PRESS RELEASE June 2011 11/49 Natural Pursuits – The Screen Dramas of Simon Gray Television Season at BFI Southbank in August 2011 BFI Southbank celebrates the tragi-comic screen dramas of the late Simon Gray. A writer of immense wit and intellectual charm whose razor-sharp dialogue is unsurpassed. The month long season features some of Gray’s most celebrated work including screenings of Unnatural Pursuits (1992), After Pilkington (1987) and They Never Slept (1991) which feature performances by British acting elite including Alan Bates, Edward Fox and Miranda Richardson. Following the screening of They Never Slept, a panel of guests including producer Kenith Trodd, and directors Udayan Prasad and Christopher Morahan will discuss his great contribution to television drama and the theatre illustrated with clips of some of his early and rare television plays to be chaired by Broadcaster Matthew Sweet. After the screening of Butley on Sunday 14 Aug, Lindsay Posner, director of the 40th anniversary revival of the play currently running at the Duchess Theatre will also be welcomed to the BFI stage for a Q&A. Gray wrote prolifically from the mid-60s onwards for both the West End stage (Otherwise Engaged, Quartermaine’s Terms, The Late Middle Classes, Butley) and for television, where such important early successes such as Death of a Teddy Bear, Man in a Sidecar and The Caramel Crisis were carelessly wiped. His most fertile period writing specifically for TV occurred between 1975 and 1993 during a close collaboration with producer Kenith Trodd and four major directors, Michael Lindsay- Hogg, Christopher Morahan, Udayan Prasad and Pat O’Connor. -

James Bonas Director Hats off to James Bonas for the flair and energy of his staging, which radiated visual imagination Andrew Clark, Opera, April 2019 Having gained a first class honours degree from Oxford in psychology and philosophy and performed as a classical pianist, James trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, prior to developing a career as a director with interests varying from classical theatre and contemporary opera to innovation in the use of video design and animation. Recent work includes Chabrier’s L’étoile with Lisbon’s Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Into the Woods for RADA, a double bill of Gianni Schichhi / Les Mamelles de Tirésias for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, a staging of Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale for the BBC Proms at the Drill Hall in Lincoln, Hänsel & Gretel for Bergen National Opera, a production of Westside Story for Future Stages in collaboration with RNCM, The Tempest for RADA, Ravel’s L'Enfant et les Sortilèges and L’heure espagnol for L’opéra National de Lyon (featuring projections by animator Grégoire Pont) and Tales of Hoffmann for English Touring Opera. He directed a new narrative ballet - The Crucible - for Scottish Ballet, in collaboration with choreographer Helen Pickett and composer Peter Salem, which opened the 2019 Edinburgh International Festival. Current projects include a new opera titled The Silent City for Matera in Italy (the European Capital of Culture 2019) Carl Orff’s Der Mond with the Opéra de Lyon, Rossini’s Le Comte Ory with Lisbon’s Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, as well as several revivals of L’enfant et les sortilèges with the Royal Opera of Oman, Opéra de Limoges, San Francisco Symphony and Cincinnati Symphony. -
