    A Gazetteer to the Metal Mines of Scotland INTRODUCTION This is the fourth edition of this work. I have checked most of my original references and located further mines and trials using the internet. I hope that I have been able to provide more accurate map references. However, most of the entries have only a six figure map references and so may be a little way off. I have given some of the Loch Fyne mines names of my own choosing as the original references used only letters and numbers on a map which I have not reproduced, I have enclosed the name in quotes (‘ ‘) where this has been done. As I have not visited all of the sites there may well be inaccuracies. Please feel free to use the ‘Aditnow’ web site to make any corrections. For the purpose of this Gazetteer, the definition of a mine or trial is an underground working. Where, during my search of the literature I have come across ore bodies worked by opencast or quarrying, I have included them and mentioned this in the NOTES. I have not included gold unless it appears in my original reference, but have included other minerals as I have come across them. Also I have not included all the individual mines for Leadhills and Wanlochhead. Spellings of place names etc may have changed through time, where this occurs I have used the spelling in the REFERENCE. Please note: Many of the mine sites listed are well over 100 years old and the evidence still visible on the ground may be inconclusive especially in the case of the small mines and trials, others, however, are very obvious.

Area wide engagement results using the Place Standard Tool Between May and October 2019, the Community Planning Partnership (CPP) used the Place Standard tool to engage residents in Argyll and Bute on how they feel about the place(s) that they live and work in Argyll and Bute. We are very grateful to all the responses that we received. We hope you find the information easy to understand and of interest to you and your community. We are pleased to see that the thematic areas of Natural Space, Feeling Safe, Identity and Sense of Belonging and Social Contact came out with the highest scores, needing the least improvement, when considering Argyll and Bute as a whole. The engagement has been undertaken at a place-based level and respondents provided their postcode, groupings of postcodes have created the settlement/community level detail. The results are available for community groups and partner agencies to use, for example, to assist with service planning or for community-led action plans. Notes of Previous Meeting: Approved by NJ and seconded by LMcV 3. Matters arising: None 4. Policing: 4.1 Sgt Balkeen reported that there have been 34 calls to the police in the area since 1/1/19 - one only being a crime report. 4.2 A house fire in Ardrishaig – police and firemen called to attend the scene, but no casualties were involved. 4.3 There is concern about the high number of Internet frauds. The callers are extremely convincing on the phone, managing to convince even those householders who are very aware and internet savvy. A team of Special Constables is being recruited to deal with this fraud. 5. A & B District Councillor: Sandy Taylor (ST) 5.1 Budget 2019-20: The recent Scottish Government funding has removed pressure on our budgets, which could have seen the “loss” of Council services and jobs, albeit there remains an enduring challenge for local government in the years to come in the face of reducing budgets. One question to be addressed by the Council on 21 February, is whether to increase Council Tax charges by up to 4.79%, as opposed to the planned 3%. The additional 1.79%, if applied, would realise an additional £858K for the Council coffers.

Pass through the villages of Furnace and Minard and follow the road towards Lochgilphead, Castleton House is on the left hand side some 7 miles before the town of Lochgilphead. Situation Castleton House occupies a stunning position near the north shore of Loch Fyne and is reached by a private road leading off the A83. Some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery is found in this area of Scotland. There is superb hill walking and climbing, with the ‘Rest and be Thankful’ pass leading up through the Arrochar Alps which include four Munros (mountains over 3000 feet). It is also a renowned area for field sports, particularly stalking and shooting. Lochgilphead sits in a sheltered glen at the head of Loch Gilp, an arm of Loch Fyne.
