It is approximately 187km/117miles long if the route is strictly followed, but in some Lynmouth places there are good or bad weather alternatives and it is unlikely that you will be 14 able to resist diversions to visit places of interest nearby. So be prepared for a South West Coast Path South West Coast Path & Tarka Trail somewhat longer walk. It includes small single-track roads which have passing places and a picturesque toll road. The information starts at Porlock, but you can pick up the route anywhere along it, depending on where you are staying. Places of interest are listed and numbered in the order you reach them going anti-clockwise around the route, which is the recommended direction to follow. Remember to take your binoculars with you, as you have a good chance of seeing red deer herds on this route, as well as Exmoor ponies. Distance: about 36 miles Duration, including stops: all day. Please note: This route is not suitable for larger vehicles. Main towns and villages visited Porlock, Porlock Weir, Oare, Brendon, Rockford, Simonsbath, Exford, Stoke Pero, Cloutsham, Horner. Playcroft was originally three thatched properties dating back at least two centuries and the history of ownership goes back well over a hundred years. During the twentieth century the houses were converted into one unit and the roof rebuilt to a more modern standard. Playcross has a very attractive rear elevation which looks out over the main garden which is a delightful and fairly level lawn interspersed with a number of colourful trees and shrubs. The present owners, who have lived in Playcroft for many years, take a delight in their garden and it is a profusion of colour in the spring and early summer. In addition to the back is a further large garden to the side of the property which also has an area of lawn, flowers, a large variety of plants and is enclosed by mature beech hedgerows and fencing. In this part of the garden is the detached, single garage, large woodshed (which is large enough to take a table tennis table), greenhouse and small outhouse immediately behind the house with its own fireplace. This outhouse is block built, and also has a quarry tiled floor, storage heater, power and light and a lean to coal/woodstore adjoining it. There are some lovely views from the garden and particularly from the first floor windows to the property.

Hope you have made a resolution to walk regularly – with the group or on your own, and do encourage former colleagues who might be interested to join us. Sadly, as I mentioned last time, Barbara and John are resting from leading but fortunately Alan Leadbetter, Pete Cann and Christine Ahlheid with Jarka Sik have volunteered to contribute walks to the programme. The group will have its fifth anniversary at the end of February and by that time we will have had 89 walks with over 1400 participants. Our first walk was around the Exeter Green Circle and we will do it again in the Charity Event on May 5 th in aid of Exeter Hospice. This is a UERSA event, not just the walking group, so please encourage as many members and potential members as possible to join us.
