  • The Creation and Development of Rent by Jonathan Larson
ABSTRACT Title of Document: “OVER THE MOON”: THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF RENT BY JONATHAN LARSON Elizabeth Titrington, Master of Arts, 2007 Directed By: Professor Richard King Chair, Department of Musicology Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success , the hit musical Rent by Jonathan Larson has received scant attention in academic literature. The story of Rent has been told and retold in the popular media, but a look at Larson’s own drafts, notes, and other personal wri tings adds another important and largely missing voice – Larson’s own. In this study, I use the Jonathan Larson Collection, donated to the Library of Congress in 2004 , to examine this seminal work and composer by tracing Rent ’s development and documenting L arson’s creative process. My analysis of material from the Larson Collection and the interviews of others involved in Rent ’s development reveal s the story of how this unconventional rock musical made it to the stage, highlighting the importance of visio n, but also of revision and collaboration. “OVER THE MOON”: THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF RENT BY JONATHAN LARSON By Elizabeth Corbin Titrington Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryl and, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts 2007 Advisory Committee: Professor Richard King , Chair Professor Jonathan Dueck Professor Robert Provine © Copyright by Elizabeth Titrington 2007 Preface Although I cannot claim the status of Rent head – I do not know every word to “La Vie Bohème” by heart or have a website dedicated to the show – I admit to approach ing this project as a fan as well as scho lar.

  • Two Legends – One Musical
TWO LEGENDS – ONE MUSICAL Two time Tony Award® winners Patti LuPone (Evita, Gypsy) and Christine Ebersole (42nd Street, Grey Gardens) star as Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, respectively, trendsetters in the beauty industry a century ago. Along with Tony nominees John Dossett (Gypsy, Newsies) and Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel), the stars reprise their roles following their sold-out engagement in Chicago. WAR PAINT tells the amazing story of these two cosmetics pioneers, both of whom were self-inventors who became the country’s first major female entrepreneurs. They were also brutal competitors, whose lengthy “tug-of-war would give birth to an industry that would forever change the face of America. From Fifth Avenue society to the halls of Congress, their intense rivalry was ruthless, relentless and legendary—pushing both women to build international empires in a world dominated by men.” Inspired by the book, War Paint, by Lindy Woodhead, and the documentary film, The Powder & the Glory, the musical is directed by Tony nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Grey Gardens) and choreographed by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli (The King and I, Newsies). It reunites Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, the composer and lyricist team of Grey Gardens, with Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright (Grey Gardens, I Am My Own Wife). Living in squalor in a rundown Hamptons mansion, their indomitable spirit soon catapulted them to a cult icon status of a sort that was an ironic counterpoint to Mrs. Onassis’s own such status. Three decades later, the Beales received the ultimate homage: being portrayed on the Broadway stage. Combining a backstage look at the creative process behind the show, lavish clips from the original film, and insightful interviews with Albert Maysles, a host of Beale authorities, devotees and cultural commentators, and the Broadway show’s creators and cast, GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton To Broadway reminds of us of the power of the Beales’ story to arouse a multitude of emotions even decades later.
