But if the lawsuit highlights the absurdity of that law and bolsters the argument of the Biden administration and others who say it should be repealed, it would go a long way toward bringing sanity to federal gun statutes. Mexico is awash in gun violence driven largely by drug cartels wielding American-made weapons. Some 70% of guns confiscated in Mexico have been traced to U.S. origins. The guns are mostly smuggled over the border, which might seem on its face to relieve the gun manufacturers of culpability. While solar and wind are the dom- inant segments in the transition to renewables, a number of emerging markets are looking to geothermal sources as a way to meet future en- ergy needs, Oxford Business Group (OBG) has said in a report released on Tuesday. Geothermal energy – which is generated when pipes drilled into the earth’s surface supply steam to power electricity turbines – lags behind other forms of renewables in terms of installed capacity; how- ever, it is an effective solution for many countries. One of the countries leveraging its significant geothermal poten- tial is Kenya. Located on the Great Rift Valley – where tectonic plates meet and bring magma closer to the earth’s surface – Kenya derives al- most half of its electricity from geo- thermal sources, according to Fitch Solutions, with its contribution set to expand to nearly three-fifths by 2030. As part of plans to boost geo- thermal capacity, in July the state- owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company, also known as KenGen, announced its intention to invest $2 billion over the next five years on new plants and modernisation. These efforts are expected to dou- ble installed geothermal capacity to around 1600 MW. The company aims to bring the 83.8-MW Olkaria I Unit 6 plant, which is currently under construc- tion, on-line later this year, while the Geothermal Development Com- pany, another state-owned body, Despite encouraging recent developments, geothermal energy has yet to realise its full global potential. has plans to complete the construc- tion of three geothermal plants in kets play key roles on the interna- lowances or exemptions – have also (720 TWh). elements such as sunshine, wind of drilling, and there has been an Menengai with a combined capacity tional scene, with Indonesia and been introduced.
