The success of the home team can be measured in part by the enthusiastic support of the fans. Roy McKay: Manager 1981 was not a year Major’s Manager Roy McKay would like to brag about. It was a year of ups and downs to say the least. Frustrating for both players and fans, even tougher for the person signing his name to the bottom of the line-up card. You probably won't get any predictions out of Roy on the 1982 Majors, but this year’s team looks strangely familiar to those of the early 70's: Excellent pitching, rich in experience, and plenty of hitting power.

BILL SHUTER Announcer Shoots, is one of those unselfish individuals that gets behind a team and wants to give of himself fully to see that everyone in the organization is successful and enjoys themselves. Along with his announcing duties last summer, Bill had to pinch hit as statistician in the one year absence of Don Plumb. Once again, this summer fans at Labatt Park will be kept informed during the progress of many Majors victories by the colorful man, affectionately known as “Shoots”.

DON PLUMB Statistician The most experienced statistician in the league, London is very fortunate and appreciative of his vast knowledge and talents. Due to health reasons, Don regretfully had to miss most of last summer’s action. Don has organized a senior basketball tournament with teams coming to London from all over Ontario. This tourney he’s run for more than a decade. As anything ole FlatTopdecidestodo, it’s run to perfection. Plumber, it’s good to have ya back!

WHARNCLIFFE RD. S. AT SOUTHDALE 686-7500 JIM DALTON Pitcher T-R 6 Former star pitcher for the Windsor Chiefs, the Majors are glad to have Jim on their side this year. Pro experience in the Philly chain, Jim is a pitcher who doesn’t mess around on the mound. A hard thrower who goes right at the hitters. His experience should also be a great aid in teaching some of the younger staff members.

GLENN LITTLE Infielder B-R T-R Good speed and excellent bat control should make Glenn a valuable addition to the Majors in this his first year of senior eligability. Glenn, a product of the London and District Baseball Association is also highly touted as a gloveman.

MIKE VAN ESCH Infielder B-L T-R Mike was able to gain a little senior experience in 1981 with the Majors when he saw some spot duty in the Ontario Senior Mens Tourney. Mike has shown promise at both the plate and in the field.

ROB WATRAL Infield and Outfield B-L T-R “Watt” A definate plus for the Major's in '82 was the decision of Rob Watral to once again sign an l-C contract. Good speed, a strong throwing arm, and a solid left hand stick should all combine to make him a very valuable addition. Throughout spring training Rob, (a very unselfish ballplayer) has worked hard with any young ballplayer who wanted to listen to his advice. 7

JAY SUITS B-R T-R Jay was a fine addition to the Major’s lineup in '81. Appearing in all 34 games, this Springfield, III. native also has 5 years of college baseball to his credit. Possessor of a strong arm and good speed, his bat should once again bolster the Major's hitting attack.

BARRY BRUNENKANT B-R T-R “Brew'' A very solid performer in every respect, Barry’s arrival mid-way through the season in '81 sparked the Majors to a fine second half. A catcher by trade, Barry has the versatility to play both infield and outfield positions. In only 18 games Brew racked up 6 hrs., 16 RBI’s, and a remarkable .406 avg.

JON OWEN Pitcher T-R B-R Jon was the workhorse of the l-C in 1981 hurling 127 innings and posting a respectable 3.12 ERA (8th best in league). A seasoned competitor, (3 times an All-Star) who has been improving with age. When he’s not on the mound pitching, you’ll see him working with younger hurlers, or hitting ground balls, and even coaching on the base paths.

ANDY JOHNSTON Pitcher Andy was brought to the attention of the Majors last summer by a fan of the Western Counties League where Andy pitched. After seeing an article in The Free Press, where the Majors needed pitching, a phone call was made, Andy was scouted and the Majors are happy to have Andy in London in 1982. Don’t let his effortless pitching style fool you into thinking his fastball isn’t moving. With his Louis Tiant style and “Magoo” squint, he’ll have some inter-county hitters soft shoeing around the batters box this summer. "......

call for 9 PHIL SCHMIDT "Schmitto” A most welcome addition to the Major’s pitching staff this year, Phil is certain to add stability and consistency. Hampered by a knee injury over the past few years, Phil hopes to once again attain the form that made him so successful throughout the 1970’s.

TOM MATTINGLEY “Matt" Rounding out the left side of the Major’s infield along with Dave Byers, Tom should have no problem matching his solid 1981 performance (.320 avg., 8 HRs, 28 RBIs). A strong hitter combined with a steady glove and accurate throwing arm make Tom an important key to the Majors’ success.

WYATT STINSON “Sparky” 1981 was Wyatt’s finest year to date as an IC regular. Batting a solid .286, he also provided good defensive ability in the outfield. A real take-charge individual both on and off the field, Wyatt always strives to improve every aspect of his game.

LARRY HAGGITT Infield B-L T-R “Hagar” His credentials are impeccable. Larry has been one of the most imposing hitters in the IC since his first year 1975. His hot bat helped lead the way for the Major’s late season surge last year (ie. 11 RBI’S in one game against Hamilton). 10 1 IVI I Nil RTAINMENT Vito'S AND DANCING PIZZA CAVE AND TAVERN FRL AND SAT. 435 HAMILTON RD., LONDON, ONT. 7 TUESDAYS 12 ALEX "THE GREAT" STANLEY Alex came from Toronto’s west-end and cut his teeth on baseball at Christie Pits. He graduated from the junior rank and while still of junior age played short stop for G & W senior on the O.B.A. Championship team. He turned Pro and after a few years returned to star at second base in the Beaches League. The “Great” umpired Pro for a few years after a serious knee injury ended his playing days. For a number of years Alex umpired in local sandlot ball, and it bothered him to see good young ball players being forced to quit because Toronto had no senior team for these players to graduate to. The Great did something about it by acquiring a fran chise in the Halton County Senior League, which he promptly gave and allowed the Leaside Baseball Asso ciation the use of same. Alex could see that there were more players coming up than one senior team could absorb so he set out and acquired a franchise for Toronto in the Intercounty Senior and Junior Leagues. While Alex was engaged in procuring these franchises he also designed and sold the idea of an all Ontario Baseball Tournament to the Labatt Brewers of London, Ontario. Alex has had an uphill battle in order to do these things, and on the way he has experienced many dif ficulties. Alex says the biggest hurdles have been apathetic and pessimistic outlook by many so called baseball people. The Great says, if you see something that you think isn’t right don’t sit back and knock it. Join the group and lend your talents, if any, to improve it.

LUCKY NO. N2 139565 26 MIKE RODREGUES Pitching/3rd Base Coach No stranger to Labatt Park or to the Majors, Mike is a former pitcher in both the Junior and Senior circuits in London. Owner Arden Eddie and Manager Roy McKay will be greatly assisted with the addition of Mike's baseball knowledge to their coaching ranks.

WAYNE FENLON B-L T-R Wayne’s credentials are hard to match. Last season Wayne led the Majors in game winning hits with 3, and on a personal accomplishment, became the all-time Inter-County leader in RBI’s. Over the seventeen years he’s been in a Major's uniform his team mates have looked to him as a leader. You can now see him passing on the vast wealth of knowledge he has acquired over an all- star studded career.

DAVE BYERS B-L T-R In this writer’s, and many others' opinions, Dave is the best all-round hitter in the league today. Dave participated in a league leading 16 double plays in 1981 along with batting feats of .379 average, on 55 hits, (7 DB, 8 HRS, 32 RBI’s, 26 Runs). Dave’s knowledge stems from his three &a half years as a Pro in the St. Louis Cardinal’s organization.

ARDEN EDDIE B-L T-R Roving the confines of Labatt Park 1982 marks Ardie's 15th year as a London Major (2 yrs. in Wallaceburg before moving to London), as a career leader in bases on balls, and closing in on others. Coming off a strong ’81 campaign (.336 avg., 30 RBI’s, 30 Runs, 5 HRS and a team leading 6 S.B.). There are few signs indicating that this veteran is slowing down. RON HART Off to a slow start in 1981, Ron finished with a 27 flurrish pitching some fine ball in the Ontario Baseball Tournament (hosted by London). Ron should see work this year as both a starterand as a reliever. He is a quick worker on the mound who throws strikes.

DAVE GODWIN Another young local player, Dave was quite impressive in his first year with the Majors. Mixing his pitches well, combined with good control, made Dave a valuable reliever and spot starter, (one of his best performances was a 2 hitter against Guelph). Never short of words, Dave provides a constant banter of encouragement for his team mates.

DOUG O’BOYLE Pitcher T-R Amer. This young fellow has a fine college career to date and is expected to go high in the 1983 pro draft when he first becomes available. He comes with high recommendations from Montreal Expo's scout, Harry Moore. His last years stats include an ERA. of less than one run per game, 55 strike outs in 50 innings. Doug also has seen action at second base, and has excellent base stealing ability, shown with his 35 S.B. in 28 games.

ALEX McKAY Infield B-R T-R Alex has seen action in a Major’s uniform for almost 7 years. A former manager and player for the LDBA’s Junior team, he is a firm believer in the development of local talent. Very eagerto upgrade a disappointing 1981 batting average, Al finished the season 3rd ingame-winning hits for the Majors and 5th in runs scored.

The London Majors are a team that have had some excellent pitchers over their 60 plus years in existence, and “Folks”, you are likely going to be watching one of the finest in Guzz in 1982.

JAY LAPP of B-R T-R Still only a junior, Jay’s presence around Labatt Park is more predictable than the Tide. Avery hard worker who has shown remarkable improvement in all facets of the game.

OWEN BROCK Outfield, I St. Owen is a promising junior graduate. If past performances are any indication, Owen sould play a major role in the success of the team in 1982.
