Last month, we celebrated our 15th anniversary, and as we did so, we thought about all of the customers who have been part of our family3 over the years. Each and every customer that buys from us has a story—why she opened a shop, how he got started piercing, places they’ve joined, stayed with, and even left, for many different reasons. We have made it our mission to know not just those professional stories, but also the personal stories of the people behind the enterprise. We have celebrated the births of babies, the proposals that clinched the coveted special somebody, the degrees earned, and the moves to new and exotic places. We have also been there through the illnesses, the hurricanes, and the deployments. Through each of these events, it has been our honor to listen to, to encourage, and to commiserate with each and every one of you. And so this month’s article is a reminder of the importance of caring not just about the sale in progress but about the backstory with which each of your customers walks through your door. Here are 3 tips you can share with your staff to help them truly care for your customers.

1. Make Every Customer Feel At Home. We’ve all been to places where counter staff looked down 2. Make sure your staff shows them they made the right choice by thanking them—for their time, for their suggestions, for their stories, for their critiques, for their business. Expressing gratitude starts with words—but it’s really a whole mindset. Entitlement, ignorance, bad behavior, and disdain all get in the way of gratitude, so if you spot them, alert the employee right away, reminding him that each and every interaction builds, beautifies, and strengthens the fabric of your business—and encourage him to find a reason to be thankful for each encounter, even the most trying.

And last but not least, remember that caring starts with you. What15 did you think you were going to be when you grew up? “Something to do with the medical field or with art."

How many years have you been piercing? "All together now, a little over 14 years. After my original apprenticeship, I worked 4 years in Michigan and Ohio. Then decided to bow out of the piercing world. 5 or so years later I was asked if I ever would consider doing it again and I was in need of a big life change, so I said yes. Best decision of my life. That was just over 10 years ago"

What got you into the industry? “A “friend” at the time (1999) got an apprenticeship and needed able bodies to practice on. So I was more than eager, being 18 and broke. Shortly after he started piercing professionally he had asked if I wanted to learn. The rest is history. “

What are you proudest of? “A year after coming back to the piercing world I had two articles written and published about my work and I was in Bizzare magazine out of the UK. So I can say I’m an internationally published artist-- I want to sound way cooler than I am. Lol“

If you could have dinner with any 3 people dead or alive who would it be and why? "Anthony Bourdain, because the man was so prolific in his outlook on life and food. And his voice! One of the very few celebrity deaths that really bummed me out. Still does."

"Quentin Dupieux, a French writer who made the movie Rubber. It’s one of my all time favorites and I want to ask him all about the movie. What inspired him to write and make a movie about a tire named Robert who had mind powers and could blow things up. It’s a cinematic gem all should watch at least once."

"My dad’s father. My grandpa Long died when I was in second grade. I have one or two small memories. I’d like to talk with him now, show him who I’ve became and such."

If you could compare yourself with any animal, which would it be and why? "A cat for sure. I like attention when I want it and solitude as well. I also like to knock things over for no apparent reason."

What is your favorite part of working in the piercing industry? Any good stories? “Helping people become more comfortable in their own skin and helping people get over a bad time going on in their lives at that moment. I’ve helped a lot of people who are ex-cutters and people who self-harm get through rough times as well. Nipple piercings changed my life as a young fella who was always the short fat kid. They gave me the confidence I was lacking on top of the tattoos and such. I’ve given people the same kind of confidence over the years with nipple piercings. Especially with people that have inverted nipples who just saw themselves as deformed and such. I gave them their nipples back which gave them the confidence they were looking for.” PAGE 8 © COPYRIGHT METAL MAFIA 2019 Any trends you see dominating the piercing industry/ any big piercing trends in your city? “One big thing I see is how it’s all about the fancy jewelry and not the quality of said piercing it’s in. It’s all about the posts and likes, not about quality of the piercing being made. Just how fancy the gold or real opals are. And I hate that it’s all about the jewelry now and not about good placement and anatomy.”

A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here? "Probably hoping to score a tattoo on a walk in. Because everyone knows penguins hate piercings."

If you had two super powers what would they be? Why? "Flying because, duh, that’d be neat and you’d never have to deal with construction. Although winters and rain will suck."

"The power to fall asleep instantly and to stay asleep the exact amount of time I want to be asleep. Because getting old sucks and sleep has become very elusive these days.”

If you had all the time and money in the world what would you be doing right now? “Eating my way through Japan and Europe.”

What would you pick for a last meal? “Sushi or I’d ask if I could cook it and I’d make my steak or pork tacos.”

Have any side projects you are working on/What do you work towards in your free time? “I’m currently in a band called The Krelboynes. We recorded a full length and released it last year and toured last August. We now are waiting to release a 3 song EP and a Xmas single. Then in the winter we plan to record another full album. Plus a small tour this September.”

If you could turn back the time and talk to your 18-year old self, what would you tell him/her? "To think about tattoo placement way more than I did for the future. Covering things can be a pain in the ass."
