year, almost every NBA team has access to sophisticated tracking data that can tell them the position of the ball and every player on the court for every second of every game. The data made available by advanced technology and analytic tools is starting to revolutionize professional basketball, influencing everything from game strategy and player conditioning to how fans interact with the sport. Players, coaching staff, fans as well as sports analysts are trying to take advantage of the abundance of data to satisfy their different analytical needs. This thesis analyzes the correlation between individual player’s statistics and their team’s performance, and develops a prediction model that can be used to forecast regular season results of NBA teams based on common player statistics. Data from the past twenty seasons were collected via the Internet and analyzed using R.
