MALONE RISING THE RANKS NUGGETS HEAD COACHES ALL-TIME POSTSEASON WINS Nuggets Head Coach Michael Malone has led his team to another playoff series win and after COACH PLAYOFF WINS doing so, he continues to rise the all-time leaderboard for postseason coaching wins in franchise 1. 24 history. With their first-round win over Portland, Malone has now led his team to a series win in 2. 21 three straight seasons for the first time in franchise history. Malone currently ranks fourth all-time 3. 21 in Nuggets history with 20 career postseason victories only four behind first all-time. 4. Michael Malone 20

CLINCHED IN SIX The Nuggets returned to Portland on 6/3 in game six looking to end the series on the road. Michael Porter Jr. set the tone early, scoring 22 points (the most by a Nuggets player in any quarter in franchise history) connecting on six three pointers, tying an NBA postseason record for 3FG’s in a quarter. After trailing most the game, Denver used a late surge behind Nikola Jokić and Monte Morris in the fourth quarter to defeat the Trail Blazers 126-115, winning the series 4-2. It was a historic series win for Denver as they now have won a playoff series in three straight seasons for the first time in franchise history. Some other notes from the night: • Fourth playoff series win in the last three seasons, after winning a total of four in the last 32 years. • First time in Nuggets history they clinched a best of seven series on the road (excluding the bubble). • Held the Trail Blazers to just 14 points in the fourth quarter, the fourth fewest points in a fourth quarter in franchise playoff history. • Trailed by three going into the fourth quarter - in the last 62 NBA playoff games, teams were 6-56 when trailing entering the fourth quarter, with four of those wins belonging to the Nuggets.

HISTORIC GAME FIVE It was a night to remember at Ball Arena on 6/1 that saw a decisive game five go into two overtimes as the Nuggets prevailed 147-140. It was the 200th playoff game in Nuggets franchise history and the 147 points were the most points scored in a playoff game in franchise history and the most points scored in any game since 2008. A few other notes from the historic night: • In 22 all-time playoff games vs. the Trail Blazers, the Nuggets are 11-1 when scoring 114+ points (the one loss coming in the 4OT game in 2019). • Monte Morris posted a playoff career-high 28 points (4-9 3FG, 10-11 FT), three rebounds and five assists in a playoff career-high 41 minutes off the bench. o The second Nugget () in franchise history with 28+ points, 3+ rebounds and 5+ assists coming off the bench in a playoff game. Only the third player ( and ) in NBA playoff history with those numbers while also making 10+ FT’s. • Nikola Jokić registered a team-high 38 points (14-31 FG, 7-8 FT), 11 rebounds, nine assists and a playoff career-high tying four blocks in 46 minutes for his 25th career playoff double-double and third this series. o Jokić is the first player in NBA playoff history to put up 38+ points, 11+ rebounds, 9+ assists and 4+ blocks.

RAINING THREE’S IN PORTLAND Denver entered game three on the road in Portland looking to gain their first series advantage against the Trail Blazers. The Nuggets caught fire in the first half, going 12-20 from three and dished out 15 assists on 24 field goals to get a lead and didn’t look back. Austin Rivers caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points on 5-6 FG’s, and knocked down four threes in the quarter to propel Denver to a 2-1 series lead. Denver finished the game going 20-38 from three, marking the second most three pointers made in a playoff game in franchise history (22 – 8/17/20, vs. UTA).

NUGGETS EVEN SERIES 1-1 It felt like a must win moment for the Nuggets at Ball Arena on 5/24, as they looked to even the series with Portland 1-1. Denver continued their resilient ways and took down the Trail Blazers 128-109, snapping a three-game playoff losing streak and now head to Portland for two games. Some highlights from game two: • This is the fourth playoff series vs. Portland, with Denver opening each one with two home games. The teams have split those games in all four series, while the team winning game three went on to win each of the series. • The Nuggets outscored the Trail Blazers in all four quarters, something they had only done to their opponent in three games during the regular season. The 128 points for the Nuggets are the most by the franchise in a non-OT game since scoring 133 vs. the Trail Blazers on 4/18/86. • Denver scored 73 points in the first half, tying the franchise playoff record for most points in any half. • Nikola Jokić registered a team-high 38 points (15-20 FG, 2-4 3FG, 6-6 FT), eight rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes. This is Jokić’s second career playoff game with 38+ points, 8+ rebounds and 5+ assists. • Paul Millsap posted 15 points (5-8 FG, 5-6 FT), seven rebounds and three assists in just 15 minutes off the bench. Millsap is the first player in NBA playoff history with 15/7/3 in 15 minutes or less off the bench.

MATCHUP WITH PORTLAND The #3 seeded Nuggets meet the #6 seeded for the fourth time in postseason history with Denver looking to avenge their 4-3 second round series loss in 2019. Denver enters the playoffs in for third consecutive year and are the only team in the playoffs this season to have home court in three straight seasons. The Nuggets and Trail Blazers have seen each other in the playoffs a total of three times in franchise history prior to this season, with Portland holding a 2-1 lead in series victories. The Nuggets hold an overall record of 8-19. Looking back, Denver won their last series against Portland in 1986, winning 3-1 in the first round, advancing to the Western Conference semi-finals.

ROAD WARRIORS The Nuggets had another road back-to-back taking on on 5/13 and the Pistons on 5/14. Denver swept the two-game stretch winning both games comfortably. The win moved their road record to 22-13 on the season and the Nuggets now have the most victories (22) through 36 road games in franchise history and also tied the all-time road victories for a single season (22, 2006-07) doing so in five less road games than a normal 82 game season.

HOME COURT CLINCHED The Nuggets needed to win one game out of their remaining four to clinch home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They did just that on 5/11, defeating the 117-112 on the road, guaranteeing a top four seed. The Nuggets were led by Nikola Jokić and Michael Porter Jr. who both finished with 30 points, marking the fourth time this season that has occurred. With the victory, the Nuggets are the only team in the NBA to have home court advantage in the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

JUST KEEP PLUGGING ALONG Despite missing two starters and their sixth man due to injury, they Nuggets continue to plug along and collect W’s. They defeated the Clippers 110-104 on 5/1, jumping the Clippers to take over the three seed in the Western Conference and won the season series 2-1. It marked their ninth win in their last 10 games and dating back further, the Nuggets have won 21 of their last 28. Since Jamal Murray went down on 4/12, Denver has held their ground going 13-5 in that span and since the all-star break, Denver is 26-10, the best mark in the NBA.

FACU’S FOURTH QUARTER FACUNDO CAMPAZZO VS. NEW ORLEANS 4/28 Facundo Campazzo arguably had his best game in a Nuggets uniform vs. New Orleans on 4/28, helping FIRST-THIRD QUARTER FOURTH QUARTER Denver to a 114-112 win. Campazzo finished with a career-high 19 points (6-9 FG, 3-6 3FG, 4-4 FT), 10 4 points 15 points assists, a career-high six rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes for his first career double-double. Campazzo 7 assists 3 assists is the only rookie this year with 19+ points, 6+ rebounds, 10+ assists and 2+ steals. Facu’s fourth quarter 2 rebounds 4 rebounds was the story of his game, in the final quarter he registered 15 of the teams 27 points, had four rebounds, 2 steals 1 three assists and one block to propel the Nuggets to the win. 26 minutes 11 minutes

PORTER JR’S MOMENT Michael Porter Jr. has stepped up to the plate and answered everything the Nuggets have asked of him since Jamal Murray went down with a season-ending injury on 4/12. He posted a game-high 31 points (12-19 FG, 3-6 3FG), seven rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes vs. MEM on 4/26. It marked his first career game with 31+ points, 7+ rebounds and 2+ assists and he has scored 30+ points in back-to-back games for the second time in his career. In 16 games since 4/12, MPJ is averaging 24.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 3.9 3FG’s a game while shooting 56.6% from the field and 48.8% from three in 34.6 minutes.

CENTURY MARK The Nuggets had one of their best defensive games in their 120-96 win vs. MEM on 4/26. Denver held the Grizzlies to just 42% shooting from the field and gave up four made three-pointers in the game, a season-low allowed and the fewest allowed since 2/24/19 vs. the Clippers (3). The Nuggets have shown that when they allow 100 or fewer points, good things happen. The Nuggets are 14-1 this year when allowing under 100 points and have gone 62-4 in their last 66 games, also winning 20 of their last 21 giving up less than 100 points.

MPJ GOES OFF VS. Michael Porter Jr. continues to flourish for the Nuggets as he is stepping up in a time of need due to multiple injuries. His game was on full display vs. Houston on 4/24. He posted a career-high 39 points (13-21 FG, 8-12 3FG, 5-5 FT), six rebounds, two assists and three blocks in 36 minutes, becoming just the fourth player this season (Jokić, Antetokounmpo and Embiid) with 39+ points, 6+ rebounds, 2+ assists and 3+ blocks in game. Porter Jr. is the first player since (11/15/17) to post those numbers in the second year of their career and he became just the third Nugget in franchise history to make 7+ three-pointers in consecutive games (Smith and Gallinari).

CAREER-NIGHTS AT BALL ARENA Denver had an all-around team performance in the second night of a back-to-back to end a two-game losing skid, taking down the 129-116 on 4/24. The Nuggets were impressive on both ends of the floor but had the ball moving on the offensive end, finishing with 36 assists on 50 made field goals. The night as a highlighted by PJ Dozier, Michael Porter Jr and Facundo Campazzo reaching career marks in several categories. • Campazzo finished with a career-high 13 assists along with five points and two rebounds in 34 minutes. • PJ Dozier in his first career start registered a career-high 23 points (10-13 FG’s, 3-5 3FG’s) with seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 28 minutes. His 10 made field goals were also a career high. • Michael Porter Jr. posted a career-high 39 points (13-21 FG’s< 8-12 3FG’s) along with six rebounds, three blocks and two assists in 36 minutes.

4-0 IN THE WEEK POST MURRAY The Nuggets have rallied amongst each other when they’ve needed it the most after losing their star for the season to an ACL injury at GSW on 4/12. Since, Denver won four straight games over Miami, Houston, Memphis, and Portland keeping pace in the Western Conference playoff race. They have spread the love around on offense, highlighted by their road win against Portland on 4/21 where all five starters scored at least 12 points. It marked the 20th consecutive win where all five starters scored 10+ points.

EIGHT GAME WINNING STREAK The Nuggets have been rolling as of late, despite their loss to the Celtics on 4/11, Denver won 17 of their last 21 games overall and are moving up the standings in the Western Conference. Denver strung together eight straight wins from 3/26-4/9, the most consecutive wins in the Michael Malone era and their longest winning streak since 2013.

The Nuggets dished TEAM STREAK DATES out 33 assists in their 121-119 win vs. SAS on 4/9. Marking their 18th straight game with 25+ assists, 1. 26 12/25/18-2/25/19 the longest such streak in franchise history. Since the start of 1993-94, there have only been four longer 2. MPJ CATCHING FIRE Michael Porter Jr. recently played his 82nd career game, completing a “full season” for the first time in his young career. He has grown on the court tremendously in that span and has been showing out as of late. Denver was led by their dynamic duo of Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray as they combined for 52 points after halftime and Murray hit a corner three at the buzzer in regulation to send the game to overtime. The Blue Arrow finished with 34 points (12-20 FG, 6-7 3FG, 4-4 FT), two rebounds, five assists and a season-high tying four steals in 42 minutes. It was Murray’s first career game with 34+ points, 5+ assists and 4+ steals and his eighth game of the year with 30+ points. He scored 30+ points in six games all last season. Jokić posted 34 points (14-23 FG, 2-4 3FG), 15 rebounds, nine assists and two steals in 42 minutes for his 37th double-double of the year. It marked his first career game with 34+ points, 15+ rebounds, 9+ assists and 2+ steals. With both players scoring 34 points, it was the first-time multiple Nuggets scored 34+ points in the same game since 12/21/07 at Portland (Anthony and Iverson).

BARTON BALLIN Will Barton continues to do everything that is asked of him for his team, providing consistency and stability for the starting unit. Barton posted 23 points (8-15 FG, 2-8 3FG), four rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes vs. CHA on 3/17. Barton now has nine of his last 13 games scoring 16+ points and four out of 12 with 20+ points. He has also started to heat up from long distance, knocking down five threes’ in three of the last 12 games and continues to have the best year of his career shooting 37.8% from three-point range.

THE PROTECTOR Monte Morris continues to show night in and night out that he is one of the most valuable backup point guards in the entire NBA. Morris continues to protect the rock, as his turnovers are far and few between. Through 47 games this season, Morris has posted a total of 150 assists and only 34 turnovers in a total of 1196 minutes. His assist to ratio continues to be towards the top in the NBA.

ZERO REST NEEDED The Nuggets faced another quick turnaround as they headed to Chicago and Milwaukee for a back-to-back on 3/1 and 3/2. Denver first took down the Bulls 118-112 before heading to Milwaukee where they then defeated the Bucks by 31 to move five games over .500 on the season. Since 2018-19 no team in the NBA has been better than the Nuggets with 0 days’ rest, they hold a 23-7 (.766) record overall in that time frame and a 15-5 (.778) record on the road. MURRAY’S MONTH After playing through multiple minor injuries in the first couple months of the season, Jamal Murray has started to come into form when the Nuggets have needed him. The Blue Arrow has hit his stride in the month of February, as he has scored at least 20 points in nine straight games. In the month, he has tallied four games of 30 or more points, including a career-high 50-point performance at CLE on 2/19. Overall, in 12 games, Murray averaged 25.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists while shooting 51.4% from the field, 46.8% from three and 88.0% from the charity stripe in 35.6 minutes per game. His 25.8 are the highest he’s scored in a month in his career.

48 MINUTES – ONE TURNOVER Denver faced off against a division rival as they took on the Portland Trail Blazers on 2/23 at Ball Arena and made NBA history in the process. The Nuggets took down the Trail Blazers 111-106 behind Nikola Jokić’s 41 points, five rebounds and five assists as well as Jamal Murray who scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to propel the Nuggets to the win. It was the fourth time he has scored 19+ points in a fourth quarter in his career (three of which have come in the last week). However, the real story of the game was Denver’s ability to protect the ball. They finished with a total of one turnover, making it the first time in NBA history a team has had one or fewer turnovers in a game. They also dished out 25 assists on 41 made field goals, finishing with an assist to turnover ratio of 25:1

TAKING DOWN THE CHAMPS Denver capped their four game, weeklong homestand with a Sunday evening matchup against the reigning NBA champs on 2/14. The Nuggets played a balanced game, defeating the Lakers 122-105, snapping a two-game losing streak to the Lakers and evening the season series 1-1. The Nuggets attempted a franchise high 47 three-pointers and made 19, tying their season high for made three’s (seventh most in franchise history). They also held the Lakers to just six made three-pointers, tying a season-low for made threes by an opponent (6 at NYK, 1/10). Nikola Jokić was his normal self, finishing with 23 points (8-17 FG, 6-6 FT), 16 rebounds and 10 assists in 35 minutes for his sixth triple double of the season. He is now second in the NBA this season in total triple-doubles, trialing Luka Doncic by one. Facundo Campazzo also stepped up, he registered a career-high tying 15 points (4-8 FG, 3-6 3FG), four assists and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench. It was Campazzo’s fourth game this season with 10+ points, with the Nuggets going 4-0 in those games.

BACK ON TRACK The Nuggets were in high demand for a victory vs. Cleveland on 2/10, as they looked to snap their longest losing streak of the season (three games). Denver did just that, as six players had 12 or more points and they took down the Cavs 133-95, moving their record to 13-11. The blowout win was much needed and also historic as it was tied for the 10th largest margin of victory in Nuggets history and the second time since 2012, they’ve won by 38+ points. As well, Denver scored a season-high 133 points and allowed fewer than 100 points for the third time this season (3-0). They outscored Cleveland in all four quarters for the first time in a game since 2/23/20 (vs. MIN) and in their last 71 games Denver is 66-5 when holding an opponent under 100 points.

THREE POINT BARRAGE st Denver was red hot from behind the three-point line in their 128-117 win over the Utah HIGHEST 3FG% IN 1 HALF – NBA HISTORY (MIN. 15 ATTEMPTS) on 1/31. It was the main reason they scored a season-high 43 points in (1ST HALF) DEN LAC IND MIL quarter, shooting 8-8 from downtown to open the game. CAREER NIGHT FOR #15 The Joker wanted to put a stop to the Jazz’s 11 game win streak as Utah came into Denver on 1/31 and he did exactly that. The big man registered a career-high tying 47 points (17-26 FG, 4-4 3FG, 9-10 FT), 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes for his 20th double-double of the year. Jokić put up 22 points in the first quarter and 33 points in the first half, both career-highs in any single quarter or half. Jokic posted 32 points (13-29 FG’s), 20 rebounds, 10 assists and one block in 40 minutes. It was his first career playoff game with 32+ points, 20+ rebounds and 10+ assists, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain as the only three players in NBA playoff history with those numbers. • Jokic is the first Nugget in franchise history to post a 20/20 game in the playoffs. Jokić carried Denver down the stretch, scoring 31 points in the second half and overtime to propel his team to the win. He finished with 47 points (20-31 FG), 15 rebounds and eight assists in a season-high 45 minutes and his 20 made FG’s tied a career-high. 50 CAREER TRIPLE DOUBLES Nikola Jokić continues to etch is name in the NBA record books. On the second night of a back-to-back on 3/2 at Milwaukee, the big man notched his 50th career triple double, posting 37 points (15-23 FG’s), 11 assists, 10 rebounds and two steals in 36 minutes. Jokić joins Wilt Chamberlain as the only centers in NBA history to record 50+ triple doubles in a career. This season, Jokić ranks second in the NBA with 12 triple doubles and sits in ninth all-time trailing (57).

HISTORIC HALF AT TD GARDEN With five rotational players missing due to injury, Nikola Jokić did everything he could to give the Nuggets a chance on the road at BOS on 2/16. The big man was red hot from the jump and had 29 points (10-12 FG’s, 3-3 3FG’s, 8-8 FT’s) in the first half alone. Since 1997, it was the most points in a first half at TD Garden and the fourth most ever in any half the Celtics have allowed at home. He finished the game with 43 points (16-23 FG’s), six rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes. It was his third game with 40+ points (t-most in the NBA) and prior to this season, he had never recorded more than one 40+ point game in a season. Jokić joins Anthony, Fat Lever and Alex English as the only players in franchise history to be honored as Player of the Month. He averaged 27.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.80 steals while shooting .565 from the field, .381 from three-point range and .849 from the charity stripe in the month of January. In four games in December, he averaged 24.5 points, 13.5 assists, 11.5 rebounds and 1.50 steals, shooting .625 from the field and .400 from three. He helped lead the Nuggets to an 11-5 January, including a 7-2 road record. Jokić recorded five triple doubles, ranking second in the NBA, and had five games with 35+ points and 10+ rebounds. He also has posted a double-double in all 20 games, becoming the second player since 1976 to have a double-double in each of the first 20 games (). For the second time in his career, Jokić averaged at least 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting above 55.0% from the field in the month of January (min. 10 games) and is the only center since 1983 to record those numbers.

Jokić wins the award for the first time this season and has now earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors seven times in his career, tying him with Alex English for the second most in franchise history. Jokić, 25, averaged 29.0 points, 14.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.70 steals while shooting .522 from the field and .778 from the charity stripe. He helped lead the Nuggets to a 3-0 week, including a home win over the and back-to-back road wins over the Phoenix Suns on consecutive nights. The 3-0 week also moved Denver’s record over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE PLEASE NBA DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADERS Nikola Jokić has been all over the glass for the Denver this season and has produced double-doubles like PLAYER # OF DOUBLE-DOUBLES they are going out of style. Once again, the Joker led the way for the Nuggets finishing with 23 points (8-16 FG, 7-7 FT), 14 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in 36 minutes for his fifth triple-double of the year. He once again joins elite company: ➢ First player since Michael Jordan in 1989 to have 40+ points, 20+ rebounds, 20+ assists and 10+ steals in a two-game stretch (1/12 @BKN, 1/14 vs. GSW). ➢ First career game with 23+ points, 14+ rebounds, 10+ assists and 3+ steals. Only player in the NBA this season to put up those numbers.

JOKER AND OSCAR The Nuggets improved their record to 3-4 overall and 2-3 at Ball Arena with their 10th straight win over Minnesota, winning 123-116 on Tuesday 1/5. Denver used a balanced attack as all five Nuggets starters scored 10+ points for the second time this season (2-0) and they have now won each of their last 12 games when this has happened. Nikola Jokić continued his incredible play to begin the season as he registered a season-high 35 points (12-20 FG, 10-12 FT), a season-high tying 15 rebounds, six assists and three steals for his seventh double-double in as many games. It was Jokić’s first career game with 35+ points, 15+ rebounds, 6+ assists and 3+ steals. He is the first player to post those numbers in the NBA this season. Jokić joins as the only two players with 150+ points, 75+ rebounds and 75+ assists through the first seven games of the season.

➢ The Nuggets lost to the Nets 125-119 at home on 5/8 … Denver lost for the first time since 12/5/90 when scoring 104+ points through three quarters, winning their last 31 before the loss.

➢ Facundo Campazzo finished with a career-high tying 19 points (4-9 FG, 3-6 3FG), two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 34 minutes vs. BKN on 5/8… Campazzo has 3+ steals in three of his last four games and it was his eighth game with 3+ steals this season. Second behind Jokić (9) for the most on the team.

He was 2011-12 – 2012-13 Golden St. Warriors Lead Asst. Coach named the 16th head coach in Denver’s NBA franchise history on June 15, 2015 and 2010-11 New Orleans Hornets Lead Asst. Coach currently ranks third all-time amongst Nuggets head coaches with 266 wins. 2005-06 – 2009-10 Assistant Coach

2003-04 – 2004-05 Assistant Coach Last season saw Coach Malone lead the Nuggets to a 46-27 record in a COVID-19 2001-02 – 2002-03 New York Knicks Coaching Associate shortened season, as they captured their second Northwest Division title in as many 1999-00 – 2000-01 (NCAA I) Assistant Coach years. It marked the first time since 2008-09 and 2009-10 that the franchise repeated 1995-96 – 1997-98 Providence (NCAA I) Assistant Coach as division champions and just the fifth time in division history there was a repeat 1994-95 Oakland (NCAA II) Assistant Coach winner. Denver clinched the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs, making the postseason in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2012 and 2013.

In the Orlando Bubble, Malone helped lead the Nuggets to a 4-3 first round series victory over the , as they joined elite company, becoming the 12th team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a series. It also marked the first time since 1985 and 1986 that Denver secured a playoff series win in consecutive years. In the second round, the Nuggets overcame another 3-1 deficit, defeating the L.A. Clippers 4-3, becoming the first team in NBA history to come back from down 3-1 twice in a single postseason. Denver advanced to the Western Conference Finals for fourth time in franchise history and the first since 2009.

Since Malone has taken over prior to the 2015-16 season, the Nuggets have improved on their win total in four of five seasons with the only exception being the 2019-20 shortened season (+3 after 15-16, +7 after 16-17, +6 after 17-18 and +8 in 18-19).

Malone possesses over 23 years of coaching experience, 19 coming in the NBA with six different teams – New York, Cleveland, New Orleans, Golden State, Sacramento and Denver. The teams that Malone has been a member of the coaching staff have amassed 11 playoff appearances, including one NBA Finals showing and three conference finals appearances. Malone and his staff also were selected to coach Team LeBron at the 2019 NBA All-Star game in Charlotte, NC, defeating Team Giannis 178-164.

Before joining the Nuggets, Malone served as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings for two seasons. Before his time with the Kings, Malone was the lead assistant for the Golden State Warriors under from 2011-13 where they clinched a postseason berth in 2013, their first since 2007.

Prior to Golden State, Malone worked as the lead assistant to in New Orleans and helped the Hornets achieve a 46-36 record and a trip to the 2011 NBA Playoffs. The Hornets were the most improved defensive team in the NBA in 2011, allowing a league-best 8.7 fewer points per game than in the previous campaign (94.0 ppg, after giving up 102.7 ppg in 2009-10).

Malone also served as an assistant coach under Mike Brown for the Cleveland Cavaliers for five seasons, during which the Cavs posted a 272-138 (.663) record, the third-best mark in the NBA over that span. The Cavaliers made five consecutive playoff appearances during Malone’s time on the bench, reaching the NBA Finals in 2007 and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009. In 2008-09, the Cavs notched a franchise record and NBA-best 66 wins, with Malone and the rest of the team’s staff earning the right to coach the Eastern Conference All-Star squad. In 2009-10, the Cavaliers again captured the league’s best regular season record with 61 wins.

Malone’s NBA coaching career began with a four-season stint with the New York Knicks, where he originally joined ’s staff as a coaching associate in the summer of 2001, and was promoted to assistant coach in May 2003.

Before joining the NBA, Malone coached seven years in the college ranks, with his last stop coming at Manhattan College where he was the lead assistant. During the 1998-99 season Malone worked at the University of as its director of men’s basketball administration. Malone also spent three seasons (1995-96 – 1997-98) at under New York Basketball Hall of Fame coach Pete Gillen after beginning his coaching career working for at Oakland University in Michigan.

Malone is a three-time participant in the NBA’s “Basketball Without Borders” program, having coached at the league’s global outreach camps in Africa (2017), (2006) and Argentina (2005). In 2017 Malone traveled to Johannesburg, where he spent a week coaching at the BWB camps and then served as an assistant coach for Team Africa, for the NBA Africa Game 2017.

Malone also served as an assistant coach for the Canadian Men’s Senior National Team for three years. He helped guide the Canadian team to a top-four finish in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship in Puerto Rico, qualifying Canada for the 2010 World Championships.

A native of Queens, New York, Malone played at Loyola College in , where he graduated with a BA degree in 1994. He is a graduate of ’s Seton Hall Prep where he played two years under Bob Farrell. Malone also played a season under Tom Blackburn at (Mass.).

Michael is the son of longtime NBA coach , who has coached over 28 years in the league.

He and his wife, Jocelyn, have two daughters, Caitlin and Bridget.
