Végéphobie, une nouvelle vague « Ceci n’est pas de la végéphobie »… Mais qu’est-ce donc ? Yves Bonnardel & Mata’i Souchon Le week-end des 6-7-8 octobre 2017 avait lieu la Veggie Pride, marche de la fierté des végétariennes1 de ne pas participer au massacre malgré la pression sociale (végéphobie)2. « La fierté exprimée par la Veggie Pride ne concerne pas une identité mais un geste et sa signification politique, qui fondamentalement est celle d’une désobéissance3. » L’événement avait débuté le vendredi 6 avec une rapide présentation de la part de Yves Bonnardel de l’historique de la Veggie Pride, expliquant qu’il y a vingt ans, on se faisait cracher en permanence à la gueule quand on disait qu’on était végétariennes pour les animaux (à l’époque, l’unique restaurant végé de Paris se faisait couramment cracher sur ses vitrines, ajoutait-il). Il rappelait que nombre de personnes reculaient devant le fait de devenir végés à cause de cette hostilité sociale, qu’une bonne partie cessait de l’être assez rapidement et que la plupart d’entre nous (végétariennes) n’osions pas dire que nous étions végés pour les animaux. Aujourd’hui, malgré des récents progrès en matière d’acceptabilité sociale du végétarisme éthique, beaucoup disent encore qu’elles le sont pour des raisons de santé, ou spirituelles, ou écologiques, alors qu’on a de sérieuses raisons de penser qu’elles le sont pas mal par souci des premiers concernés, les animaux maltraités et tués4. 1 Dans ce texte, si le genre est indéfini, nous utilisons le féminin neutre. -

07/2018 Like a Deer Caught in the Car’s Headlights: Spatial Justice and Animals Jean Gardin | Jean Estebanez | Sophie Moreau Translation : Laurent Chauvet Animals are the subject of increasingly virulent mobilizations, controversies and contemporary crises, developed about breeding and killing conditions, well-being, animal experimentation and meat diet. Although considering human beings as benefiting from the selfish exploitation of animals seems to become self-evident, it feels as though it has not been properly thought through. It seems even more suspicious when considering that those who point out animal exploitation have little knowledge of real animals. For Laurent Joffrin (a famous French editorialist) the fact that animals were taken into account in parties’ platforms for the French presidential election in 2017, is an obvious sign that “little by little, civilization is progressing” (Libération, April 3 2017). This criticism leaves us (the authors) stunned and baffled, a bit like a deer caught in the car’s headlights, because this movement – that we will call ‘animalist’, fully aware that it is made up of diverse trends – is slowly dominating in the media and political discourses, even though it represents a very small minority (with a few thousand activists in France and a few millions worldwide?). Moreover, although this movement has only recently spread, much has already been written to support animals since antiquity and the Enlightenments, not forgetting the numerous non-Western ontologies respectful of animals. Nature is harmony and order, where everything has its place and must not be disturbed. It inspires a religious sentiment of respect, in the sense of adoration and fear (and submission to whatever we perceive as powerful and dangerous). If everything which exists is nature, then nothing can be contra-natural. If, in contrast, only part of what exists is nature, then "contra-natural" only has any sense if we also accept that this nature has a purpose. There is, however, nothing to support this view. Science at any rate, since Darwin, has remained silent on this point(2). Only faith, whether faith in the natural order or religious faith, continues to advocate the existence of such a purpose. Furthermore, that an entity, "Nature", should exist and have a purpose cannot in itself resolve the ethical problem: that Nature (or God) exists does not automatically mean we must surrender to its (or His) will. To show "respect" for what we perceive as powerful, and to submit to an order (even when disguised as a "desire for harmony") does not, in itself, bode well. And yet the idea of nature is omnipresent in normative messages. Reality is not so clear-cut. On the one hand humans cry out in indignation against what they consider to be contra-natural; on the other they praise the conquests that have enabled humanity to escape the difficulties of its primitive condition. -
