14 MILLER Kelli Miller completed her first season as head coach of the Ball State women’s volleyball program in 2016, leading the team to a second-place finish in the Mid- American Conference West Division.

After a tough start to the 2016 season against some high caliber opponents, the team persevered and won 13 of its final 22 matches to finish the season with a 13-18 overall record.

Ball State’s 9-7 league ledger was good enough to place second in the MAC West Division and earned the squad the fifth seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinals were a few points shy of a top three seed, however, dropping tough five- set matches to No. 1 Northern Illinois and No. 3 Ohio down the stretch.

The 2016 Cardinals were led offensively by sophomore Brooklyn Goodsel who earned First Team All-MAC accolades after ranking seventh in league-only competition with a 3.19 kills-per-set average. Miller’s first year also saw libero Kate Avila and middle Sydnee VanBeek earn MAC All-Freshman Team honors.

In the classroom, the Cardinals were honored with the prestigious American COACHES & STAFF Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for finishing the KELLI MILLER | ASSISTANT COACHES | STAFF academic year with a 3.48 team grade- point average. HAMMONS Megan Hammons (1998-2001) earned a spot on the Grand Rapids Force of the now defunct United States Professional Volleyball League. Hammons also played for AMVJ Amstelveen, a Ball State faced Louisville in the 2011 NCAA Tournament First Round, hosted by Purdue. professional team in Holland.

31 BALL STATE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE EXPOSURE CARDINALS Starting with the 2016 home opener versus IUPUI on Aug. 31, the Ball State women’s volleyball program will have 10 of its 13 home matches carried live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

Six matches will be produced by Ball State University Media Services and will feature Joel Godett covering the pla y-by-play action and women’s volleyball alumna (2007-10) and former student assistant coach (2011) Alyssa Rio serving as analyst.

The remaining four matches will be produced by Ball State Sports Link and Digital Sports Production, with talent a nnounced prior to each match. In 2013, Ball State University became the first school in the nation to offer a degree i n Digital Sports Production through the Department of Telecommunications. Digital Sports Production is an interactive learning experience combined with an immersive learning project, Ball State Sports Link.

Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the , a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918.

The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.
