Luciana Sbarbati Member of the European Parliament Rome, 17th April 2008 President Radovanić, I would first like to thank you for your invitation, and greet the authorities here today, and thank my friend Giampaoli, President of the Ancona Chamber of Commerce, for his many years of great work, together with yourself, towards this initiative. I found participation in the works of the VII edition held in Ancona to be extremely interesting, and was there able to enjoy the great enthusiasm of those present. Now a year down the line, relations have been further strengthened, activities are more structured, and the Forum looks to Europe and the other countries, not only on the Adriatic, with even greater interest. The patronage granted by the Union for the second time, is a strong sign of support and encouragement. The very fact that you are here in Croatia today, consolidating the friendships and collaboration of this country, that will soon be proud to call itself a member of the EU, is another important sign. The European year of intercultural dialogue that we are currently celebrating provides a further opportunity for integration, for an exchange of experiences and, through the opportunities offered up by the Forum, allows operators and organisations such as the Chambers of Commerce to dialogue and create partnerships, and to identify new areas of collaboration and growth. The regions facing onto the sea draw resources from it. The knowledge of how best gather and exploit these in constructive initiatives can give operators new fields of work and divulge a greater sense of wellbeing amongst the general population. When I was first presented with this initiative, I hoped that it would become what it is today - a specific point of reference for all institutional political and other realities facing onto the Adriatic, but above all that it would successfully bring traditionally different experiences together, acknowledging peace as a primary condition for development and democracy. Without peace and a respect for diversity and ideas, without an equal dignity for all regardless of race, gender and religion, we cannot promote social and economic development nor develop a complete form of ‘European citizenship’ towards which, unfortunately, we still have far to go. Since my arrival at the European parliament, I have fought in all places and with all means available to me to demonstrate that the Adriatic-Ionian area plays a strategic role in connecting the north and south of the world, between old Europe and the countries of the expanding Union (many of which are already now full members). A natural crossways, it represents the ideal basin for the transit of goods and the shortest connection towards east; a source of income and employment in the fishing sector, and for those wishing to promote tourism potential. If the Forum is able, through the collaborations encouraged and the consolidation of relations between communities, the Adriatic will become a guarantor of safety and legality. I would have very much liked to have participated in the Forum's works, heard experiences of each participant, and reasoned on methodologies, strategies and future objectives. Unfortunately, my parliamentary work prevented me from reaching you in time to do so. However, I would like to assure you of my conviction of the worth and importance of this initiative and the political role that can be produced by this synergy, and in doing so can promise that I will collaborate fully in all institutions, in monitoring and supporting your projects. The generous efforts made by the Forum over these years has, and remains, commendable. Its annual appointment is a moment of constructive dialogue and in-depth study. It has successfully built on personal relations and friendships, where previously there were only institutional dealings. My great desire, and I believe that of all those present, is for the Forum to continue along this route, and strengthen the current network of Chambers of Commerce, becoming the driving force behind an economic and cultural growth, promoting social wellbeing, and creating the conditions for a sustainable development. I would wish you, my friend Giampaoli, and the organisers, every possible success, and ask that this be extended to all those present. Best regards Hon. Luciana Sbarbati 3 ENGLISH Adriatic and Ionian Chambers Forum 8th Edition – 22 – 24 April 2008 – Makarska (Croatia) _______________________________________________________ PARLAMENTO EUROPEO On.
