Palavras-chave: O Vice-Rei de Uidá, O Último Negreiro, Cobra Verde, Francisco Félix de Souza, Atlântico Negro Abstract: The article focuses on two novels – The Viceroy of Ouidah, by Bruce Chatwin, (1987; 1998) and O Último Negreiro, by Miguel Real (2007) – and the film Cobra Verde, by Werner Herzog (1987), taking the historical character Francisco Félix de Souza as a guiding thread to think the relations between fiction and history in the construction of an imaginary about a chapter of the history of the Black Atlantic. Supported in the discourses of the historical field, we analyze a network of interdisciplinary and intertextual cooperative relations, with emphasis in the Social Sciences.

Catalogue of the African Studies Library Film Collection in UCT Libraries Special Collections Any queries regarding the ASL film collection please contact Bev Angus ([email protected]) Updated:June 2015 Introduction In film, as with all other African Studies material in Special Collections, we collect comprehensively on South and Southern Africa and we are also committed to strengthening and broadening our film coverage of the rest of Africa to meet existing needs and to create new opportunities for research. Film is a powerful and accessible medium for conveying the stories and images of Africa, past and present. The African continent has a long and proud tradition of film-making, and has produced many film-makers of international renown. Our collection contains documentaries, television series and feature films made by both African and international film-makers. Besides supporting the teaching and research programmes of the University of Cape Town, the African Studies Library makes provision for the preservation of the films in the collection. Please note: The films in the ASL are primarily for viewing by members of the University of Cape Town community. • Brooks on Books African, January to June, 2019 Africa United: Soccer
Brooks on Books African, January to June, 2019 Africa United: Soccer, Passion, Politics, and the First World Cup in Africa/2010 by Steve Bloomfield This charming book more than lives up to its subtitle, and if I were teaching a course on African politics, I’d be very tempted to use it. Ten chapters, 14 soccer clubs: all respectfully documented. Map included, passion apportioned. Just a few of the teams: The Desert Hawks, The Harambee Stars, the Super Eagles, and Les Elephants. OK—where was the 2010 World Cup held and which African teams qualified? Ancestral Passions: The Leakey Family and the Quest for Humankind’s Beginning/1995 by Virginia Morrell This volume is voluminous in detail and a testament to the author’s abilities to command and structure detail. It lives up to its full title. The emphasis is split between the history of the Leakeys in Kenya and the fossils they and others found. But what a title! And what stories: tiny bones and big explanations. The back story is the extent of the Leakey commitment to Kenya. The first generation Leakeys arrived in 1892; the 5th generation was born in 2004. Mary Leakey died in 1996. Richard and Maeve’s daughter, Louise, has been in the family business since her own youth in the 80s to her current work in the Turkana Basin in northern Kenya. The Barefoot Woman/2008 in French, 2018 in English by Scholastique Mukasonga The book is meant to be a tribute to the author’s mother, but reads more like a description of Tutsi farmers in Rwanda in 1964, not a good time for Tutsis in Rwanda.

De fidalgo à agudá: A saga da família De Medeiros do Benim1 From fidalgo to agudá: The saga of the family de Medeiros from Benim Milton Guran * Resumo: Este texto trata da identidade social dos descendentes de traficantes bra- sileiros estabelecidos na costa ocidental da África e de africanos escravi- zados no Brasil para lá retornados, conhecidos no Benim, Togo e Nigéria como agudás ou “brasileiros”, tomando como exemplo a trajetória da família De Medeiros, fundada em meados do século XIX por Francisco José de Medeiros, filho do governador português da Ilha da Madeira. Palavras-chave: Agudá. Escravidão. Benim. Abstract: The text deals with the social identity of the descendants from the Brazilian slave dealers established at the Occidental Africa Cost and the Africans slaved in Brazil that had returned to Africa, known in Benin, Togo and Nigeria as the agudás or the “Brazilians” . The trajectory of De Medeiros family, founded in the middle of the XIX century by Francisco José de Medeiros, son of the Portuguese governor from Madeira Island, is taken as an exemplary case study.
