INTRODUCTION i DAVID WILLIAMSON’s first full-length play, The Coming of Stork, premiered at the La Mama Theatre, Carlton, in 1970 and later became the film Stork, directed by Tim Burstall. The Removalists and Don’s Party followed in 1971, then Jugglers Three (1972), What If You Died Tomorrow? (1973), The Department (1975), A Handful of Friends (1976), The Club (1977) and Travelling North (1979). In 1972 The Removalists won the Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Award for best stage play and the best script in any medium and the British production saw Williamson nominated most promising playwright by the London Evening Standard. The 1980s saw his success continue with Celluloid Heroes (1980), The Perfectionist (1982), Sons of Cain (1985), Emerald City (1987) and Top Silk (1989); whilst the 1990s produced Siren (1990), Money and Friends (1991), Brilliant Lies (1993), Sanctuary (1994), Dead White Males (1995), Heretic (1996), Third World Blues (an adaptation of Jugglers Three) and After the Ball (both in 1997), and Corporate Vibes and Face to Face (both in 1999). The Great Man (2000), Up for Grabs, A Conversation, Charitable Intent (all in 2001), Soulmates (2002) and Birthrights (2003) have since followed. Williamson is widely recognised as Australia’s most successful playwright and over the last thirty years his plays have been performed throughout Australia and produced in Britain, United States, Canada and many European countries. A number of his stage works have been adapted for the screen, including The Removalists, Don’s Party, The Club, Travelling North, Emerald City, Sanctuary and Brilliant Lies. David Williamson has won the Australian Film Institute film script award for Petersen (1974), Don’s Party (1976), Gallipoli (1981) and Travelling North (1987) and has won eleven Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Awards. -

GST) Overseas AUD $110.00 This edited volume represents the first book- length study of the history of research on Australian Aboriginal languages, and collects together 18 original papers on a wide variety of topics, spanning the period from first settlement to the present day. The introduction sets the scene for the book by presenting an overview of the history of histories of research on the languages of Australia, and identifying some of the major issues in Aboriginal linguistic historiography as well as directions for future investigations. Part 1 presents three detailed investigations of the history of work on particular languages and regions. The eight papers of Part 2 study and re- evaluate the contributions of particular individuals, most of who are somewhat marginal or have been marginalised in Aboriginal linguistics. Part 3 consists of six studies specific linguistic topics: sign language research, language revival, pidgins and creoles, fieldwork, Fr. Schmidt’s work on personal pronouns, and the discovery that Australia was a multilingual continent. Overall, the volume presents two major challenges to Australianist orthodoxy. First, the papers challenge the typically anachronistic approaches to the history of Aboriginal linguistics, and reveal the need to examine previous research in the context of their times — and the advantages of doing so to contemporary understanding and language documentation. -

Castroverde 2013 Abstract This dissertation is a preliminary attempt to define and theorize Spanish literature of the late nineteenth century from the perspective of the colonized. I take as my starting point the novels of the Filipino writer José Rizal: Noli me tángere and El filibusterismo. Although these novels are considered to be the foundational texts of the Philippine nation, I will instead focus on their relationship to Spain and the literature produced there around the same period. This analysis will be contrasted with a reading of Benito Pérez Galdós’s novel Doña Perfecta, which, as many critics have claimed, bears a resemblance to Rizal’s first novel. I will show how Galdós’s novel demonstrates a colonizing mentality despite being nominally about an internal Spanish conflict. -

Vol. LXVIll No. 28 ^Colorado|^arges^Weol^ 35 Cents St. Jude Catholic Community A parish far from hopeless By Colleen Smith Mason St. Jude is the patron saint of desperate situations; his namesake parish in Lakewood is anything but. St. Jude Catholic Community will celebrate its 25th anniversary and dedicate its recently renovated church Sunday, July 19, with the Liturgy of the Word at 2 p.m. The parish holds up much to celebrate. Under the warm and good humored pastoral embrace of Father Robert J. Kinkel, pastor for the past 11 years, St. Jude Catholic Community has blossomed into one of metro Denver’s most prominent parishes. St. Jude was founded at 9405 West Florida Avenue by the late Archbishop James V. Casey Aug. 22,1967. In subsequent years, the community grew to include the current approximately 2,300 families, a sizable pastoral team and a host of in-parish ministries. St. Jude’s most recent milestone, the church renova tion, began when the parish purchased a new pipe organ. “It’s funny to think this all began when we bought the organ, and said, 'W ell, where do we put it?’’’ Father Kinkel said. With that question in mind, the parish underwent a discernment process during Lent of 1990. “We were asking 'W here do we go from here? And what do we want to feel and look like as we enter the Church’s third millennium?’’’ said St. Jude liturgist Helen Marie Hurt. The resounding answers revolved around two parish priorities: Liturgy and music. “Good litiirgy builds faith, and bad liturgy destroys faith,’’ said Father Kinkel, who also serves as chairman of the archdiocesan Liturgical Calendar Committee. -
