Thackeray's father passed away four years later, and young William was sent to boarding school in London. Many of his early experiences in India and later in boarding school found their way into several of his popular works, including Vanity Fair and The Newcomes. After his premature departure from Cambridge University and a half-hearted attempt at law school in 1834, Thackeray moved to Paris to concentrate on his art. While studying there, he met and married Isabella Getkin Creach Shawe (1818-1893). The couple had three daughters, Anne Isabella, Harriet Marrian, and Jane who died at age eighteen months. Soon after her daughter's death, Isabella Thackeray suffered a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. Thackeray was then left with the responsibility of raising two young daughters and supporting his wife who would remain in various sanitoriums for the rest of her life. -

Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) showed great precocity, at the age of eight planning a Compendium of Universal History. In his youth he also composed three cantos of The Battle of Chevoit, an epic poem in the manner of Scott's metrical romances; a lengthy poem on Olaus Magnus; and a piece in blank verse on Fingal. At Trinity College, Cambridge, he twice won the Chancellor's Medal for English Verse, and became a Fellow of Trinity. -

VANITY FAIR by William Makepeace Thackeray THE AUTHOR William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was born in Calcutta to Anglo-Indian parents. His father held the post of Collector (the same position held by Jos in Vanity Fair), but died when William was four years old. He was then sent to England to attend boarding schools, while his mother remained in India to marry her childhood sweetheart. Thackeray was not a good student, finding his lessons boring and escaping by reading popular fiction. Though he did succeed in gaining entrance to Cambridge, he spent most of his time drinking and gambling, then dropped out after two years. After leaving Cambridge, he spent time in Weimar on the Continent (the Pumpernickel of Vanity Fair), where he encountered for the first time the literature and religious skepticism of the Romantic Movement. Returning to England, he attempted briefly to immerse himself in the study of law, and then purchased a weekly newspaper, which soon failed. His substantial inheritance from his father was lost through the failure of the Indian bank with whom the funds were deposited, and he then found himself faced with the necessity of working for a living to support himself, and later his wife and their young children. He chose the life of a journalist, writing and drawing for a number of magazines and newspapers, including Punch. While freelancing for ten years, he produced a variety of fictional works, the best-known of which were Barry Lyndon (1844) and The Book of Snobs (1846-7), along with essays and travel books. -

William Makepeace Thackeray, (born July 18, 1811, Calcutta, India—died Dec. 24, 1863, London, Eng.), English novelist whose reputation rests chiefly on Vanity Fair(1847–48), a novel of the Napoleonic period in England, and The History of Henry Esmond, Esq. (1852), set in the early 18th century. Thackeray was the only son of Richmond Thackeray, an administrator in the East India Company. His father died in 1815, and in 1816 Thackeray was sent home to England. After attending several grammar schools Thackeray went in 1822 toCharterhouse, the London public (private) school, where he led a rather lonely and miserable existence. He was happier while studying at Trinity College, Cambridge (1828–30). In 1830 he left Cambridge without taking a degree, and during 1831–33 he studied law at the Middle Temple, London. He then considered painting as a profession; his artistic gifts are seen in his letters and many of his early writings, which are amusingly and energetically illustrated. He started his career as a hardworking and prolific professional journalist. The 19th century was the age of the magazine, which had been developed to meet the demand for family reading among the growing middle class. In the late 1830s Thackeray became a notable contributor of articles on varied topics to Fraser’s Magazine, The New Monthly Magazine, and, later, to Punch. His work was unsigned or written under such pen names as Mr. Michael Angelo Titmarsh, Fitz-Boodle, The Fat Contributor, or Ikey Solomons. Major Gahagan (1838–39), a fantasy of soldiering in India; Catherine (1839–40). The History of Samuel Titmarsh and the Great Hoggarty Diamond (1841), The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844; revised as The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, 1856), which is a historical novel and his first full- length work. -

Yet late in the lengthy work a notable exception occurs, and as he proclaims his efforts at offering “true” history (via the lips of his chronicling persona, Pendennis), Thackeray approaches a concise delineation of some potential outcomes for historical practice. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted you will find a target note listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in "sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. -

She lacked the skill to do it herself, she explained, and hiring someone else would be unwise because her characters, “mostly unattractive to look at,” should not be subjected to the idealization that “common-place illustrators” practiced. For her, the sole and supreme exception was William Makepeace Tackeray: How he can render with a few black lines and dots, shades of expression so fne, so real; traits of character so minute, so subtle, so difcult to seize and fx—I cannot tell; I can only wonder and admire. Tackeray may not be a painter, but he is a wizard of a draughtsman; touched with his pencil, paper lives.1 In 1848, when she made this assessment, she was still writing as Currer Bell and distancing herself from the literary eminence that Tackeray had sought for eleven grinding years. -

Mr T. at his best!By Kindle CustomerBeing part English and not always proud of it, I delighted in reading this nearly 900-page kindle book. It took me over 12 days of almost non-stop reading. I read slow! I got that flu so this book is how I recovered. Not that I am up on Old English history, poetry, folklore and what- have-you but it was worth reading especially with all the first-hand accounts of the succession from the mother country including names of their Generals, battles and many American heroes were included. SO very fascinating! I loved every minute especially the clean non-graphic accounts of marital bliss and other odd relationships that were woven in as back stories. Mr. T. is one of the finest Novelists of the 18th/19th Century. No one holds a candle to his word-play, puns and visual word-pictures. We are right there in the moment. We are living in the mansions, eating with the guests, playing cards with the table-gamers and losing our money, cassocks, shirts and the even a plantation or two. -
