There was a big shout for handball in the home penalty area after 54 minutes but the referee waved play on. The keeper made an outstanding stop from a Fairhurst shot on 57 minutes. Charnock were lucky to survive a penalty appeal when the ever lively Joel Gnabouyou jinxed his way past several defenders before being bowled over in the area. On 71 minutes Woods replaced Regan.

Charnock maintained their pressure but Peter turned a Fairhurst shot over the bar, Jordan Darr attempted an overhead kick that went just wide and Matt Davison shot over the bar.

The referee indicated five minutes of added time and just as this was running out there was a free kick for Charnock out on the left. It was a last ditch effort, Woods delivered into the area and GRIFFITH scored the equaliser. There was just time for Walker to replace the goalscorer before the referee blew for time immediately upon the restart.

It all came down to a penalty shoot- out and unfortunately the Villagers dead ball efforts were poor. Only Carl Grimshaw with the first kick scored, Walker, Young and Bibby all saw their penalties saved by the impressive home keeper. Although Bacup had their second penalty saved they made no mistake with the other three and it was the end of the road in another knock out competition for the team in green.

Due to printing and editor deadlines I have to write this final column of the season with four league games outstanding so it is impossible to comment on THE LAST WORD Charnock’s final position in the table and, most importantly, where they will be playing their football next season.
