'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors. -

Its demolition served as a rallying cry for early preservationists and students of historic preservation study its importance. Construction of the Massachusetts Constitution ROBERT J. TAYLOR J. HI s YEAR marks tbe 200tb anniversary of tbe Massacbu- setts Constitution, the oldest written organic law still in oper- ation anywhere in the world; and, despite its 113 amendments, its basic structure is largely intact. The constitution of the Commonwealth is, of course, more tban just long-lived. It in- fluenced the efforts at constitution-making of otber states, usu- ally on their second try, and it contributed to tbe shaping of tbe United States Constitution. Tbe Massachusetts experience was important in two major respects. It was decided tbat an organic law should have tbe approval of two-tbirds of tbe state's free male inbabitants twenty-one years old and older; and tbat it sbould be drafted by a convention specially called and chosen for tbat sole purpose. To use the words of a scholar as far back as 1914, Massachusetts gave us 'the fully developed convention.'^ Some of tbe provisions of the resulting constitu- tion were original, but tbe framers borrowed heavily as well. Altbough a number of historians have written at length about this constitution, notably Prof. Samuel Eliot Morison in sev- eral essays, none bas discussed its construction in detail.^ This paper in a slightly different form was read at the annual meeting of the American Antiquarian Society on October IS, 1980. (Dublin: Irish University Press, 1975) VIII: 1774, 154.] Momentous historical events often issue from a nexus of violence and communication. While American independence from Britain ultimately depended upon the spilling of blood on the battlefields of Bunker Hill, Saratoga and Yorktown, the successful challenge to the legitimacy of British rule in America was the culmination of an earlier communications war waged by American Whigs between the Stamp Act agitation of 1764-5 and the Coercive Acts of 1774. In response to the first of the Coercive acts--the Boston Port Bill--Boston Whigs secured a tidal wave of political and material support from throughout the colonies of British America. By the end of 1774, the American Secretary at Whitehall, Lord Dartmouth, was receiving reports from colonial Governors of North America, like the passage quoted above from the Lieutenant-Governor of South Caroline, William Bull. -

Bowdoin^s friendship with Franklin, Washington, Revere and others fut him in the midst of the struggle for Independence; at the same time his social position and family ties gave him entree to British leaders and officials. In lyyo, his own brother-in-law was Colonial Secretary for the Gover- nor, yet Bowdoin wrote the tract on the Boston Massacre, which clearly blamed the British for the incident and sent Boston down the road toward Revolution. This exhibition seeks not only to reveal Bowdoin^s importance in the Revolution, but also his contributions in the field of finance, science, literature and the arts. He was as well educated as any American in the eighteenth century and subscribed to the principles of The Enlightenment, which encouraged iyivestigation into the nat- ural world and practice of the graces of life. To accomplish these goals, the Museum commissioned the frst major biography of Bowdoin in the form of a catalogue which will be published on July 4, igy6. We are most grateful to Professor Gordon E. Kershaw, author of The Kennebeck Proprietors, 1749- 1775, and specialist on James Bowdoin, for writing the catalogue. The Museum has also attempted to tell the Bowdoin story purely with objects of art. Like books, objects contain data and ideas. Their stories can be ^Wead^^ if only one examines the object and asks certain questions such as: what kind of society is needed to produce such a work? What traditional or European motifs are used, which motifs are rejected and what new ones are introduced? What was the use or function of the object? Beyond this, the exhibition is intended to show that James Bowdoin expressed an interest in art not only in commissions for painting and silver but also in the execution of a bank note or scientific instrument. -

In 1833, Massachusetts was the last state in the nation to “disestablish” taxation and state support for churches.1 What, if any, impact did John Adams have on this process of liberalization? What were Adams’ views on religious freedom and how did they change over time? In this intriguing article Dr. Arthur Scherr traces the evolution, or lack thereof, in Adams’ views on religious freedom from the writing of the original 1780 Massachusetts Constitution to its revision in 1820. He carefully examines contradictory primary and secondary sources and seeks to set the record straight, arguing that there are many unsupported myths and misconceptions about Adams’ role at the 1820 convention. -

FIFE A MONG the earliest novelists in American literature is Sarah Sayward Barrell Keating Wood, known in her later years as Madam Wood. Born in York, Maine, on October 1, 17$9, at the home of her grandfather, Judge Jonathan Sayward, she married his clerk, Richard Keating, in 1778 and bore three children before his death in 1783. Then she began to write, publishing four novels in quick succession (Julia, or the Il luminated Baron, 1800; Dorval, or the Speculator, 1801; Amelia, or the Influence of Virtue, 1802; Ferdinand and El mira: A Russian Story, 1804), and later two long stories laid in Maine (Tales of the Night, 1827). She married General Abiel Woo,d in 1804 and lived in Wiscasset until his death in 1811. The rest of her life she spent in Portland, in New York, and in Kennebunk with various descendants. She died at the age of 95, still "a delightful companion to her great-great grandchildren, or to her nephews," according to her great grandson, Dr. -

Remembering the Loyalists of Annapolis and Digby Counties, Nova Scotia By Brian McConnell, UE * Over 230 years ago approximately 20,000 United Empire Loyalists came to Nova Scotia as refugees after the American Revolution. How can they be remembered ? Their presence is noticeable in Annapolis and Digby Counties in the names of communities, in the Loyalist era churches and cemeteries with their gravestones, in buildings and monuments, interpretative signs and plaques, and in street signs. Bayard Family Cemetery, Wilmot, Annapolis County Annapolis County Bayard Family Cemetery - on Hwy 201, Wilmot. Location of gravestones of Major Samuel Vetch Bayard (1757 - 1832), his wife Sarah (1772 - 1859), and daughters Ethelinda, Aleda, and Louisa. Bayard Road - located off Hwy 201, Wilmot, named after Samuel Vetch Bayard, who served as Major with Kings Orange Rangers. At conclusion of the war he settled at Wilmot where he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Nova Scotia Regiment. Christ Church Anglican Church - at 3065 Granville Road, Karsdale, begun in 1790 and consecrated in 1793 by Loyalist Bishop Charles Inglis includes grave of Jonathan Anderson (1745 - 1809) who was raised in Harrison, New York where his father, William, was a farmer. During American Revolution he enlisted in the New York Volunteers and in June 1784, brought his wife, Mary, and six children to Granville, Nova Scotia as Loyalist settlers. Their home in Karsdale still stands. - 2 - De Lancey Family Graveyard - follow trail off Highway 201 at Round Hill. It has been maintained by Historical Association of Annapolis Royal since 1925. It includes gravestones of Col. James De Lancey (1746 - 1804), his wife Martha (1760 - 1837) and son William De Lancey.
